AWARDS AND HONORS
Dr. Waddah Al-Refaie has been elected to membership in the Society of University Surgeons
(SUS).



IN THE NEWS

Readers of the St. Cloud Times (28,000) were treated to the front page story of fiancés matched
on eHarmony who also turned out to be a kidney match when the man needed a transplant. Their
transplant took place February 15, at University of Minnesota Medical Center. Arthur Matas, MD,
director of the renal transplant program, was interviewed for the story.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS:

                The Minnesota Futures Grant Program in the Office of the Vice President
for Research (OVPR) promotes research and scholarship by fostering opportunities for researchers to
  cross disciplinary and professional boundaries. The program is designed to advance more in-depth
    work to convert ideas into viable research questions. Proposals may be for up to two years for a
maximum of $250,000 each. The program anticipates awarding two grants. For more information,
        including application deadlines and key program dates, see OVPR website.

 RECOGNITION PROGRAM

          Two Employee Recognition Awards will be given out each month—one for staff and one
 for faculty, fellows, and residents. All Department of Surgery employees can nominate another
