                       Local Info & History
Local Info:
Hilton Head Island is located 95 miles south of historic Charleston on the coast of
South Carolina. The first inhabitants of the Island and surrounding areas were
Native Americans, who had been established on the Carolina Coast for
centuries. In the mid 1600's French and English Settlers began to establish
settlements around Hilton Head Island. In 1776, only 25 families lived on the
Island that is now known as Hilton Head. It wasn't, however, until 1951 that
electricity was brought to Hilton Head. In 1960 the first telephone was introduced
to the island. With technology making Hilton Head more easily accessible and
convenient for travel, the population grew from 2,500 in 1970 to 39,000 by 2006!
Hilton Head Island, SC is continually growing in popularity for vacationers from all
over. An estimated 2,000,000 people visited Hilton Head Island, SC duri ng the
2007 year, and more are expected in 2008. Hilton Head boasts twelve miles of
wide, sandy beaches, 20 public golf courses, and 300 tennis courts. Among
golfing and tennis, visitors come to Hilton Head to fish, bicycle, shop, and enjoy
the decadent coastal southern cuisine.

The history of Hilton Head Island is long and rich, beginning over 10,000 years
ago with Native Americans taking advantage of the bountiful waters and fertile
soil of the coastal islands. Written history begins in the early 1500s as Spaniards
landed on the island while exploring the Florida coast. It wasn't until 1663, when
the England's King Charles II granted the land to several Lords that it became
known as Carolina.

The Revolutionary War brought destruction to Hilton Head Island, but a
prosperous growth after the war contributed to South Carolina's reputation as
one of the wealthiest states by the time the Civil War arrived in April of 1861. By
November of that same year the Yankees had taken control of the island a nd
freed thousands of slaves. As the war ended and troops went home, the freed
slaves were the only inhabitants of the island and the traditions and customs of
the rich Gullah culture we see today were born.

In 1956, developer Charles Fraser bought up much of Hilton Head and created
Sea Pines Plantation, the first planned community. His ideas for eco-friendly
building are still utilized today and have made Hilton Head Island an inspiration
for many other communities. The majority of the island's residents live in gated
neighborhoods, or plantations. Although most dining, shopping, and beaches are
located outside of the plantations, access passes are available for those who
wish to visit the private golf and racquet clubs.

Considering the vast history of the island and surrounding areas, things have
certainly changed in the past few centuries. Thankfully, the natives and local
residents of the area continually strive to preserve and celebrate the history and
culture of Hilton Head Island.

                        Eagle's Pointe Golf Club
Eagle's Point Golf Club is just outside of Hilton Head, SC in nearby Bluffton, SC.
This premier course has become one of the most loved of Davis Love's courses
in South Carolina. Whether you are a novice, or seasoned golfer, most everyone
who has hit the greens knows something about David Love III. He was the 1997
PGA Champion as well as a four-time Heritage Champion. Among his
accomplishments is the design of this South Carolina Golf Course. Eagle's Point
is clearly a Love course with wide, balanced fairways, meticulously manicured
greens, and precise bunkering. Each of the magnificent and challenging holes
are surrounded by a serene southern setting that will make you want to play a
little slower.

The course is a par 71, where golfers can choose to tee off at the blue tees,
playing 6,358 yards, or 6,738 yards from the "Love III" championship tees. To
have the honor of calling a course a true "Davis Love Course", the greens can't
be the only thing extraordinary. At Eagle's Point Golf Club, the service matches
the high expectations set for the greens. The staff at Eagle's Point pride
themselves in the reputation they have earned in South Carolina, as one of the
finest courses to play in the area. Call 24 hours a day, or visit to book your tee times online.

                         Golden Bear Golf Club
Since the time the course opened in 1992, the Golden Bear Golf Club at Indigo
Run has become an essential course for Hilton Head golf fans. The course is
owned by ClubCorp, and has rapidly gained a reputation as one of the island's
most challenging and enjoyable tests of golfing skill. Designed by golf-legend
Jack Nicklaus, this course is well known for its wide variety of shot-making
requirements as well as its Lowcountry splendor. Though not brutal, water holes
and sand traps are an ever-present factor in negotiating the course's beautiful
oak and pine tree corridors.

Setting itself apart from other South Carolina golf courses, Golden Bear clearly
demands skill more than strength, finesse more than power, strategy more than
heroics. As an added bonus, The Golden Bear is the only course on the island to
offer a state-of-the-art ParView GPS Electronic Caddy system on every cart. With
many technological features, this system assists the golfer with full-color
features, such as overviews of each hole, pro tips on how to best play the hole,
current pin placement, live scoring for groups and more! For a novice golfer that
needs the aid, or for a pro golfer that needs the challenge, Golden Bear Golf
Club at Indigo Run offers an ideal setting for a day of golf.

stimulating course that will provide an adequate challenge for all golfers. The

Hilton Head Island, SC is home to breathtaking stretches of sandy beach that
gently slope towards the Atlantic Ocean. Even during high tide, most of the
beaches retain a wide sandy area. In 1997, the Beach Renourishment Project
made a well-rewarded effort to renew the natural state of the beaches. The result
is some of the most beautiful beaches on the Atlantic Coast. With a mildly
temperate climate, Hilton Head Beaches are perfect to visit year round. The
water temperature of the Atlantic around Hilton Head Island drops to a low of 52
degrees Fahrenheit in January but warms up to 84 degrees in July and August.

