Transformers
•Transformers are devices that
can increase or decrease
voltage for electrical devices
that need specific amounts.
Types of Transformers

•A step-up transformer will increase the voltage in the
secondary circuit.

more secondary coils = higher secondary voltage
Types of Transformers

•A step-down transformer will decrease the voltage in the
secondary circuit.

fewer secondary coils = lower secondary voltage
•Voltages in the primary and secondary circuits can be
found as follows:

•where,       N1 = # of primary coils
N1 V1
                              N2 = # of secondary coils
N 2 V2                            V1 = primary voltage
V2 = secondary voltage

Example #1
A 50 turn primary coil is supplied with 120 V. What will
the voltage be in the secondary circuit if there are 15 turns in
the secondary coil?
•Current can also be determined.

Example #2
A voltage of 120 V is supplied in primary circuit of a
transformer. If 6.0 V, and 15 A are measured in the
secondary circuit, what is the primary current?
