                                   The reality of today’s marketplace dictates that service provider networks must change to remain
                                   competitive. New modulation techniques, faster metro optical fiber rings, voice, high-speed data and
                                   multimedia services are deployed closer than ever to the edge of the network. These changes are largely
                                   upgrades and reconfigurations designed to improve reliability, availability, accuracy and breadth of
                                   services. Establishing a solid network foundation rooted in connectivity has already proven successful as

                                   Technologies such as High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) mean the evolution of 3G toward
                                   higher bit rates and improved capacity, and these technologies have greatly reduced the cost of
                                   delivering data services.
                                   The demand for broadband services, which has exploded over the last few years, has led to a
                                   significant impetus in growth of UMTS networks. The communication industry is preparing for
                                   a rise in users of services.

                                   “Beyond 3G” mobile-phone networks coming up
                                   Mobile devices are developing into multimedia devices, no longer delivering voice only. The merger of
                                   mobile phone, camera and MP3 is only the first step in a chain of new possibilities. The development
                                   of network technology is not standing still: work is underway to develop mobile multimedia, broadband
                                   and secure communication over a single device – functional anywhere in the world. With this in mind,
                                   developers are working on the improvement of familiar technologies, on higher data-transfer speeds
                                   and higher spectrum efficiency, as well as on completely new ideas for new “beyond 3G” mobile-phone
                                   provisioning. This extremely rapid development towards mobile broadband phone systems with very
                                   high capacity will only be practical, for consumers and carriers alike, if transmission efficiencies
                                   improve proportionately.


                                   Competitive networks require flexibility
                                   The increased complexity of network infrastructure demands a high degree of flexibility for
                                   reconfigurations and upgrades (e.g. new network components, new lines and new or upgraded
                                   software). This requires the ability to make seamless network transitions, including equipment
                                   additions, network configuration changes, line testing and monitoring and rapid re-routing of
                                   disrupted service. In addition, large investments are required to upgrade old networks or to develop
                                   new ones. Greater bandwidths require more cells, each covering smaller areas, to transmit larger data
                                   volumes. Greater bandwidth also requires network operators to migrate from circuit-switched networks
                                   to packet-switched networks, and while leveraging existing copper and using more fiber.
                                   The investment of time and money needed to run the network can have a direct effect on the
                                   profitability of the business. While the initial investment in flexible connectivity is relatively small, if this
                                   flexibility is not in place, it can pose a huge revenue risk and result in dissatisfied subscribers. In today’s
                                   competitive environment, no network operator can afford this risk, much less the cost implications if the
                                   cell site or portion of the network is not functioning.

                                   Proactive network monitoring for fault localization
                                   In traditional copper networks, it was easy to access handoff points for test purposes.
                                   As enhanced data services become more critical to mobile subscribers, loss of signal or extended
                                   downtime in the network is no longer tolerated. Problems must be found and limited before they
                                   threaten network integrity. Both for leased lines and leased bandwidths, as well as for every optical
                                   connection point in the network, network operators must be able to identify and solve problems

                                   Cross-connection encourages seamless expansion, simple rerouting and quick restoration for today's
                                   evolving networks. Reduce costs, increase revenues, and satisfy customers are the tenets of service
                                   providers as they balance today’s tenuous financial climate with the promise of next-generation products
                                   and services. And as networks migrate and expand to include more complex services, reliability and
                                   flexibility become even more vital to their success. That is why digital system cross-connect (DSX)
                                   solutions remain the best option for connecting network elements.

                                   The deployment of DSX platforms eases network expansion; allows circuit access for non-intrusive
                                   testing, monitoring, and patching; and establishes a central termination point for efficient circuit
                                   rearrangements. It allows operators to add a migration of technological platforms and bring advanced
                                   services closer to customers while preserving integrity at the network’s core.


