The county’s unemployment rate was listed at 7.8 percent in December, while the November and October percentage came in at 7.5, according to figures released today by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The 7.5 percent jobless rate in the county was its lowest figure since December 2008, when 6.8 percent of workers were unemployed. Medina County experienced a high of 10-percent unemployment in February 2010, according to state data. Of the state’s 88 counties, 44 counties had unemployment rates go up in December, the job report states. Ohio counties with the lowest rate are Delaware and Holmes — 6.4 percent, while the highest unemployment rate was 16.3 percent in Ottawa County. Eight counties in Ohio had jobless rates under 8 percent for December, according to the job report. Counties below the 8-percent mark were Mercer, 6.6 percent; Union, 7.4; Franklin, 7.6; Geauga, 7.7; Medina, 7.8; Fairfield, 7.9; and Delaware and Holmes counties with 6.4. Nine counties had unemployment higher than 13 percent last month. They were Ottawa, 16.3 percent; Clinton, 15; Pike, 14.8; Highland, 14; Noble, 13.8; Adams, Meigs and Morgan, 13.7; and Huron, 13.5. The job and family services department noted on Friday that Ohio’s jobless rate slipped from 9.8 percent in November of last year to 9.6 percent in December. The national unemployment rate in December 2010 was 9.4 percent, which was down from 9.8 percent in November. The Associated Press contributed information to this report.