Whether you want to relax and soak up the sun or dive in to the Atlantic's gentle
surf, the Hilton Head beaches are so inviting you may never want to leave. Some
beaches have play areas for children and others have volleyball nets set up for
the adults and bigger kids. You can also rent bicycles, beach buggies, and chairs
from several different vendors all about the island.

Hilton Head has many canine-friendly beaches and can be the perfect place to
spend the day playing with your furry friends. The area beaches do implement
some regulations as to when and where dogs are permitted, and at certain times
they must be on their leashes. No dogs are permitted on any local beach during
Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekend . Seasonal rules also apply to other
beach activities, including the use of personal watercraft, sailing, fishing, and kite
flying. Check with the Hilton Head Area Chamber of Commerce or area Visitors
Bureau to stay up to date with the current regulations.

Beach. Many of the island's hotels, resorts, and plantations have private beach
access points, but anyone can visit those beaches via neighboring beach areas.

parking. Most parking meters cost twenty-five cents per fifteen minutes and some
private lots offer parking for variable rates depending on the day of the week and
the season. Islander Beach Park, located at the end of Folly Field Rd has an
access point designated strictly to Hilton Head residents, and all vehicles parked
here must display an authorized bumper sticker. Parking codes are strictly
enforced and carry a $25.00 fine for illegal parking. Check with the local visitor's
bureau for specific parking regulations.

Although Hilton Head Island offers the best beaches for kids, accidents will
occasionally happen. The most common injuries occur from encountering sea life
such as stingrays or beached jellyfish. You can contact the beach and surf patrol,
a lifeguard, or area first aid facility for assistance at any time, as they are
available to keep Hilton Head's beaches safe. If you are planning a day at the
beach with children, or are spending the day by yourself, it is wise to choose one
of the many beaches with lifeguards and/or beach and surf patrol on duty.

                                Burke's Beach
Burke's Beach is little more than just an access spot off of William Hilton
parkway. Although there is a very limited amount of public parking, this is the
perfect place to stop if you are cruising around the island on a bike, looking for a
quite place to rest. The section of beach at this access point is relatively quiet
and is also a great place to play fetch with your dog, frisbee with your friends, or
collect seashells with your kids.

Be sure to check with the Hilton Head Area Chamber of Commerce, or Area
Tourism board to ensure you are up to date with the current seasonal restrictions
on pets, kite flying, fishing, and personal watercraft. There are no restrooms or
concessions and no lifeguards, so come prepared and be cautious of the tide
and weather when entering the water.

                             Alder Lane Beach
Alder Lane Beach is one of the quieter beach locations on Hilton Head Island.
Even considering that Alder Lane Beach neighbors the Mariott Grand Ocean
Resort, it is generally not crowded, even in the busiest months. The beach is one
of the wider ones on the island, so bringing along a wagon isn't a bad idea.
Public parking is available for $1.00/hr, in quarters. This public access beach is
equipped with mats to make it wheelchair accessible. Restrooms and a drink
machine are also provided. Life guards are on hand during the swimming
season. The Alder Lane access is the southern most access and is located off of
South Forest Beach Drive at Alder Ln.

                               Coligny Beach
Coligny Beach is probably Hilton Head's most popular beach. Both the beachside
bar at the Holiday Inn, and the volleyball nets on the beach, draw a large crowd.
This hotspot on Hilton Head Island is the perfect place to spend the day
swimming, lounging, biking, or just soaking up the sun. Vacationers visiting this
beach spend hours watching intense beach volleyball matches, mostly because it
is much easier than playing in ninety-degree weather!

Restrooms, changing rooms, showers, and water fountains are also furnished to
make the day much more enjoyable, especially if you plan on building sand
castles all day with the kids! Both metered parking and a public parking lot are
nearby and mats are available to make the beach wheelchair accessible.
Lifeguards are on duty during swimming months, and are a hub for renting your
beach necessities such as beach bikes, umbrellas, and sand trikes.

                           Driessen Beach Park
Driessen Beach Park, also referred to as Singleton Beach, is one of Hilton
Head's greatest beaches to spend the day with the kids. Picnic areas with
benches and a grill are furnished in designated areas, and have a neighboring
playground. The beach is wheelchair accessible, and a great place to bring a
wagon full of sand toys. There is a long boardwalk that leads to the beach, so be
prepared to haul you beach goodies down to the shoreline.

The beach provides restrooms, showers, shelters, and vending machines,
making your experience more convenient as well as providing some brief refuge
from the sun. There is ample pay-per-spot parking, and a little cheaper than the
other beaches at fifty cents per hour. Lifeguards are on duty during swimming
season. Driessen Beach Park is located mid-island, off of William Hilton
Parkway, at Bradley Beach Road.

                           Fish Haul Creek Park
Fish Haul Creek Park is located on the sound rather than the ocean, but there is
a sandy shore that makes this Hilton Head hotspot considerably more private
than the other beaches. There are no lifeguards on duty at this beach, which
lends to the comfortable, uncrowdedness of the park. If you plan on swimming,
make sure to check the tide report and local weather before heading out. If you
just want to relax and escape the inland heat, the park offers alternate activities
that you won't find in ordinary public beach areas.

The thirty-one acres of Fish Haul Creek Park is home to local vegetatio n as well
as wildlife, much of which can be seen from the park's observation deck, which
overlooks the nearby marshes. The park boasts several trails connecting this
prime location to the neighboring Port Royal Sound. The park also offers the
convenience of restrooms and a pavilion with picnic tables. A public parking lot is
also available, accessed from Beach City Road.
