ane Smith* was looking for a church in her new neighborhood. Ellen Murray* was at Sunday Mass in a new parish for the first time, looking for a place where she could become actively involved. Both these women were young professionals, one in her twenties, and the other in her thirties. I met both of them unexpectedly within a few days of each another; Jane at an Advancement Workshop, and Ellen at a parish. Both were looking for a place to worship and asked my advice. I was able to recommend a parish to Jane, near her residence, and to introduce Ellen to the pastor of the parish. Meeting these two women, one a colleague in Advancement, the other a former student, gave me pause. God’s presence is a continual surprise to me; putting me in circumstances I never would have expected. I hope you will see this pattern in the lives of the Sisters you will meet throughout these pages. In addition, though you will not see their stories, the lists of donors tell their own tale. The reasons people support our Sisters and their ministries are varied, but they are also God’s gift to us, both in our lives and in the lives of those we serve. Often, people tell us via note or conversation why they give. They tell of a special way a Sister has touched their lives. Sometimes this happens when a Sister dies and the person wishes to honor that relationship in a special way. We share excerpts from a few of these notes throughout the donor lists. They may be about a particular Sister, but
they represent ways many of the Sisters have lived and served. Though we are often remembered as educators, we are committed to all the works of mercy. The needs of our neighbor determine our service and often it goes beyond our ordinary work. These are uncertain times for many and we are deeply grateful to all who help us to serve the neediest among us. When we work together the future looks brighter. Thank you.

Change in Office Accounting Procedure
Beginning January of 2008, donations designated by donors for Bethany Health Care Center and Bethany Hill School have been, and will continue to be, forwarded directly to the Advancement Offices of those institutions. Gifts are recorded in their databases, and their donors are acknowledged. These institutions now have their own offices and implementing the change has stream-lined the accounting process. The Mission Advancement Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph at the Motherhouse will continue to accept, process, and acknowledge gifts made to the Congregation, to our elderly and infirm Sisters, to many who are in our local religious community, as well as our retirement house, St. Joseph Hall, The Literacy Connection, Casserly House, and St. Joseph Retreat Center. I hope this does not cause you, our wonderful donors, confusion. If you have any questions, please call 617-746-2115 and speak with me.

Sister Marie Faubert
Believing in Divine Providence
by Lucia C. Papile ister Marie Faubert’s call is to facilitate the empowerment of people. She says it is her gift. Currently, she is a tenured, full professor and the Director of the Counselor Education Program in the School of Education at the University of Saint Thomas (UST) in Houston, TX. Her work has appeared in many books and articles. However, these accomplishments do not come close to explaining the effect she has had, nor do they tell the journey she has taken in the 50 plus years she has been a Sister of St. Joseph. Sister Marie is so much more! “My mission is about helping people develop in a way they can engage the world. People who are not empowered cannot engage the world.” She means the entire world. Her mission of empowerment has taken her from Boston, MA, to Chicago, IL, Raleigh, NC, Kingston, Jamaica, Houston, TX, and the Palestinian Authority in the Holy Land. Sister Marie has worked with those who otherwise may not have had an opportunity to develop - those on the margins. “Racism is very deep in the United States and hasn’t changed much. It displays itself in more subtle ways than it did in the past.” From where did Sister Marie’s faith evolve? She grew up in Jamaica Plain, an Irish Catholic Boston neighborhood in the 1950’s. She was the only student in public school who had a French name. She says, “Any stop or turn on her journey has always been the direct result of God’s Providence. I am a person who believes in the Providence of God. My life has been a series of opportunities – gifts from God to which I have responded.” Sister’s journey of empowerment began with a lecture she attended in 1967 while teaching at Sacred Heart High School in Newton, MA. The educator and social advocate, Jonathan Kozol, spoke about his experience with African-American colleges and universities. As Sister Marie listened to the Q and A, she noticed a remarkable trend - the AfricanAmerican members of the audience, the group Kozol was speaking out for, were challenging his assertions. “When I heard the responses of the audience, I realized white people have no idea about African-American culture,” she said.
S
“My life is a series of opportunities to which I have responded by the grace of God.”
The incident stayed with her. She wanted to know what it was people like herself and Kozol needed to understand to make a difference. Consequently, Sister read, and only read, African-American authors. She integrated their voices into her lexicon of understanding, and was introduced to Black liberation theologians. She read Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire when it was first published in English. Her education was intuitive “I learned how to deal with oppression, privilege, empowerment, and awareness,” she explained. Her newly acquired knowledge, abilities, and skills had practical applications to her science students at St. Joseph Community School in Roxbury, MA, featured in the PBS documentary, Eyes on the Prize. “I feel the responsibility to deal with racism when I recognize it.” By the time Sister Marie arrived at the next stop on her journey – teaching in Chicago’s South Side, she was ready to fulfill her mission. In Chicago, as in Boston, she continued to work with people from the poorest neighborhoods. Her impact was so deep that a student she taught in 1976 still sends her a Mother’s Day card every year. Sister would later use these experiences as the basis for her doctoral dissertation at North Carolina State University. In 1983, Sister focused on areas outside the classroom and accepted a position as the Assistant to the Director of the Office for African-American Ministry and Evangelization for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, NC. There, she helped develop Kujenga, an African-American youth leadership training program. “I can’t just watch injustice happen. I see too much suffering.” She began to realize that another part of her mission was to, “… help people of privilege understand what privilege means.” She recalls a time when she was going through a metal detector while visiting a detention center for youth, and was flagged on through. She said, “No, I will pass through the metal detector.” She recognized her privilege. Another time she went to vote during an election and got there before the polls opened. When the polls opened the poll worker waved her through, ignoring the African-American woman who had been there before Sister Marie arrived. Sister then told the poll worker

