First of all, thank you for your interest in the University of Tromsø. We are always happy to host new
international students. On the basis of your enquiry, you are welcome to apply for admission to the
University of Tromsø as a self-financing free mover. Please find enclosed the application form.
Application deadline for the autumn semester is May 1 .
For the spring semester the application deadline is October 1 .

Self-financing free movers are students applying from abroad and can be admitted to a number of
courses taught in English. If qualified, students can also be given admission to take courses in
Norwegian. Students admitted through the self-financing free mover category can be registered for
one or two semesters.

Please note that you have to check language of instruction (in many cases this is Norwegian…) and
examination semester (autumn or spring) for the courses that you are interested in.

Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission as a Self-Financing Free-Mover, you should certify schooling equivalent to
3 years of Norwegian upper secondary school, including proficiency in English. If you are applying for
postgraduate courses, the documentation of additional qualifications will be required.In order for your
application to be processed, all relevant qualifications should be documented and enclosed with your
application. Only original transcripts/ documents or certified copies are accepted. Due to
verification of educational documents, we are sorry to inform you that we do not accept faxed
applications/transcripts or applications/transcripts sent as attachment in e-mails.

Financing of studies
Admission as a self-financing free mover does not include any financial support from the University of
Tromsø or Norwegian authorities. According to the rules set by the Norwegian Directorate of
Immigration (UDI), students from outside EU/EEA must document having at least NOK 42 450 per
semester (approximately US$ 7000) at his or her disposal in a Norwegian bank account, to cover
accommodation and other living costs, before a student residence permit is issued.
