 A concentration in




   Suggested Graphic Design Course List for Majors and Minors
   Below is a suggested course list for a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a Major or Minor in
   Graphic Design in chronological order.

    Major Minor Course Description
    Semester 1 All classes below are 4 credit unless otherwise noted.

    Semester 2 All Graphic Design courses below require ARTS210
       •         •     ARTS305 – Introduction to Graphic Design Software


       •         •     ARTS215 – History of Graphic Design (offered Spring semester only, may count as
                       Art History requirement w/approval from advisor)

                       Choose at least one below and supplement with summer internships. Courses can
                       be repeated, can be taken from 1 to 4 credits.

   Majors require 40 credits . Minimum core classes for a BA are: 210, 305, 310, 315, 412, 410 & 478.
   Minors requires 6 courses (minimum).
Requirements for Studio Art Major - BA Degree
1. Three level-one courses (12 credits):
   ARTS210 – Graphic Design I
   ARTS161 – Beginning Photography
   One of these:          ARTS171 – Drawing I
                          ARTS230 – Sculpture I
                          ARTS240 – Painting I

2. One intermediate, one advanced, and one special studio project in one area of concentration (12 credits):
   Intermediate           ARTS305 – Intro. to Graphic Design Software
   Advanced               ARTS410 – Graphic Design III
   Special studio project ARTS478 – Special Studio Projects: Portfolio Preparation

3. One art history course (4 credits):
   ARTS215 – History of Graphic Design
   (will count as art history course with approval of advisor)

4. Three studio art electives (12 credits):
   ARTS310 – Graphic Design II
   ARTS412 – Graphic Design Software II
   ARTS315 – Communicating with Type

5. For the BA degree, transfer students may transfer four courses equivalent to courses offered in the studio
   program, no more than two of which may be in the area of concentration.

TOTAL = 40 credits.
A minimum of five courses must be at the 300 or 400 level. Minimum core classes for a BA are: 210, 305, 310,
315, 412, 410 & 478.



Requirements for a Minor in Studio Art
A minor in studio art consists of a minimum of six courses distributed as follows:

1. Beginning, intermediate and advanced level courses in design:
   Beginning               ARTS161 – Beginning Photography
   Intermediate            ARTS210 – Graphic Design I
   Advanced                ARTS305 – Intro. to Graphic Design Software

2. An additional introductory-level course in an area other than the chosen concentration:
   One of these:            ARTS171 – Drawing I
                            ARTS230 – Sculpture I
                            ARTS240 – Painting I

3. Two courses chosen in consultation with a faculty adviser. One of these courses must be at the advanced
   300-400 level, and may or may not be in the area of concentration:
   Course I               ARTS310 – Graphic Design II OR ARTS215 – History of Graphic Design
   Course II              ARTS412 – Graphic Design Software II OR ARTS315 – Communicating with Type

4. For the minor in studio art, transfer students may transfer two courses equivalent to courses offered
   in the studio program. TOTAL: 6 courses (minimum).

Transfer Credits
Most community colleges offer Art courses that fulfill major requirements and electives. Please note that a
maximum of 4 transferred courses may count toward the major. Additional courses may transfer and count
as part of the 126 credits needed for graduation and completion of an Art courses will automatically fulfill the
Aesthetics and Humanities General Education Requirement.