that the other woman was first. Her office in North Carolina was a place that proved pivotal in her journey. “My life is a series of opportunities to which I have responded by the grace of God.” Her job at the Chancery was the first time Sister Marie had not been in the classroom since she began teaching in 1956, she had a request. “I told the Bishop that I wanted to study.” She planned to enter a graduate program in Adult Education, but, as Divine Providence would have it, she ended up in Counselor Education because of a spontaneous encounter with her soon-to-be mentor Dr. Don C. Locke. Together they worked to empower African-American students in rural North Carolina. She worked with Locke on “Getting on the Right Track,” a program sponsored by Bell South. “I was the only applicant for the doctoral program whose experience was focused on African-American high school students. I applied to the doctoral program and let the Holy Spirit do her work.” In 1992, Sister Marie received her EdD in Counselor Education from North Carolina State University. “It was the first time in my life I studied full-time. It took me 12 years to get a bachelor’s degree and I was working when I earned both of my master’s degrees,” she explained of the significant event. After her EdD, Divine Providence then had to provide Sister Marie with a new opportunity to teach. “I went to Pembroke State University, NC. It could have been a wonderful place, but it was very racist. It was segregated and about 100 years behind the times.” Her experience at Pembroke supported her belief that there can be no charity without justice in the true Christian sense because “it is impossible to love that which is not equal to us.” By now, Sister Marie had learned that she was not the one planning her life. If she had been at the helm, she would never have planned for the countless hours of writing syllabi as a first-year assistant professor at Pembroke State. However, once again Providence took over and gave her the opportunity at UST, her current position. “The head of our department at Pembroke would just throw any ads for positions into our mailboxes. I saw the ad for UST. I mailed the nine syllabi that I had just finished with a cover letter. UST called me and flew me to Houston on Friday, and hired

me on Monday.” St. Thomas had been looking for a director for a new program in Counselor Education for two years. The hours Sister spent on syllabi writing helped seal the deal. She is beginning her 15th year as the first director of the growing Counselor Education Program. Presently, Sister Marie’s journey has a global dimension. She is able to use her experience to help educators in Beit Sahour, Palestine, connected to Holy Child, a center for traumatized children. She teaches graduate level courses to the educators. In addition to classroom work and theses direction, Sister Marie teaches on-line classes. Students may write their theses in Arabic or English. This could have presented a problem, as Sister Marie speaks no Arabic, but once again, Divine Providence blessed her in the person of one of her Egyptian Christian Students at St. Thomas’s who introduced her to the Arabic speaking people in the Houston area. They have willingly and generously helped her with translation. In keeping with the mission of empowerment, plans are to turn the Center, begun by the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, over to the local Palestinian Christians. Sister Marie thinks she might retire in a few years when she turns 80. “If I still feel like I can do more, then I will take it year by year. I will respond to the Providence of God.” ł

Sister Catherine Mulkerrin
In loving Memory of Sister Catherine Mulkerrin, whose tireless efforts on behalf of children and whose concern for the integrity of the Church were boundless.
Dr. & Mrs. Richard W. Young - Needham, MA
Remembering a great woman: Sister Catherine Mulkerrin! She had a heart of gold, a twinkle in her eye that reflected her soul, and a delightful dimple that set her apart. And, indeed, by her very nature, she stood “apart from” injustice and always with the Dear Neighbor. She will be dearly missed, as she was dearly loved.