                                   Make the Connection
                                   Telecommunications networks must be designed to seamlessly absorb new growth, accommodate
                                   wiring changes, and restore failed circuits quickly. In its journey from source to destination, a signal
                                   travels through a gamut of telecommunications equipment that transforms, grooms, multiplexes,
                                   switches, demultiplexes, and routes the signal. Operators have three accepted methods of routing this
                                   signal: direct connect, interconnect, and cross-connect via a DSX. Direct connection and interconnection
                                   suffer from significant limitations, but the DSX remains fully capable of providing optimal flexibility,
                                   reliability, and access to the network. DSX, coupled with a robust connectivity infrastructure, enhances
                                   several work operations:
                                   • Faster service provisioning with greater capacity
                                   • Increased service reliability and protection of electronic equipment and network elements
                                   • Fundamental maintenance including physical layer access
                                   • Quicker service recovery
                                   • Simple, uncomplicated rollovers in future network migration planning

                                   Connectivity typically accounts for 1% to 10% of the upfront costs of network deployment. A small

                                   problems stem from restricted access for maintenance, cable congestion, rerouting or monitoring
                                   capabilities. And each problem is a high-maintenance proposition characterized by longer service

                                   Flexibility demands DSX
                                   Change is inevitable. In today’s dynamic, evolving networks, it isn’t a matter of if things will change—it’s
                                   a matter of how much. Today’s communications networks demand a migration platform equipped
                                   with the cable management and physical rearrangement flexibility to accommodate new services and
                                   network elements. Today’s networks demand the flexibility of DSX.

                                   Unlike a direct connect solution, where network elements are directly connected to one another in a
                                   dedicated, pre-assigned method, a DSX solution serves as the demarcation point. This limits faults to
                                   individual circuits only, allowing changes to be performed with minimal recabling and labor costs.
                                   Direct connection forces operators to locate cables and then pull them to new locations, resulting in an
                                   extensive, intrusive reengineering process that demands a great deal of time and money recabling each
                                   network element. In contrast, a DSX allows operators to simply remove and replace a small wire on its
                                   crossconnect field to reroute circuits. This quick resolution is critical for maintaining service even during
                                   massive redesigns.
                                   Easier reconfiguration allows operators to manage the subsequent traffic flow when access to the
                                   physical network layer is required. Technicians can simply patch into the corresponding circuits with a
                                   patch cord for reconfiguration or monitoring purposes.


                                   Central termination point
                                   During network element rearrangements, a DSX can manage all rerouting, terminating, and
                                   maintenance functions from a centralized location. Without this centralized termination point, as in
                                   direct connection, cables must be pulled from each network element and subsequently rerouted to new
                                   destinations. This method of hardwiring jeopardizes reliability and often results in interrupted service
                                   because damage isn’t limited to individual circuits but effects can quickly spread to all circuits within a
                                   shared component like a common electronic backplane. For instance, a dropped wrench could knock
                                   out an entire network element, inducing havoc throughout the network.
                                   DSX and cross-connect systems allow operators to do all maintenance and rerouting from one location.
                                   These robust devices protect other, more delicate equipment from inadvertent damage during the circuit
                                   rearrangement process. And with easy circuit identification centralized, wiring on network elements’
                                   backplanes remains undisturbed and unharmed.


                                   Circuit access
                                   A network’s success often depends on how quickly it adapts to change and the simplicity of its

                                   maintenance capabilities. Networks require physical access points on every circuit for monitoring,
                                   patching, and testing purposes. The ability to tap into and read the signal on any circuit—and not
                                   interrupt service to customers— is invaluable in today’s market. By incorporating jacks, DSX is the only
                                   solution that can localize a fault by allowing operators complete access to any circuit, anytime.
                                   Passing a signal through a jack creates a “window” into the circuit. Through this window the signal
                                   can be monitored or pulled out, or a new signal can be introduced, by placing a temporary patch cord
                                   into the corresponding ports. By inserting one end of the patch cord into a monitor port on the DSX,
                                   and the other end into a test unit or other device, operators can monitor a signal without interrupting

                                   service.

                                   When intrusive testing is required, operators simply plug the patch cord into the IN/OUT port on the
                                   cross-connect field of the DSX. The signal flow to the cross-connect field is interrupted and a new
                                   connection between the jack and patch can be made. The signal can then be sent to a testing device to
                                   check for transmission errors or to another network element to temporarily reroute the signal.
                                   The integration of a DSX into the network allows operators to patch around faulty circuits quickly and
                                   easily. And operators are given time to restore the primary circuit without fear of service outages for
                                   customers.

