We welcome home, The Reverend Dr. Anna Pinckney Straight. A child of Second
Presbyterian Church, Anna was baptized by the Reverend Dr. Stuart Yandle in
1971 and confirmed in April of 1983. In 1989, Anna left Charleston to attend
Agnes Scott College (in part due to the strong urging of the minister at that time,
the Reverend Walter Cook) and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993.
While a student at Agnes Scott Anna heard a woman preach for the very
first time, and it confirmed a call to ministry she had been feeling for some years.
Anna then went on to attend Union Theological Seminary in New York City and
received her Master of Divinity from there in 1996. While at Union she served as a
seminary assistant at the First Presbyterian Church in the City of New York. Her
first call was in Arthurdale, West Virginia, where, 1997, she was ordained to the
Ministry of Word and Sacrament. In 2002 she was installed as the pastor of the
Greencastle Presbyterian Church in Greencastle, Pennsylvania and in 2006 she
moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina (also known as heaven) to be an Associate
Pastor at the University Presbyterian Church. In 2007 she received her Doctor of
Ministry degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C..
In addition to her work in the congregations she has served, Anna has also
been active in the larger Presbyterian Church, serving on various presbytery
committees and, since 1993, on the General Assembly Nominating Committee,
for which she served as secretary. She currently serves on the Committee on
Ministry for the New Hope Presbytery.
In 2000 she married Benjamin Wamsley Straight (here at Second Pres) and
in 2003 they welcomed their daughter, Sarah Allan Straight.

presented on Sunday, April 5th (Palm Sunday) at 4 PM in the
sanctuary. We will have guest singers joining the chorus, as well
as students from the College singing in the choir and playing
instruments. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings, 7:30 – 8:30 PM
in the Choir Room. Please contact Dr. Julia Harlow for more

As a congregation celebrating its Bicentennial, as a downtown
church in a historic city, and as a church family, we are uniquely
positioned for many opportunities. These opportunities are
spiritual, logistical and philanthropic, and each of us will more
than likely seize several of each over the Bicentennial Celebration period.

It's rare when all of these things come together at once, but that is the
case with our Celebrating 200; Planning for Another 200 historic window project.
As stewards of the incredible structure in which we worship, it is our privilege to
contribute to have these beautiful architectural assets refurbished to their
appropriate splendor.

To learn more about how you can make a difference in this project and
leave a lasting tribute for your family, please contact Bud Hay (795-2916) or
Greer Polansky (849-9720).

Softball & Spring is just around the corner. Our thoughts will soon be turning to
warmer temperatures, blooming flowers, and of course, Sunday afternoon Coed
Recreation League softball. The City of Charleston has a league that plays its
games at the Johns Island complex near the intersection of Main and Maybank.
Games last seven innings or about one hour. Five men and five women are
needed on the field at all times split half and half between the infield, outfield,
and pitcher/catcher. There is a twenty player roster, it would be nice to get at
least eight men and eight women to guard against inevitable personal schedule
conflicts. Games begin March 1 and the season usually ends before Memorial
Day. No games are played on Easter and Mother's Day. The recreation league is
just what it sounds like, fun and not terribly competitive. If you would like to join
or have any questions please contact James Hackett at 729-2023.

East Bay St., Charleston The Israeli-Hamas Conflict: David Versus Goliath? A
Great Debate Series Event. As Israeli tanks depart Gaza and a tenuous cease-
fire holds, the world counts the fiscal and human cost of over two-weeks of
fighting between Israel and Hamas. Both sides claim to be the David fighting the
overwhelming Goliath. Israel claims they are defending themselves from radical
Islamic alliance hellbent on destroying the Jewish people. Hamas argues they
are standing up to the oppressive might of the Zionist state. Which story is the
truth, or the closest to it? Join us on the third floor at Southend Brewery for a
“Great Debate” between an Israeli apologist and critic and extensive audience
Q & A after.
