                                                         Qianlong in Paris
Join us for a fascinating trip to Paris in the company of Professor Jenny So and Mr John Finlay The highlights of the
trip will be visits to the Musee Chinois of the Chateau de Fontainebleau, and the Guimet Museum.

Professor Jenny So an acclaimed expert on Chinese antiquities, is Professor of Fine Arts and Director of the Institute of
Chinese Studies, Chinese University. Professor So has taken the Friends on two successful tours to Sanxingdui and to Paris.

John Finlay is an independent researcher based in Paris. Previously he was the Curator of Chinese Art at the Norton
Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida, after serving as Assistant Curator of Asian Art at the Brooklyn Museum, New
York. He is currently writing a doctoral thesis for Yale University on the Qianlong-era imperial album “40 Views of the
Yuanming Yuan”.

Musee Chinois of the Chateau de Fontainebleau - In l860 defeated by the French Army, the Qing government ceded to
Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie the imperial treasures in the Yuanming Yuan. The imperial objects, on arrival in Paris,
were initially displayed in the Tuileries Palace but the display caused such a scandal that they were promptly whisked away
to the Chateau de Fontainebleau where they languished, until they caught the notice of the present French Government. A
decision was taken to re-install the pieces in two large renovated rooms in the Chateau. The pieces, comprising cloisonné,
jades, gold, lacquer, and textiles are now displayed in their original splendour in a belle-epoque chinoisserie setting in a
magnificent suite of rooms in the Chateau, the Musee Chinois.

Chateau de Fontainebleau is a UNESCO heritage site, primarily famous for its great French art and architecture, alongside
Emperor Qianlong’s treasures. There will be opportunity to tour the grounds and the royal apartments during the one day
excursion.

Professor So has received permission for the Friends to visit Musee Guimet on a Tuesday when the Museum is closed to
the public. We will view Qianlong paintings and Qianlong porcelains, not on public display. To be able to view objects in
storage in any museum is a treat, and when the museum is the Guimet it becomes a unique privilege.

Musee Cernuschi,, another Paris museum famous for its collection of Chinese antiquities, has also extended an invitation to
the Friends to visit the museum. Although not much relates to the Qianlong era, most of the collections are from the
Shang to the Tang dynasties and they are of the finest quality.

In contrast, visits will be made to the Musee du quai Branly - an outstanding museum and a bold departure from the
traditional white cube presentation - a refreshing experience for museum goers. In addition there will be a visit to Centre
Pompidou - familiar to Friends after the recent exhibition of Master pieces from the museum at our own Museum.

Join us on the exciting tour 30 June to 4 July
