2001 UK government figures also reveal that the UK’s
creative industries account for over a million jobs and
brought in £112.5 billion to the UK economy. The creative
sector is also globally one of the fastest growing with
exports in this sector growing from $39 billion in 1994 to
                               $54 billion in 2002.

be classified into three main groups, namely uninspired
teaching methods, the rigidity of education systems and
                               problems with student mindsets.

          Uninspired teaching methods

The examination-oriented culture that exists in a number of
Asia-Pacific region such as Hong Kong and Singapore,
serves to inhibit the promotion of creative thinking among
youths in their respective countries. Youths in these
countries recognise examinations as the top priority,
resulting in the entire education process being centralised
around excelling in examinations. In Hong Kong, only
approximately 18% of secondary school graduates are
given opportunities to enter University, which is crucial for
any professional career. The commonplace saying “No
money no talk” in Hong Kong also stresses the urgency of
obtaining desirable exam results. As a result, teachers
merely focus on covering the syllabus that will be tested in
the examinations rather than developing the critical,
creative and caring thinking skills of the students. Also, in
Singapore where humans are the only resources available to
depend on for the aggrandizement of the country, the
situation is exacerbated as an even greater emphasis has to
be placed on education. Rote learning has become a norm
and students have insufficient opportunitied to develop and
          express creative thinking skills.

          Rigidity of educations systems

The lack of creative thinking can be largely attributed to the
rigidity of the education systems, per se, as these very
education systems are the structures which students adhere
to from the very beginning of their learning journey. It is
indeed detrimental to progression of the nation should the
rudimentary platform on which the students learn is itself,
the obstacle to promoting creative thinking. The exam-
oriented culture that forms the basis of the education
systems result in the lack of flexibility and open-
mindedness in the lesson curriculum and holistic
development. This is prevalent in countries with strict
conformist societies such as Japan. Also, in Singapore,

programs implemented such as the Integrated Program
which are meant to encourage expression of creativity is
flawed as there is the gradual tapering off of art-related
subjects other than literature after the first half of the six-
          year education period.

          Problems with student mindsets

Modern student mindsets in the Asia-Pacific region have
not been tuned properly for the development of creative and
critical thinking. Students lack the confidence to think
creatively because of the influence they receive from their
parents, teachers or maybe even friends. The over-
protectiveness of parents the spoon-feeding system in our
education infrastructure cripples the students and renders
them unable to think independently and creatively without
first receiving support from their environment. This is a
recurring problem in many Asia-Pacific countries such as
Singapore, China and India. Students are insecure about
their own work and fear failure and criticism and thus lack
the boldness in exploring new areas and trying new ideas.

Modern western influence has also corrupted the essence of
education and learning for present day students.
Pragmatism has become the sole goal and basis of decisions
students make, resulting in these students regarding other
          creativity-inspiring activities that develop students
holistically as a waste of time since they are not counted in
          the final exam mark.

qualifications. The themes will be thought-provoking to

            Music

            Competitions involving singing, dancing and
songwriting will also be held annually at the primary
and secondary/junior college levels. Judges invited will
be renowned experts in their own fields of music.

               3. Workshops for teachers

Workshops for teachers to learn how to incorporate
critical and creative thinking into their lessons and thus
making the learning process much more vibrant will be
conducted. These workshops will emphasise the
importance of creative thinking and its relevance to
modern day society. These 2-day workshops will be
held twice a year from 9am to 5pm to ensure that the
teachers’ memories are constantly refreshed and they
will also serve as a platform for teachers of one school
to socialize with teachers from others.

               4. Training camps for student leaders

These 4-day 3-night camps aim to equip student leaders
with the ability to promote creative thinking and
subsequently inspire a new generation of youth
organization leaders. These camps will revolve around
participants having to complete tasks creatively be it in
the technical field of sciences or abstract field of arts.
These camps also aim to teach students time
management as this is one of the most overlooked
problems faced by students in school that hinder
            creative thinking.
