Teacherʼs notes: Subscription or sign in or join us or register!
Subscriptions, registration, memberships or “sign ups” as the students call them are
requisite activities for many of the resources used in this workbook. In order to
register, students and the teacher must have an active email account. This allows the
owners of the resources the ability to track end users for behavioral and business
reasons.
Most sites have a page that looks like this one, used
at the Ask500People site. A “join now”, “log in” or
“sign up” requires three elements: an email address,
a username and a password.

Students themselves generate usernames. These
are often altered, as the millions of users on the
Internet will also have similar notions and names.
Most of the “sign up” areas have a button called
“check availability.” This process may delay the
student sign in time.

Sites such as Voki use your email as
the username. You as the leader of
the class must be aware of these
                                             options before the lesson proceeds.

                                          General “sign up” steps
                                          1.Obtain an email
                                          2.Make a username(sketch on paper)
                                          3.Think of a password
                                          4.Click on “Sign up”
                                          5.Complete a form
                                          6.Open email

Other sites, like TeacherTube,
request a lot of information that
may make you as an educator
feel uncomfortable. You may
instruct your students to put in
generic dates such as January
1st 1990. Even indicating
gender is an issue that you
may encounter on these “sign
up” pages. Use your best
judgement.

TeacherTube also uses
“Captcha” technology.
Captchas prevent automated
computers servers from signing

up and becoming part of the community. This is another way of preventing spamming.
Only humans can enter these visual codes.

Passwords
Passwords of at least nine alphanumeric characters (both numbers and letters)
that cannot be guessed by others should be encouraged. A trick is to combine
two things that they will remember, like a postal code and a petʼs name.
“rover23345”

Sites also have a - terms of use agreement. You may read this but to join the
site you must check a box to indicate agreement with the siteʼs terms.

Other information about age, nation, gender and others are up to the teacherʼs
discretion.

At the sign in, the students are also asked to enter their email address. This is
common and they should be aware to indicate that they do not want to receive
the siteʼs newsletter at this time.

The first worksheet, “Sign up” walks the students through the process of signing
up for the site Ask500people.com. The teacher and students will all have to
register to complete this activity.

Try this with the students to familiarize them and yourself with the process of
registering for a site. Be aware that some sites do not require registration.
