Dear Parents/Carers,

Book Week
It has been great fun seeing all the staff and children dressed up as story book characters today, thank
you for all your help in creating a costume for your child. Our fancy dress winners were:
Alexander Elliott, a Cowboy, Chloe Richardson, Princess Jasmine, Charlie Swale,The Hungry Caterpillar,
Ella Shanahan-Kitt, a Pirate, Hayden Wilson, a Wicked Witch, Jasper Bowry, Gumdrop, Jamie Duchacek,
The Tin Man, Calum Thomas, Where’s Wally.
The children also took part in the Book Week competitions – winners will be announced next week.
I would like to thank the helpers who manned the book shop and all the parents and Governors who came
to read stories – it was much appreciated by the children. The children were also enthralled by our visiting
author – Jamie Rix who read some of his Grisly Tales. Ask the children to tell you about the chocolate
biscuit story – that went down particularly well and it will probably put you off chocolate for a while!.
Finally I would like to thank the staff for their creative writing efforts placed around the school – all
original work and most importantly to thank Miss Marshall who organised the whole event.

Apologies
It has been brought to my attention that the gates were not unlocked on time yesterday fro which I
apologise. We have reviewed the situation and hope that there will be no further repeat. The gates will be
unlocked from 8.35am in the morning starting with the entrance on Victoria Road and then locked from
8.55am (it takes about 10 minutes to unlock all the gates). In the afternoon the gates will be unlocked
from 2.55pm again starting with the Victoria Road gate. Gates will then be locked again at 3.20pm so that
children attending after school clubs are secure.
Harvest Festival
You are all invited to join us for Harvest Festival either on Thursday at 11.15am at school for Nursery and
Reception children or Friday at 10.00am at St John’s Church. Harvest gifts are welcomed and will be taken
to Nightingale Court by the School Council during the afternoon.

Parent Voice meeting
We held a Parent Voice meeting on Tuesday at which we reviewed and agreed the school Behaviour Policy.
This policy is available on our website and a paper copy is available in school. We also discussed the
school’s focus on developing writing this year along with the introduction of a Virtual learning Platform
which is to be piloted in year 4 and rolled out across the school over the next two years. There will be a
parent information session before the children can access this site. We also discussed the effectiveness
of our texting and email service as well as mentioning the new electronic information boards in reception
and under the covered walkway – I hope these are of use to you. We will be sending out the remaining data
collection sheets soon to update parent information; this will include your email address and ability to
access the internet so that we can email newsletters home rather than paper copies to those who would
like to receive information in this way. Other matters raised by parents were parking outside the school
and ensuring that pupils who bring bikes to school have access to external gates at the end of after school
clubs. I will be looking into this last matter this week.

Children’s Centre News
We are hosting a Healthy Eating talk to be given by school nurses Jenny King and Julia King on Tuesday
13th October at 2pm in the hall at St John’s Primary School.
We know that there are many issues that parents might like to have further information on and we would
be happy to host talks on other subjects. If you have any ideas or suggestions for other activities do give
us a ring or email the centre.
Next weeks activities will be Stay and Play sessions for registered child minders on Tuesday at 10.00,
Wednesday or Thursday afternoon 1.30 – 3.00 for any parent or carer and our Parent and Toddler group
on Wednesday morning 10 - 11.15.
Contact Charlotte 01483 476450, childrenscentre@st-johns-knaphill.surrey.sch.ukwith any queries.

Early reminder
Half term commences at 3.05 pm on Friday 23rd October.

Yours sincerely,

Christine Parker

Headteacher
