Calibration of a British Pendulum Portable Skid Tester

1.0             SCOPE

                 This procedure is for the calibration of a British Pendulum Portable Skid Resistance
                 Tester.

                 For calibration intervals, refer to Procedure CP001.

3.0             DEFINITIONS

                 As detailed in the references.


4.0             APPARATUS AND MATERIALS

4.1              Apparatus

                         Test tiles.
                         Bench test base board.
                         British Pendulum Testers 149/001 & 149/002 and associated equipment.
                         Thermometer, with a range 00C to 500C and graduated to 0.10C.
                         Pavement (TRRL) and Footpath (4S) sliders.

4.2              Materials

                         Clean water


5.0              PRECALIBRATION PREPARATION

                 Prior to an operator or a full calibration, the device is to be checked for serviceability.

6.0             PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLOWED

6.1              Full Calibration

                 The devices are to be fully calibrated by an appropriate accredited authority. The
                 calibration is to be undertaken every two years.

6.2              Operator Calibration

                 The devices are to be checked by laboratory staff for consistency of operation and this
                 is to be done every six months. This work will be undertaken using both British
                 Pendulum Testers with the supplied tiles to determine comparative results. There are
                 two types of sliders used for this test, the TRRL and 4S, both are required to be tested
                 in the two pendulum testers.

6.2.1            The Tile Test

                             Select either 4S or TRRL slider and mount it on the pendulum tester.

                             Set up the base board in a convenient location and fix the standard tile in
                              position ensuring the pendulum swings the same direction as the arrow
                              marked on the tile.

                             The work is to follow the test procedure TP345 and the results are to be
                              reported at the standard temperature of 200C.

                             Set up the apparatus as detailed and determine the value for the standard
                              tile. The result shall be the average of the five individual test swings. The
                              test shall be repeated to gain two sets of results.

                             Repeat process with the same slider but with the second pendulum tester.

                             Once completed change to the other slider and repeat testing procedure.

                             The resultant readings should be within two units of the other test
                              apparatus.

                             Test and record the temperature of the water lying on the test area
                              immediately after the test.

                             If the results are outside these requirements, adjust the test device to
                              correct this anomaly. Repeat testing and if these results continue to not be
                              achievable, then the pendulum tester that is out of calibration should be
                              sent for full calibration.

7.0        CALCULATIONS

           Refer to TP345.

           Note: There is a possibility that differences between sliders of different dates will exist.
           This is primarily due to changes in the manufacturing process for batches of sliders, eg.
           different emulsions used in different batches etc. To improve performance of the slider
           remove the fine film on the surface of the slider with a fine grade sanding paper. Also
           condition a new slider by creating a striking edge before any form of testing.


8.0        PRECISION

           The uncertainty of measurement has been determined as + 5.0% of the test result, at a
           confidence limit of 95% with a nominal coverage factor of 2, when calculated in
           accordance with accreditation requirements as detailed in AS/ISO 17025.
