									              QUESTIONS
• Need to ADD some type of Introduction
• Add course instructions
• Once I have some of the above, we’ll add
some type of course teezer to open the
  program with.
• Do you have any photo’s we could use
that would be appropriate for this course?

                                               1

Aufricht Retractor

                Aufricht retractors
                are used to retract
                skin from the nasal
                bones during
                septoplasties or
                septorhinoplasty.

                                      4
Army-Navy Retractor

                Army-Navy
                retractors are
                used to retract
                large areas of
                tissue during
                surgery.

                                  5
Cottle Double Ball Hook

                  Mainly used during
                  an open
                  septorhinoplasty
                  for retraction when
                  the surgeon does
                  not want to
                  penetrate the skin.

Desmarres Lid Retractor

                  Desmarres Lid
                  Retractors are
                  used to retract the
                  lower lid during
                  Blepharoplasty
                  surgery

                                        7

Two Prong Skin Hook

               Two prong skin
               hooks are used to
               retract skin during
               surgery. The two
               prongs allow it to
               retract a larger
               surface.

                                     10
                    Surgical forceps

• In the surgical theatre, forceps can
be used to handle tissues or
needles, or to grasp dressings in a
  sterile manner.
• Tissue forceps have small teeth
near their tips, so that tissue can be
  handled without applying excessive
  pressure.
• Smooth forceps are better for
  grasping suture material, as when
  removing sutures.
• Dressing forceps are larger, and
may appear more like "tongs" than
  forceps.

                forceps are used
                to grasp skin.
                Adson forceps are
                commonly used to
                hold skin during
                suturing process.

                are to be removed
                during the surgery.

                Also used as a skin
                retractor; providing
                that the skin will be
                removed as part of

              remove debris, such as
              cerumen, form the ear
              canal, or for placing a
              pressure equalization
              (PE) tube in the
              tympanic membrane
              during a myringotomy.

             used for grasping
             material to be used in
             the nasal area. The
             offset shape allows
             better visualization
             when used in small
             orifices. A common
             use is during nasal
             packing.

                specimen that is to be
                cauterized or removed.
                Also used for blunt
                dissection of tissue

                NOTE: dissection -
                The act of separating
                or dividing for the
                purpose of critical

            are also longer than
            other forceps’s allowing
            a surgeon to grip tissue
            deeper in the surgical
            site that other forceps
            cannot reach.
