Bandwidth Support

    WAN and LAN Network Links
 Is there sufficient bandwidth to support the video demand?
 Is there sufficient bandwidth to support current data usage?
 Remember that data traffic needs to be bursty, so it needs
peak bursts well above its average usage
 Converged links – Real-time traffic should not exceed 35% of
       link utilization
 Links dedicated to real-time traffic – utilization can go to 80%
       because traffic is well behaved

                                                                          28
Bandwidth Management Step 1

Design each network link to support a specified video
    conferencing bandwidth
 Converged links can not support more than 35% real-time
      traffic
 Dedicated links can support 90% real-time traffic
The network routers will limit video traffic bandwidth to
    these design values
 This is important to protect the other applications using these
      same links
 Overrunning these bandwidth limits will degrade the
performance of all calls concurrently using the link

Firewalls & Traversal

Why is crossing firewalls so hard for voice?
 HTTP (and most other data traffic) is initiated by the client
 The server only responds to client requests
 Most applications use a fixed TCP port value
 Firewalls are built to understand fixed ports, and client-initiated
traffic, and allow the responses to those requests through
Voice and Video can be initiated from either side
Voice and Video bring up separate streams from each
end that have to pass thru the firewall
Voice and Video (H.323 and SIP) use ephemeral ports
 Port numbers are determined at call set-up time
 Firewall has difficulty tracking which ports are selected, which
should be open and for how long
                                                                           31
