Curriculum Area - KS1 The World Around US Strand 3: ‘My Environment’

Programme Objectives

   1. To increase their knowledge of how we can care for our local birds.
   2. To become familiar with the name, appearance, diet, habitat and
      characteristics of a diverse range of birds.
   3. To work with a range of materials to make a bird feeder and a Bird nest.

Programme Outline

Welcome children and arrange into new mixed groups or pre-existing groups.
“Getting to know you” or re-acquainting session and establishing why they are at
Speedwell.

Local birds are discussed in terms of appearance, diet, habitat and special
characteristics. Visual aids such as a Powerpoint presentation and specimen birds are
used to stimulate child involvement.

Bird watching in the forest and formal garden. KS1 use binoculars to
identify/classify birds

Children partner another pupil from link school and find out several details about
them.




Making a bird feeder - Children mix seeds, nuts and lard and place it into a bird
feeder made from a range of plastic containers .

Making a Bird Nest – Children will use clay to make a birds nest and will decorate it
with a variety of natural materials.

Programme Learning Outcomes

   1. Children will increase their knowledge of how we can care for a selection of
      common local birds.
   2. Children will develop environmental investigative skills
   3. Children will use a range of materials to make a bird feeder and a Bird Nest.
