                               Ingenix Conference and ICD-10 Changes
Debbie and Hilary recently attended the Ingenix Essentials Conference in Las Vegas,
which centered on the extensive 2008 code updates. Just to give you a taste of what
we all will face regarding these changes, here is a short overview:

                               • CPT: 244 new codes added (102 in Category II), 50 codes deleted (22 in the
Surgery section), and 314 codes revised (127 in the Surgery section).
                               • HCPCS: 190 new codes and many new modifiers (mostly for reporting purposes
                                    for CMS's PQRI program).
                               • ICD-9: 142 new codes and hundreds of changes to instructional notes, includes,
Debbie Smith excludes, revisions to existing code descriptions, and index changes and
additions. Many of the new ICD-9 codes are in Audiology/Speech.
With this many changes, new books are an obvious must for 2008.
ICD-10 was a hot topic at the conference. We got a glimpse of some ICD-10
codes, and they are going to be much more specific than ICD-9. The codes will
identify right or left, specific sites, regions, and much more. ICD-10 there will be
120,000 codes with full descriptions, almost nine times the current number of
ICD-9 codes. With this level of specificity, the physician or provider documentation
needs to reach a whole new level. But don’t panic yet! ICD-10 is not likely to go
into effect earlier than 2011, and HHS has agreed to give us a two-year notice prior
to implementation. However, I encourage you to be proactive and start preparing
now by identifying what your practice needs to do to implement ICD-10, including
possible software upgrades or new software purchases.
