Macintosh, Linux & Windows Presenter: George Sakhokia The Two Different Systems Microsoft Windows – The most popular and widely used operating system. MacOS – Operating system that works only on the hardware produced by Apple, So called Macintosh computers. Apple has a monopoly in producing it’s goods. Both hardware and software is developed by Apple The Two Different Systems Microsoft is (and was) just developing only the operating system. That is, only software. Macintosh was a monopolist in producing hardware for its software. It is still Apple’s production “secret”, how to build CPU, hard drive and file systems for MacOS The Two Different Systems Microsoft’s demand for hardware and Apple’s monopoly in producing Macintosh system computers became the reason of more popularity of Windows. The hardware designed for Windows is compatible to run on other competitor operating system of Windows – Linux. Due to this compatibility Linux has more users nowadays than Macintosh The Two Different Systems The developers of Linux designed their new product for such hardware, that was easily available to produce because of the competition. In short Linux was adjusted to be compatible for Windows designed hardware and therefore compete Microsoft more effectively. Also one of the reasons of the Linux’s success is that still there are some free distributions of Linux. The other ones are much cheaper than Windows Comparison – I’d like to buy a Laptop 2 choices: 1. Buy brand – Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Siemens etc. mainly designed for Windows 2. Buy Apple laptop – For Mac operation system Comparison For example: I buy Dell laptop. I will have to make choice which operating system to purchase to make my computer work MS Windows – Expensive. After installing Windows I have to buy a lot of other expensive software, which I will necessarily need (MS Office for example) Linux – This operating system is either free or much cheaper and after installing it, I will hardly ever need to purchase any additional software, because Linux has almost all available software packages in it. Comparison If I choose Macintosh laptop – It will be also very expensive, but It will have all common and useful software in it. The Reality In reality it’s obvious that most of the consumers will choose Windows. The reasons can probable be User friendliness (On my opinion MacOS is the most user friendly, but just on my opinion) Popularity Compatibility for different types of hardware Availability and easiness to repair. Substitutability of hardware of different brands How to compete Microsoft? For Linux developers I would suggest to specialize more in user friendliness and stress the advantages in Viruses, Networks, Stable Servers, etc. Macintosh has been stable during the last 20 years. It had almost fixed part of the market regardless of the rapid growth in PC industry. Macintosh OS should have to be made compatible with Windows designed hardware. Apple could give up monopoly also, but it will actually harm the company.