Sister Theresa Donovan
“Alive with Music”
by Lucia C. Papile verything about Sister Theresa Donovan is musical – from her soft lilting voice to her gracefully tapered pianist’s hands. Sister Theresa has spent most of her 60 years with the Sisters of St. Joseph as a middle school teacher, and music has always been her ministry. Sister Theresa’s love of music began long ago. When she was eight years old, Sister Theresa and her family used to visit relatives. Each family had something that her family didn’t - a piano. They would all gather around the piano and sing. Sister was intrigued; she wanted to play the piano so her parents sent her to a community center in her Dorchester neighborhood and paid 25 cents for weekly lessons. The children all sat around one piano, and each was given a cardboard set of piano keys to practice. “I would play my songs on the dining room table. So finally, my parents knew I really meant business,” Sister Theresa said. The problem was that this was during the Great Depression. “I was a Depression girl and times were tough.” But her father’s friend said he had just the thing; Sister Theresa soon began studying piano under the tutelage of Sister Magdalen at St. William’s in Dorchester. It was Sister Magdalen who would set the course of Sister Theresa’s life. “It was meeting her and my lovely teachers at St. William’s that made me decide to enter the convent,” Sister Theresa explained. Sister Magdalen’s guidance and inspiration was worth it. “She was fantastic because she introduced us to every kind of music.” Sister Theresa studied with her mentor until ninth grade. “I would accompany students who entered radio talent shows.” There were also First Friday Prayer Services, concerts, and tableaus with music. “The parish was alive with music,” she added. Later, Sister Magdalen encouraged her to form a band of her own. She became the only female member of a jazz band that played every Friday night. By the time Sister Theresa entered Dorchester High School for Girls, Sister Magdalen had given her her wings and Sister Theresa became inspired by her new teachers. “They were the most gifted women I think I ever met.” The teachers soon found out about Sister Theresa’s musical talent and asked her to play during gym class. Soon her parent’s investment began to pay off. During her junior year Sister Theresa began accompanying a ballet class’s rehearsal. The difficult pieces proved to be a good training for Sister Theresa. “It was good preparation because I had to keep beat with the dancers,” she said. “It kept my fingers going all the time.” Her hard work and
E
skill afforded her an opportunity not usually given to a high school junior. She was asked to play for graduation ceremonies at Boston’s Symphony Hall. Sister Theresa entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1948. The order quickly learned of Sister Theresa’s musical talent. She was assigned to play for Sister Carmela Sister Theresa Donovan Gambale, who trained in Italy as an opera singer. “I might never have been introduced to opera,” she added. Soon after that Sister Theresa was asked to play the organ. She was not confident about her ability to master such a complicated instrument, but did as requested. Sister Valeria introduced her to the organ, showed her the buttons and said, “This is how you play it.” The next thing Sister Theresa knew she was playing at Benediction, and all the Masses. “I never took an organ lesson in my life.” In 1950 Sister Theresa began her teaching career. Her talent and love for music helped her win the hearts of her students. She went on to teach at several schools in the Archdiocese. “One of my students from Marlboro is a teacher and a successful pianist. I hear from him quite often.” The ideals of commitment, dedication and hard work that Sister Theresa learned during the Great Depression stayed with her. Even while working as a full-time teacher she taught piano after school and worked with school choirs and parish productions. “I didn’t know if I was coming or going,” she said. If that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, she also worked as the Music Director at St. Helen’s in Norwell and has played for hundreds of weddings, funerals, and community events at the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Motherhouse. Additionally, for the past 20 years, she has been the accompanist for Belles and Beaus, a senior citizens music group. Sister Theresa’s last assignment, where she spent most of her professional life, was at Sacred Heart, Weymouth. She was there for 35 years, leaving four years ago. Since leaving school, Sister Theresa has not slowed down. The calendar of the Belles and Beaus is filled with performances. She is still plays at weddings, funerals, prayer services, and community activities and says, “Music is a wonderful vehicle to get people together for many different reasons.” ł

