Sama wants probe into doctor’s rape 26 Nov 2010 The South African Medical Association (Sama) wants a comprehensive investigation into the rape of a doctor at the Pelonomi Hospital after charges against two suspects were dropped. The doctor was on duty at the Bloemfontein hospital last month when she was struck on the head with a brick, forced into a room and raped. Sama’s Dr. Norman Mabasa said they are shocked that charges against the two suspects were withdrawn. “There seems to be no thorough engagement on this issue to apprehend the suspects,” said Mabasa. Three men were arrested for the rape but two of them were released from custody on Wednesday when their DNA could not be linked to the crime. Investigations continue as the third suspect, a 16-year-old boy, was the only suspect singled out by the victim. Sama said the move will discourage other rape victims from reporting their cases.
