                              Pocklington School Rewards and Sanctions Policy


AIMS AND VALUES

At Pocklington, our aim is to Inspire for Life:

The school‟s policy on rewarding the children for their day-to-day work and behaviour, and sanctioning them for what
are considered to be unsatisfactory actions, is very much rooted in our aims and values to Inspire For Life, utilising the
concepts of praise and the positive acknowledgement of achievement.

Pocklington School‟s policy on rewards and sanctions aims:

   to give value and encouragement to academic achievement and the effort to improve at all levels of ability
   to encourage, reinforce and acknowledge the positive attitudes of respect and consideration for others and respect
    for self
   to be fair and consistent

                                                    REWARDS

In addition to the staff encouraging the pupils through verbal praise or by positive comment on their work, the school
provides a number of actual forms of reward as given below:

1.     Merit Stickers

       General Administration
       There are Lower School, Middle School and Sixth Form stickers. These are awarded by staff for the
       completion of significantly good pieces of work (with respect to the ability of that pupil) and especially for
       significant improvement. The stickers are simply attached directly to the piece of work and signed and dated
       by the member of staff.

       Recording
       Merit stickers carry points which contribute toward the Lower School, Middle School and Sixth Form House
       Cups for work. In the Lower School and Middle School if a pupil earns a significant number of merits over a
       half term or term the Housemaster/mistress will write to the parents acknowledging the achievement. In the
       Lower and Middle Schools, the number of merits obtained is recorded in the pupil‟s termly reports. Pupils
       show the sticker and work to their house tutor who can then add praise.

       In the Lower and Middle Schools and Sixth Form, house tutors keep records of the number of merits and pass
       these on to the Housemaster/mistress.

2.     Distinction Cards

       General
       Distinction cards are awarded for achievement of the highest quality. They are intended primarily to recognise
       academic work of unusual perception, excellence or originality, but are also applicable to an action, for
       example one of remarkable initiative, helpfulness or goodwill.

       Administration
       a. Issue. Cards may be issued by any teacher.

       b.   Completion. A brief description of the basis for the award is given, followed by the teacher‟s signature
            and date.

       c.   Procedure. The card is handed to the pupil who should show it to their Housemaster/ mistress and see
            the Headmaster for signature. The pupil retains the card after it has been signed.

       d.   Recording. The Housemaster/mistress writes a file note recording the award. This is copied to the Head
            of Division and tutor. The tutor must ensure that the award is noted in the pupil‟s end of term school
            report. The Headmaster records the award in the “Distinctions Ledger”.

       e.   Monitoring. Housemaster/mistress to monitor trends (e.g. boy/girl or individuals, and liaise with the Head
            of Division).

3.     Headmaster’s Commendation

       In all years, 1st Year to Sixth Form, certificates are presented during the end of term assembly. A small
       number of Commendations will be awarded to pupils after the overall achievement and improvement of the
       pupil‟s work have been carefully considered by their house tutors and Housemaster/mistress. Guideline criteria
       for the award are followed within each division. The Housemaster/mistress and Head of Division will monitor
       trends (e.g. boy/girl or individuals).

4.     Prizes
       Cash prizes or book tokens are awarded by to the top scoring and most improved pupils following internal
       examinations. Successful pupils receive their prizes during the end of term assemblies. The awards are
       monitored by the Assistant Head (Academic), looking for individual trends. Departmental prizes to individual
       pupils are awarded during Prize-giving in the summer term.

                                                    SANCTIONS

No corporal punishment will be used under any circumstances (Section 131 of the Schools Standards
and Framework Act 1998)

Minor penalties (i.e. statements, unsatisfactory work stickers and the sanction in respect of school uniform) are not
applied to Sixth Formers for whom disciplinary matters are reported to the relevant Sixth Form house tutor or
Housemaster/mistress.

The following sanctions may be implemented by the staff:

1.      Statements

        These are a list of facts which are required to be copied by pupils and are regarded as a „one-off‟ sanction for
        minor misdemeanours. Staff may use their judgement as to the nature of the misdemeanour and the number
        of statements asked for.