Hospitality House Broadens its Service
he Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston’s Hospitality House began in the year 2000 with five Sisters willing to form a local community that would welcome women discerning a vocation to religious life, a place to come and stay. Over the years women have prayed with the Sisters, while continuing their daily work life. Several women have entered the Congregation’s formation process and become Sisters. This year one has professed initial commitment and another celebrated profession of final vows. Others have stayed for a while, and come to realize God is calling them to something other than vowed religious life. Last year, in addition to its original purpose, students from Fontbonne Academy’s ministry group visited the Hospitality House and participated in a Day of Prayer. Spiritual Days for other youth groups have also been offered. Recently, nine students from Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia requested hospitality for a week in order to immerse themselves in various service opportunities around the city of Boston. The students volunteered at The Women’s Lunch Place. They tutored at Casserly House, and visited immigrants in the Adult Literacy and afterschool programs. They also worked in an afterschool program at Sacred Heart School in Roslindale. “The Boston Immersion trip was one of the most eye-opening and life-changing experiences of my life,” one volunteer wrote. “The stay at the Hospitality House also provided opportunities to share stories at suppertime, which was enriching for the Sisters, and allowed down-time for students to process their experiences,” Sister Maryann Enright explained. “It was the injustices that the immigrants and lowincome families face that tore at the hearts of the volunteers.” Working with immigrants impacted each volunteer in lifechanging ways. One volunteer commented, “The immigrants made me want to work harder because of how hard they worked.” “Many of them (the immigrants) just got off from working the night shift at the hotels and then spent four hours trying to learn English,” another wrote. The trip to Boston and the stay with the Sisters at the Hospitality House was a learning experience for the university students. Comments from the volunteers include: “We all had our eyes opened to see one another and our neighbors differently,” “I discovered a diversity that I could not have imagined in the past.” “The happiness I felt during my week in Boston made me realize that I need to make more time in my schedule to let God work through me.” The five Sisters living at Hospitality House work in various ministries in addition to opening their home to others. This added ministry gives their guests the time and opportunity to be in touch with the spirit in their lives. ł

Sister Laura Turbini
Religious Women in the Workplace
by Judy Wasserman
W
hen Sister Laura Turbini faced discrimination against women and, more specifically, against religious women in the workplace, she held her head high, and persevered. That courage and strength set her on a successful career path which led to many different companies and cities, and finally to her current position as chemistry lab manager and principal scientist for Research in Motion (RIM), the firm that developed the BlackBerry. Her vast knowledge and experience in the field of chemistry apparently made quite an impression on the RIM executives for they created the job for her. In a recent interview, Sister Laura, who became a Sister of St. Joseph in 1960, described her lab at RIM as “CSI for electronics.” The lab, she said, has developed processes which can determine what caused someone’s cell phone to stop working. When Sister Laura is not working at RIM, she is an adjunct professor in chemistry at the universities of Toronto and Waterloo. From her home in Waterloo, Ontario, Sister Laura spoke of the importance of “educating the next generation,” and “contributing to the growth of knowledge.” Sister Laura’s father served in the U.S. Navy, and the family moved around a lot. She was born in Panama, and by the time she was a teenager, they had lived in Boston, California, Hawaii, and Rhode Island. She earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Regis College, Weston, MA, and then taught at Fontbonne Academy in Milton for four years. In 1974, she received her doctorate in Material Science and Engineering from Cornell University. After sending out many resumes and fighting discrimination, Sister Laura got a job in 1977 with Western Electric in New York. She was the company’s first woman to be promoted from within, and was named research leader. Later, she was promoted again, and was the editor of a company publication, Western Electric Engineer. She went on to be engineering manager at AT&T Technologies in Denver, CO, associate director of research and

professor of materials science & engineering at Georgia Tech, and director of a micro electronics research collaborative between university and industry in Canada. Sister Laura said she appreciated the challenges of her various jobs, but sometimes the stress level was difficult. Recalling her job search in 1974, Sister Laura explained that at one interview the interviewer expressed concern that she was a nun. Sister Laura answered confidently, “Some of my best friends are agnostics and atheists. I am not here to convert people. I am just a presence.” While her career path has physically separated her from the “Boston” Sisters, she is very much an active member, keeping up with all that happens. She recalled that throughout our history, sisters have used their talents and given their earnings, as all sisters do, for the support of all, often enabling others to work with the poor and needy. This Sister of St. Joseph and successful scientist concluded, “Sisters of St. Joseph stand before the world as a sign that God lives.” ł

I make this donation in memory of Sister Marinus. The (Donor Day) celebration on June 1st was wonderful. I know well the task of planning such an event requires tremendous effort. It is always a joyful time to celebrate with the community which is a very special part of my life. Many blessings, I’m sure, are in store for the tremendous work of the CSJs.

Sister was indeed a special person. Her cheerful countenance always lifted everyone’s spirit. All who came in contact with Sister Marinus were and felt a special bond of love and friendship. We at St. Mary’s Parish in East Walpole were indeed fortunate to have Sister working here for so many years. We still look for and feel her presence in the Parish Center.