                                   Passing the test of time
                                   Networks evolve over time as technology changes and advanced services are adopted. Equipment
                                   obsolescence and the necessary incorporation of new technologies present carriers with ongoing
                                   challenges. When the customers and the market are ready, the carrier must move quickly or risk missing
                                   revenue opportunity. A DSX crossconnect point allows deferment of property/plant and equipment
                                   expenses and allows upgrades to new technologies with the least disruption to current services. A

                                   physical plant with optimal cable management capabilities encourages quick reconfigurations, upgrades,

                                   the mobile operator the opportunity to address any problems in the best way and best time, often
                                   before anything as serious as a service outage happens – which, of course, has a direct effect on both
                                   customer satisfaction and revenue.
                                   The vital factor in this process is the quality of the modules employed. Only products that fulfill present
                                   requirements and anticipate future ones can ensure the reliability of the network and minimize the
                                   effect of changes and tests on the network.


                                   VAMs from ADC improve the reliability of a network and ensure profitable

                                   Value-Added Modules from ADC fulfill precisely these requirements. Available in a wide range of
                                   designs, they can be used as a monitoring module at any optical connection point and can monitor
                                   various interfaces. They can be employed at handoff points or backhaul network access and transition
                                   points, at network operation demarcation points, and for protocol analysis. The decisive factors for the
                                   modules’ configuration and placement are the information requirements of the technical department
                                   in question. This may be signal or protocol monitoring, or temporary connection of test equipment
                                   for fault localization and repair. For this purpose, to avoid damaging the overall performance of
                                   the network, five or ten percent of the actual optical power is used as a test signal to provide early
                                   indication of link degradation. Depending on the purpose of the monitoring on the sub-system, an

                                   A fiber optic network is, by its very nature, a closed system. Typically, the first sign for an existing
                                   problem is a signal that fails to reach its destination, or arrives corrupted or attenuated. Without test
                                   access points in the network, technicians must undertake time-consuming searches for faults. The
                                   network may be taken out of service to search for the fault. Once the source of the problem is found,
                                   the section of the network in which the trouble has been localized is taken out of service still longer, the
                                   fault corrected, and action taken to prevent future problems. The process can be greatly improved and
                                   simplified through the use of optical monitoring devices such as value-added modules.


                                   MiniDSX Multi Function Product Family
                                   The MiniDSX Multi Function products are used in environments where multiple transmission rates
                                   and media need to be connected. This includes: voice circuits, alarm connections, DSX1, DSX3, Cat 5e,
                                   Cat 6, Cat 6a, and fiber termination with or without splicing.
                                   The flexibility to connect various types of media in one panel simplifies equipment connections
                                   and provides a convenient test access point as well as a convenient location for rearranging and
                                   restoring circuits.

                                   DSX Module

                                   Using DSX-1 and DSX-3 modules to inter-connect or cross-connect various network elements is an
                                   efficient way of organizing the digital telecommunications equipment. There are three basic areas
                                   in a DSX: the wire termination area for terminating the signal (wire) from a network element; the
                                   cross-connect area, used to connect the two DSXs that have terminated the signals from two digital
                                   network elements; and finally, the heart of the DSX, the jack.

                                   Each DSX jack provides an OUT, IN and MONITOR signal access point. The OUT and IN switching
                                   jacks provide direct access to the network element’s input and output signals. These jacks provide

                                   a connection between DSX panels or positions that are cross-connected allow access to the signals
                                   for test and patching operations. A MONITOR jack with high impedance bridge networking is
                                   connected to the OUT jack for non-intrusive access to the output signal of each network element.

                                   The fiber modules provide a variety of fiber connectivity including termination, termination/splicing and
                                   optic splitting in small compact low-profile modules. These products are designed specifically to act
                                   as part of the fiber distribution system in a small fiber count location or as a demarcation point for the
                                   service at a particular location.

                                   The modules are available in the Front and Rear configuration or in an All Front access configuration.

                                   These RJ45 (8P8C) plug to RJ45 plug patch cords
                                   use ADC Category 5e cable and exceed the
                                   requirements for Category 5e.
                                   Before ordering patch cords, check the transmit
                                   and receive orientation of the hub and network
                                   interface card. Some manufacturers require
                                   a crossover of transmit and receive pairs; others
                                   have either the hub port or NIC card reversed
                                   in advance. Some can switch between the two.

                                   connectors and adapters. The performance of an
