SENIOR THEATRE STAFF NURSE


  Reports to:                   Theatre Sister
  Accountable to:               Theatre Manager
  Grade:                        MT03/Grade F
  Hours:                        35 per week, (rota)
  Location:                     Main Theatres


  Main Theatres comprise a multi-disciplinary team who aim to provide a safe and
  supportive environment for patients undergoing anaesthetic and surgical procedures,
  whose objectives are:

      The patients are ready for anaesthesia to start promptly
      Patient flows to and from theatre run smoothly
      Operating lists are constructed in a way that makes the most of operating time
      Sessions start and finish close to the scheduled time
      Agreed statistics are collected and converted into information for assessment/action.


  Definition of qualification as a senior theatre staff nurse
      Registered General Nurse (RGN) Level 1
       with further qualification(s) in operating theatre technique
       and/or
      Operating Department Practitioner (ODP)
       With current skills in surgery, developing skills in a specialist area


  Seniority of the senior theatre staff nurse
  The senior staff nurse is directly responsible to the:

                Theatre Sister

  The senior staff nurse holds seniority for:
          Staff nurses assigned under his/her direct supervision
          Students in surgery, if assigned to study under his/her direct supervision.
          HCAs assigned under his/her direct supervision
          TAs assigned under his/her direct supervision

Universal responsibilities of the senior theatre staff nurse

      Maintain quality surgical patient care regardless of the patient's race, religion, age, sex,
       nationality, and disability, social or economic status.
      Respect patient confidentiality and rights
      Maintain patient safety at all the times
      Protect the patient from harm and be an advocate for the patient's welfare
      Practice in accordance with the professional practice standards established by the
       profession
      Carry out delegated tasks, recognising limitations of competence.
      Ensure competence and knowledge of equipment within your sphere of activity.
      Understand and recognise legal implications and competence levels regarding the dual
       role, requesting assistance whenever appropriate.

       role and that of the First Assistant to the Surgeon, acting according to Clinic policy.
      Maintain excellent aseptic techniques in all invasive procedures
      Participate in continuous quality improvement activities

      Support students in surgery
      Maintain an excellent service to all patients / customers / suppliers
      Promote teamwork and ensure good communication between multidisciplinary teams
       within theatres and other departments

       services to patients
      Ensure the operating room temperature complies with the operating room guidelines,
       prior to patient use.
Universal tasks of the senior staff nurse

      The senior theatre staff nurse practices alongside the Consultant Surgeon, and is a
       skilled, knowledgeable, qualified and competent practitioner in identified specialties,
       whose role is to provide and maintain a safe perioperative environment for patients,
       maintaining high standards of expertise.
      The senior theatre staff nurse practices in the general environment of Main Theatres, as
       he/she is trained and qualified to do so, by assignment of the Theatre Co-ordinator
       and/or Theatre Sister.
      To be responsible for the deliverance of highest standards of care, service and customer
       satisfaction to all Patients, Relatives, Consultants, Suppliers of the London Clinic in
       his/her role as a member of the surgical team.
      To foster professional teamwork within the operating theatres, HSDU technicians and
       with all other departments of the London Clinic

