Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association, along with our partners
Minnesota Rural Electric Association and American Public Power
Association, is pleased to offer the “2010 Transformer School.” In past
years, we have had requests from students for a more basic start to the
transformer school. As a result, this year we are offering a Basic Single-
Phase Transformer Connection and Theory class as a pre–conference. So
read all the material carefully and make your plans to attend all or part
of the 2010 Transformer School.

We are pleased to have Scott Mieneke as our instructor. Scott has
been an instructor with Northwest Iowa Community College with
over 20 years of experience teaching
lineworkers. Scott has taught the
Transformer Connections session
in South Dakota at the Joint Utility
Training Conference, at the Iowa
Association of Municipal Utilities
Associations Transformer Connection
School, and at the MMUA Transformer
Connections School for the last seven
years. Scott is a highly respected
instructor, using classroom and
hands-on training with miniature
transformers. The miniature
transformers are fusible, able to be
wired in many different configurations,
able to be tested, and energized just
like the transformer banks crews work on at home.

This training is as close to real life as you can get without putting anyone
in an unsafe situation!

Single-Phase Basic Transformer Connection and Theory School

The pre-conference is designed to instruct the basics of single-phase
transformer connections and theory for anyone wanting to better
understand safe work practices, transformer theory, basic calculations,
connections, sizing, and trouble shooting. Scott will be using a
combination of classroom and hands-on teaching.

The pre-conference would be helpful for anyone that is involved with
the electric line crew, from the apprentice to employees from other
departments that may assist as a ground person. The pre-conference
would also be beneficial for the apprentice/journeyman lineworker
wanting to improve their basic transformer knowledge prior to attending
the Three-Phase Transformer Connections School.

Three-Phase Transformer Connections

The three-phase class will start with the basics of transformers. This
refresher will include turns ratios, polarities, calculations, connections,
and troubleshooting.

In the second part of the class, the
student will learn about the basic
three-phase systems with some basic
phasor diagrams and explain the
relationship of the phasor to
the transformer itself.

In the third part of the class,
students will work with
miniature transformers that
are energized and will blow
fuses to let them know if
they have wired something

In the fourth part of the class,
students will continue to build
on the miniature transformer banks and work on troubleshooting. They
will discuss motor rotation as it relates to three-phase systems. They
will also discuss ways to prevent voltage surge during switching a three-
phase bank.

Upon completion of the Three-Phase Transformer Connections class,
the student should have a good understanding of the following topics
related to transformers:

Basic Three-Phase Connections
Delta Connection
Wye Connection
Open Delta Connection
Three-Phase Troubleshooting
