No Left or Right

No Left or Right. Only Up or Down!
You will remember that the 40th President of this the United States was Ronald Reagan. The year I speak of in this CRA Moment
was the year of 1964 when President Reagan spoke the following words during a „stump speech‟ he made on behalf of another
candidate running for office. Reagan said, “I am going to talk of controversial things. I make no apology for this. You and I are
told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down.
It‟s up to man‟s age-old dream of individual freedom consistent with order or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. Regardless
of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would sacrifice freedom for security have embarked on this downward

Please don‟t miss Reagan‟s next words, for in them I ask you to consider them, not only from a political viewpoint, but much
more importantly, a spiritual application. In that same speech he asked this question: “Are you willing to spend time studying the
issues, making yourself aware, and then conveying that information to family and friends?”

Jeannie and I have been blessed to travel to many countries around this God-created globe, only to view, first-hand, so much ruin
and relics of what was once a thriving, vibrant society. For many of these places upon earth, little remains other than huge
mausoleums and memorials that point backwards in life. It surely must be apparent to most anyone living in these countries, or,
for that fact, even visiting for a brief time, that it is far beyond the inability of governments to solve problems by political
viewpoints alone. For certain, it is not riches alone that secure either a person, or a countries future for good. Yet, overall, little is
being done on a day-by-day basis to insure Kingdom values in the other person‟s life. In Luke 12:15 these words of Jesus are
recorded; “Take heed and beware…for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” Solomon said,
“Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death (spiritual death)” (Prov. 11:4). In Prov. 13:11
Solomon reminds us that, “Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished. But he who gathers by labor will increase,” and
that “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Prov. 14:12). All the while, there remains a
tendency of many to invest in earthly things while neglecting the more important things that deal with the coming of the kingdom
of God, and what has eternal value. We as individuals insure our home, cars, boats, land, and jewelry, yet fail to insure our own
lives as well as the lives of our loved ones for what will never end. One person said, “We so focus on the here and now that we
grow blind to the there and then.”

Jeannie and I have a friend who has stuff! Cars, cars, and more cars! Several garages full of cars and stuff! While looking at all
he has brings a gleam to my eye, my heart breaks at the same time, for I‟m reminded of the parable in Luke 12 of the rich man
who thought to himself of what he should do since he had no room to store all his crops. He decided (noticed that “he”
decided…nothing of checking in to see what the Lord would have him do) he would pull his barns down and build something
greater for all his stuff! One big problem was about to be at his doorstep that night! In verse 20 we find God saying, “Fool! (In
other words; „empty-headed‟ „senseless one‟) This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be
which you have provided.”

My friend, this life we‟ve been given and blessed with is not just a practice run to learn how to do things the first time around in
order to be better the second, third, or fourth time. You and I get one shot at it, and that one shot is very, very brief. We‟d better
get it right the first time! Let me ask, where do you invest your life? Do you invest only in attempting to secure the few things of
this life, or do you spend time investing in things the Bible refers to as incorruptible? One day there will be millions upon
millions of people who will look back remembering days, months, and years that were spent on this life‟s comforts compared to
the few things they spent time on that could have been everlasting. What a waste! It‟s “Not Right or Left. It‟s Up or Down!”
What a heartbreak for those who will have missed the larger picture of life, for according to Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:10, “We must
all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has
done, whether good or bad.” “For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required” (Lk. 12:48).