        Procedure
        Staff should:
         give a maximum of 20 statements
         give pupils 48 hours to complete them.
         check that they have been completed to a high standard of presentation and accuracy

        Statements must be signed by the pupils‟ Housemaster/mistress. Pupils must return the completed statements
        sheet directly to the issuing member of staff. Other colleagues must not accept completed statements on
        others behalf. Issuing staff may then have a concluding and encouraging discussion with the pupil.

        Pupils who fail to complete statements will be required to do so during a lunch hour and sent for late lunch.

        Prefects
        Prefects may use their judgement to refer a pupil to the pupil‟s Housemaster/mistress for 10 statements.
        Prefects use their referral stubs to record the incident, direct the pupil and notify the relevant
        Housemaster/mistress. House staff must liaise with the prefect to ensure satisfactory closure of the incident
        with the pupil.

        The number of statements given to pupils by both staff and prefects is monitored by the
        Housemaster/mistress who will look for trends and report to parents and record in the pupils‟ termly reports as
        appropriate.

2.      School Uniform

        Any pupil who is flouting the school dress code (see sections 17, 18 and 19 of the School Calendar) will be
        challenged by staff and required to write out section 17. The work should then be signed and recorded by the
        Housemaster/mistress before the pupil takes it to the original member of staff. Repeated instances will result
        in a school detention and contact with home.

3.      Detentions

a.      Staff Detention
        Staff may set and supervise their own detentions for pupils‟ failure to complete any work or statements, or for
        misbehaviour. These will take place during break or lunchtimes, not after school. Such detentions take
        precedence over other commitments and pupils should inform staff whose activity they miss of the reason for
        their non-attendance. Staff must inform their Head of Department (HoD) and the pupil‟s
        Housemaster/mistress who will make a file note and speak with the pupil.

b.       Removal from a Lesson and Lunch Time Detentions
         If a pupil‟s behaviour or demeanour is deemed to be disrupting a lesson and affecting the learning of others,
         then they will be told to leave the lesson. In the first instance the member of staff could give the pupil a clear
         warning that their continued disruptive behaviour will lead to them being removed from the lesson.

         The member of staff may then remove the pupil from the lesson for a short period in order to diffuse a
         situation (e.g. 1-2 minutes only), standing the pupil outside the room where they may be easily monitored.
         The member of staff may then return the pupil to the lesson and should speak to the pupil as soon as possible
         to resolve the matter. The follow up procedure below is then followed.

         The pupil may also be removed permanently from the lesson, when the pupil is sent, with work if
         appropriate, to the Head of Department (HoD), who will then take action as they feel appropriate. HoDs may
         contact the Headmaster‟s PA for assistance if necessary, who will then request a member of the FMG to attend
         the department (see Appendix 2). (Guidelines on what can be considered as disruptive behaviour can be
         found in Appendix 1.)

         Follow up Procedure
        The member of staff whose lesson was disrupted must inform the relevant Head of Division (MN, CMWS or
         SM), their HoD, and the pupil‟s Housemaster/mistress.
        House staff must see the pupil, record the incident and make clear to the pupil that it is their responsibility
         to catch up with any work missed as a result of them being sent out. A record must also be kept by the HoD.
         The HoD and Housemaster/mistress should liaise to decide on an agreed form of action.
        HoD or House staff will contact the pupil‟s parents informing them of the unsatisfactory behaviour and the
         further consequences of repeated incidents.
        HoD liaises with the member of staff to offer support and involvement.
        Feedback must also occur to the originating member of staff via Housemaster/mistress.

         Repeat Offences
        If a pupil is removed from a second lesson within a half-term, the Housemaster/mistress in liaison with the
         Head of Division will inform the pupil that they will serve a Lunch Time Detention on the next available day
         (Monday to Friday). Lunch Time Detentions will start at 1.00pm. They will take priority over any activities.
         Pupils will be able to have a late lunch but will then return for the remainder of the lunch. The
         Housemaster/mistress will liaise with the subject teacher to set work for the detention. Supervision of the
         Lunch Time Detention can be undertaken by a senior member of staff (HOD, Head of Division or
         Housemaster/mistress).
        If a pupil has two Lunch Time Detentions during a term, (removed from 4 lessons) the matter will be referred
         to the Assistant Head (Academic or Pastoral) who may then impose a range of sanctions including suspension.
         Liaison will occur with relevant HoDs.
        Monitoring of any trends will occur via the HoD liaising with the Housemaster/ mistress and Head of Division as
         appropriate. HoDs will report their findings to the Pocklington School Management Group at the first meeting
         of each term.