Sister Elizabeth Brabazon
. . . Please accept the enclosed donation in honor and in memory of dear Sister Elizabeth Brabazon. Sister Elizabeth was very near and dear to my mother throughout her tenure at St. Helen’s in Norwell. My memories of her are wonderful. Continued Blessings in your work.
Susan Setterland - Hanover, MA

. . . She was a dear, holy woman, who was kind and gentle to people. She was a tiny woman, but was a giant in her love for God, wasn’t she? . . . I especially loved how she kept up her wonderful appearance, being so particular, dressed in conservative suits that were perfect for her. I will miss her very much. You and her family are in my heart and prayers.

Sister Frances Sears
. . . I was blessed to call Sister my friend. . . . she was a treasured influence on my life. Her life mirrored her love and commitment to the Way, Truth, and the Life. And we who knew her at Regis benefited from her life. I shall always remember her smile, her laugh, and wonderful sense of humor. Sister was a woman filled with joy . . .I am happy that Sister is now at peace. I pray for the dedication of all of you in the Congregation. Continue your blessed mission.
Marie Tassinari - Arlington, MA
. . . We knew she was young because when the nuns left chapel, they proceeded in age in the order and Sisters Frances, Flavia and Garnier brought up the rear. Sister was a wonderful inspiration to so many of us, and we miss her. May this little contribution continue her memory.
Janice Power - Waltham, MA
November 21, 1921 - April 21, 2008
I was saddened to read about the death of Sister Frances Sears. I first met her at a nursing home where her mother was a resident and I worked. Then I was happy to meet her at our Parish of St. Edward’s where she was Director of Religious Education.

Regis College, Weston, MA (1950-1954) Where do I begin. Regis was my refuge for four years . . . my family of four adult children and my husband have benefited immensely from my Regis education. Please do not discount the ripple effect of future generations of “Regis children.” Lastly, I must mention Sr. John Sullivan who interpreted the whole world for us in her English classes. I am a better teacher and mother because of her. . .she was a unique role model. She, too, understood the third world and very early made us aware of it. Perhaps, the late forties and the early fifties were the basis of the Regis Outreach today?

Fiscal Year 2008 Advancement Giving Report
Center is planning a celebration to mark the 35th anniversary of its founding. Thanks to your support, the Retreat Center continues to be a place of welcome for those seeking to deepen their relationship with their God. Casserly House in Roslindale received a grant of $13,000 and, through fund raising activities and your generosity, added another $32,655 of financial support for adults and children served through its programs. Donations made to Bethany Health Care and Bethany Hill School will now be reported in their own Annual Report.

e gratefully acknowledge the following gifts and grants totaling 1.8 million dollars, given during the fiscal year July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. These gifts represent the generosity of our donors and enable us to support our retired Sisters in ministry, care for our ill and infirm Sisters and continue our CSJ mission of meeting the needs of the “Dear Neighbor.” The fall and spring appeals, designated for the General Fund, received 2539 donations totaling $307, 439. This was an increase of $20,000 over Fiscal Year 2007. The continued donor generosity in response to this semi-annual appeal allows the Congregation to attend to the greatest needs of the Sisters and our ministerial work. The Diocesan and National collections for the care of our retired Sisters amounted to $423,519. These collections, from parishioners within the diocese and around the country, significantly assist in the support and care of our elderly and infirm Sisters. The Special Appeals gifts for the upkeep of Holy Spirit Memorial Garden and the Motherhouse Chapel totaled $14,075. An additional $45,385 was given by donors designated for projects or ministries.

The Congregation received $652,863 through the generosity of friends whose planned giving provided funds through their wills. Another $10,304 was directed to a specific ministry. Planned Giving is an important support for the future of the Sisters and their ministries. Remembering and supporting the Sisters of St. Joseph through Planned Giving, stocks, in kind donations, and supporting the ministries through Connecting increases our continuing efforts to connect neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God. The mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston is strengthened by your continuing support of their mission and ministries. We thank you and ask your support of all we do as we celebrate 135 years and move into the future. ł

MeMorial and all occasion card PrograMs
Our All Occasion Card Program has expanded to include the selection of Christmas Cards featured here. Choosing our cards is a generous way of celebrating the lives of relatives and friends. Throughout the year, those you wish to remember through our card programs are remembered in prayer by the Sisters and Associates. We encourage our donors to request family and friends to remember the Congregation by sending donations “in lieu of flowers.” All donations are acknowledged by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston’s Office of Mission Advancement. If you wish to make a donation, know someone who would like to, or are in need of Christmas Cards for a relative or friend, please contact Cheryl Duggan, Mission Advancement Coordinator, at the Office of Mission Advancement at 617-746-2114 or email cheryl.duggan@csjboston.org.
