4 Some Nations Prefer Profits Over People
A vast majority of the world, led by developing nations, has shown
their commitment to a strong, enforceable FCTC that prioritizes health
over tobacco industry profits. However, the United Sates, Japan and
Germany, which are all home to powerful tobacco companies, have
objected to the final draft and insist they will not adopt the treaty in its
current form.
Both the United States, which already has some of the toughest
anti-smoking laws in the world, and Germany are objecting to the
advertising ban because it would violate constitutional right to free
speech.
