                                 Formaldehyde/Peroxide Rack


                                          ARA-20-2021


General description of installation

There are two instruments located in this rack. They are the UEA Formaldehyde and UEA
Peroxide instruments. The rack is expected to be located mid cabin on the starboard side. Seating
at the instrument is unknown. Air samples are taken from the air sample pipe and discharged to
the general exhaust.


Both instruments work by chemically transforming the analytes into fluorescent compounds and
measuring the fluorescence signals of these compounds under UV excitation.

The Formaldehyde instrument measures only formaldehyde, and the peroxide instrument
measures Hydrogen Peroxide and total organic peroxides.

The formaldehyde and peroxide instruments are required only for scientific use.
The safety of the aircraft and its occupants is not dependent on the correct function of any
equipment in the rack.

Function and Operation of Formaldehyde instrument
   The formaldehyde instrument continuously measures gaseous formaldehyde in the
   atmosphere at trace levels.
   Air is drawn off the aircraft Air Sample Pipe down a length of PFA tubing and once
   inside the instrument passes over very dilute acid solutions where the formaldehyde is
   stripped from the air and reacts to form a fluorescent compound. The concentration of
   the fluorescent compound is measured using a low pressure mercury lamp enclosed in
   a secure housing. Reagents and waste are held in a sealed aluminium box and
   transferred to/from the analyser in PFA tubes.
Function and Operation of Peroxide instrument
   The Peroxide instrument measures Organic and inorganic peroxides in air samplked
   from the Aircraft air sample pipes. It works in a similar manner to the formaldehyde
   instrument, measuring peroxides by the fluorescence of a reaction product

  MAINTENANCE PRACTICES/CAUTIONS
  The following inspection procedure shall be followed before any maintenance is
  undertaken and shall be repeated on completion of the maintenance to ensure that all
  necessary corrective actions have been carried out.

  Inspect all metallic structures and parts for:
  1) Security of attachment, fasteners and visible connections, locking and bonding,
     cleanliness, correct lie and sealing of covers and serviceability of fasteners.
  2) Evidence of leaks –particularly in top boxes, overheating or discharge bulging.
  3) Evidence of obstruction of drains, drainage paths, drain or vent holes.
  4) Distortion, dents, scores, chafing, wear, damaged or missing fasteners, separation of
     bond, deterioration of protective treatment or fluid ingress.

  Inspect all non-metallic structures and parts such as covers, ducting, flexible pipes, flexible
  mountings, seals, insulation of electrical cables, etc for:
  1) Cleanliness, security of attachment (supports), packings and electrical bonding
     correctly positioned, serviceable and secure connections and locking and sufficient free
     length.
  2) Cracks, cuts, chafing, kinking, twisting, crushing, contraction, deterioration, crazing,
     loss of flexibility, overheating, fluid soakage and delamination.

  Inspect all control system components and mechanisms for:
  1) Correct alignment with no fouling, full and free movement, attachments, connection and
     locking security. Operate mechanisms over their complete range of movement to
     facilitate inspection.

2) Distortion, evidence of bowing, scores, chafing, fraying, kinking, wear, flatting, cracks,
   loose fasteners and deterioration of protective treatment.

Inspect all electrical/electronic components for
1) Security, cleanliness and evidence of overheating.
2) Electrical bondings correctly positioned and secure.

ALL MAINTENANCE MUST BE CARRIED OUT FOLLOWING CURRENT FAAM
PROCEDURES BY PERSONNEL APPROVED FOR THAT TASK BY THE HEAD OF
FAAM.

All electrical power to the racks must be disconnected prior to any maintenance task being
carried out.
Care needs to be taken lifting heavy items from the rack.
On completion, ensure that all fasteners are properly tightened and that all electrical
connections are made correctly and secured.
On completion, ensure all loose material/tools are removed and the area is clean.
Refer of Aircraft Maintenance Manual Chapter 92 for Test Procedures.

ATTACHMENT SUMMARY


Perox1(Peroxide Chemistry Unit)               Mass: 15kg      Dimensions: 260 x 380 x 510 mm

        Secured to an AV Tray using 4 of Dzus TL100-BX clasps mounted to the unit by 2 of bolts
per clasp. The AV tray is mounted on 4 of Barrymount AV mounts which in turn are bolted to a
5mm Aluminium shelf by 4 of A102-2D per mount. The shelf (6082 T6 grade Al) is secured to the
rail mounts on the top of the rack by 4 of 3A102-2E bolts.
        4 of Stainless steel 0.6mm thick crash straps are also mounred to the blue trays
Perox2 (Peroxide Electronics Unit)            Mass: 10kg      Dimensions: 260 x 405x 510 mm

        Secured to an AV Tray using 4 of Dzus TL100-BX clasps mounted to the unit by 2 of bolts
per clasp. The AV tray is mounted on 4 of Barrymount AV mounts which are bolted to a 5mm
Aluminium shelf by 4 of A102-2D bolts per mount. The shelf (6082 T6 grade Al) is secured to the
middle Rail mounts of the rack and two Aluminium mounting blocks bolted to the 19” pillars, by
6 of A102-4D bolts
        2 of Stainless steel 0.6mm thick crash straps are also mounred to the blue trays in the fore/aft
direction.

        Secured to an AV Tray using 4 of Dzus TL100-BX clasps mounted to the unit by 2 of
Axxxxx bolts per clasp. The AV tray is mounted on 4 of Barrymount AV mounts thats are bolted to
a 5mm Aluminium shelf with 4 of A102-2D bolts per mount. The shelf (6082 T6 grade Al) is
secured to the bottom rail mounts of the rack by 4 of 3A102-2E bolts. This box also includes the
redundant Power supply.
        2 of Stainless steel 0.6mm thick crash straps are also mounted to the blue trays in the
fore/aft direction.


Pump1 (Blue Charles Austen Inlet Pump)                           Mass: 7kg          Dimensions: 250 x 260x190mm
Directly attached to the bottom 5mm Aluminium shelf (same shelf as Shared 1,2 and Pump2) with 4
of A102-3D bolts

Pump2(rietzchler Piccolino- Sample pump)                         Mass: 10 kg        Dimensions: 250 x 260x190mm

Bolted to an AV tray with 4 of A102-2E bolts. The AV tray is mounted on 4 of barrymount AV
mounts bolted to the bottom Aluminium shelf (same as shared 1,shared2, pump1) with 4 of A102-
2D bolts per mount.

PC1 (Peroxide logging Laptop)                           mass: 6 kg                  Dimensions: 70x435x310 mm

The PC is mounted on a 3mm aluminium (6082 T6 grade Al) shelf attached to 2 of Accuride slides
(80 kg max load each) with 2 of 3F AS bolts per slide. The slides ar attached to the rack 19”
mounts front and back with 4 of 3F AS bolts per slide. The Laptop is held in place by aluminium
blocks held with M4 bolts.


Pc2 (Formaldehyde logging laptop)                       Mass: 6kg                   Dimensions: 70x435x310 mm

The PC is mounted on a 3mm aluminium shelf attached to 2 of Accuride slides with 2 of 3F AS
bolts per slide. The slides ar attached to the rack 19” mounts front and back with 4 of 3F AS bolts
(per slide. The Laptop is held in place by aluminium blocks and a stainless steel strap held with M4
bolts.

Intercom Box:
Mounted in 2U 19” plate directly above the Shared 1 Box using 4 of 3F 8.8 grade M6 bolts