Specific tasks of the senior theatre staff nurse
      Adhere to appropriate safety precautions, as established within the theatre/clinic to
      minimize the risks of fire, explosion, electrical shock, contamination, accident and
      equipment malfunction.
     Provide lead knowledge, expertise and leadership for your identified specialty.
     Act as mentor/coach to team members and other appropriate members of staff.
    Undertake performance appraisal of your staff according to Clinic policy and in line with
     departmental objectives.
     Ensure effective liaison with the Theatre Sister.
     Assist with the maintenance of adequate stock levels as per par stock levels.
     Ensure maintenance of Surgeons Preference Sheets in your specialty.
     Ensure appropriate equipment for surgery is brought into theatre.
     Prepare, check and maintain surgical equipment as per guidelines before any procedure.
     Responsible for the collection of instruments, prosthetics/implants, consumables and any
      necessary equipment required for the procedure.
     Ensure the surgeon is informed of any shortfalls in the provision of instruments,
      prosthetics/implants, consumables and any necessary equipment required for the
      procedure, prior to the commencement of the procedure, so that remedial action can be
      taken if deemed necessary.
     Prepare sterile trolleys for invasive procedures.
     Ensure that only sterilized, items are used, ensuring that the integrity of the packaging is
      intact and that expiry dates on all products are checked. Products must only be used in
      accordance with the manufacturers or suppliers written instructions.
     Assemble and prepare appropriate and essential disposable / reusable items for surgical
      procedures using the aseptic technique if required, checking sterility and expiry date of
      packing.
     Ensure appropriate prosthetics/implants are available, with intact packaging and within
      the appropriate expiry date for each procedure you are to scrub for.
     Undertake a count of accountable items, as per policy.
     Undertake preliminary checking of drugs, fluids, and blood as per policy.
     Prepare drugs on direct order and / or supervision of a Consultant.
     Receive patients into the operating theatre. Check of medical records according to
      policy. Maintain accurate surgical patient records.
     Assist other team members to participate in the safe transferring and positioning of the
      patient.
     Monitoring of relevant equipment / data during surgical procedures.
     Ensure the labelling of specimens is correct and documented in the book provided as per
      policy.
     The senior theatre staff nurse must be able to anticipate the surgeon's requirements
      prior to and during the surgical procedure.
     Support the surgeon[s] to maintain sterility, asepsis and hygiene in any clinical/surgical
      procedures.
     Ensure competency and knowledge of equipment within your area.
     Ensure that internal / external service and calibration of surgical equipment is achieved,
      by using the Theatre Equipment Database.
     Ensure faulty equipment is isolated from use, using the appropriate label, and report to a
      responsible person
     Use universal precautions to minimize the risk of infection to the patient, the surgical
      team, and other staff in any clinical procedures and areas.
     Assist your anaesthetic colleagues with reversal of anaesthesia and extubation, if
      required.
     Assist at medical / hospital emergency scenes as trained and qualified.

    Assist and support all theatre departments, if it does not interfere with own surgical
     duties.
    Ensure regularly attendance of in-house trainings i.e. CPR, mandatory training, fire
     training.


Specific tasks of the senior theatre staff nurse in the role of the theatre team leader

 The senior theatre staff nurse or ODP allocated as Team Leader for an operating list
 session is accountable for and responsible for ensuring that the following is achieved
 during:

     1. Ensure that the team analyses and plans for the list

     2. Ensure that appropriate equipment is available and tested prior to use

     3. Allocate who is to scrub and circulate

     4. Allocate other duties e.g. for specific equipment or tasks such as catheterisation or
        assisting the surgeon to catheterise and pre-op shave

     5. Plan refreshment breaks

     6. Ensure supervision of the Theatre Assistant and HCA

     7. Liaise with the ODP or anaesthetic nurse with regard to sending for the patient

     8. Ensure that the Operating List Quality Report is accurately completed

     9. Report incidents

     10. Ensure specimen handling is undertaken safely and promptly

     11. Ensure that the Patient Care Record is completed accurately and fully

     12. Ensure that the Theatre Register is complete

     13. Ensure that preference sheets are updated

     Criminal Record Check
     This position is covered by the Exceptions Order of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
     This means that all applicants are required to disclose information about spent as well as

     The successful candidate will be required to undergo a Standard/ Enhanced Disclosure
     check by the Criminal Records Bureau and to sign a declaration regarding criminal record
     information and fitness to practice.

     accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Criminal Records Bureau.

Increments                      The incremental date is the anniversary of date of commencement
                                with the Clinic. An incremental increase will take place on the 1st of
                                the month following 12 months service, until the employee reaches
                                the top of the scale.

Annual Leave                    175 hours. The annual leave year currently runs from January -
                                December. Annual leave entitlements are calculated on complete
                                months of service and those employees starting after January will
                                have their leave calculated on a pro-rata basis for the rest of the
                                leave year.

Bank Holidays                   56 hours per year

Superannuation                  The Clinic operates a contributory pension fund which employees
                                are eligible to join on completion of the trial period.

Associated Life                 This applies from the date of commencement at 3 x annual salary.
