Class: Sulfonamides / antiinfective / antiprotozoal
Bactrim / co-trimoxazole

• Not a true antibiotic
• Highly effective against some bacteria
• Useful for many types of infection including PCP in AIDS
  patients

Most endwith azine or oxazole
Added bonus:
• Convenient bid dosing
• Very inexpensive

    Tetracyclines (ends with cycline)
Vibramycin / doxycycline
Often used in pts allergic to penicillin
• Not for pregnant women
• Not for children < 8 y/o
• Causes permanent staining of teeth to yellow, gray or brown
Useful for those allergic to PCN

              Most end with cycline

Used for prevention / treatment of TB
 INH / isoniazid
Note:

• Neuro SE

Flagyl / metrodidazole
Indication:
  - some bacteria
  - protozoa
  - fungus
  - ameba
Note: interaction w/ alcohol

   Topical Antifungal Agents
Used for fungal infections like
• tinea pedis (athletes foot)
• tinea cruris (jock itch)
• tinea corporis (ringworm)
• various “yeast” infections (oral thrush, diaper rash,
  vaginal candidiasis
  Monistat 7 / miconazole

Diflucan / fluconazole

Indication: Used for cryptococcal meningitis
   & various candidal infections
Many antifungals (not all) end with azole