c.       School Detention
         School Detentions can be given by any member of staff for a misdemeanour of particular concern, such as
         persistent misbehaviour, unsatisfactory work or the disobeying of school rules. It may be for a single incident
         or for an accumulation of incidents.
         The Detention is held after school on Friday and supervised by the Assistant Head (Pastoral), the Head of Sixth
         Form, Middle School or Lower School on a rota basis. Parents are informed before the event by a slip which
         they sign and return to the appropriate Head of Division who will maintain and monitor records, liaising
         with the Housemaster/mistress. Pupils may be placed in a School Detention for repeated misdemeanours or a
         single incident.

d.       Head of Division Detention
         This Detention will be taken by the relevant Head of Division at their discretion and arrangement. This is
         regarded as a more serious detention resulting from a culmination of incidents or a single more serious
         misdemeanour by a pupil. The Head of Division will maintain and monitor records, liaising with the
         Housemaster/mistress, and contact with parents will occur. This Detention may also be taken by the Assistant
         Head (Pastoral).

4.   On Report

     The decision to put a pupil ‘On Report’ for a specific behavioural reason or for continued under-achievement
     will usually be taken after discussion. Pupils ‘On Report’ will have to show the report (lesson comments by
     subject teacher) to their house tutor or Housemaster/mistress and, on occasion, to the Head of Lower School,
     Middle School or Sixth Form.

5.   Boarders’ 'Gating'

     Boarders who do not abide by house rules may be gated. This involves being restricted to the house (apart
     from lessons, meals and other necessities) and the wearing of school uniform for the duration of the gating.
     The length of time for a gating depends on the seriousness of the offence and could vary from a single day to
     a whole week.

6.   Temporary (Suspension) or Permanent Exclusion from Boarding

     For boarding pupils, if numerous misdemeanours accumulate or if a single serious disciplinary incident occurs,
     a pupil may be excluded from the boarding house either temporarily (suspended from boarding) or
     permanently (excluded from boarding). For temporary exclusion from boarding, the school will consider
     whether the pupil may continue to attend school as a day pupil during the boarding suspension. For
     permanent exclusion from boarding, the pupil may only continue to attend school at all times henceforth as a
     day pupil. Both temporary and permanent exclusions from boarding are dealt with by the Assistant Head
     (Pastoral) in liaison with the Headmaster.

7.   Absence from School as a ‘Neutral’ Act

     It may on occasions be deemed appropriate for a pupil to be absent from school for a short period of time in
     order for the school, pupil or family concerned to come to terms with, allow time for reflection over, or for
     further investigations to occur into, a particular incident. This will be initiated by the Assistant Head (Pastoral)
     or Headmaster. This will be seen as a „neutral‟ act and will not appear on the pupil‟s record as a disciplinary
     measure. Work will be provided as appropriate to the pupil in order to continue education. Records will be
     held by the Assistant Head (Pastoral).

8.   Exclusion from School (Suspension or Expulsion)

     If numerous misdemeanours accumulate, or a single serious disciplinary incident occurs, a pupil may be
     excluded from school either temporarily (suspension) or permanently (expulsion). Temporary
     exclusions (suspensions) are dealt with by the Assistant Head (Pastoral). Permanent exclusions (expulsion)
     are dealt with by the Headmaster. Records will be held by the Assistant Head (Pastoral).

a.   Formal Warning
     If numerous misdemeanours accumulate or a single serious disciplinary incident occurs, a pupil may be placed
     on a Formal Warning. This will constitute a serious disciplinary situation for the pupil in which any further
     misdemeanours deemed significant (whether individually or together) by the school may lead to either a Final
     Warning or expulsion from the school. The particular details of the Formal Warning will be clearly given to the
     pupil and the parents, usually by the Headmaster but otherwise by the Deputy Headmaster or Assistant Head
     (Pastoral), as part of a disciplinary meeting, and confirmed in writing. The Formal Warning will be effective
     for a set period of time assigned at its outset. This will be for a maximum of three full school terms. At the
     expiry of this period, and subject to there having been no further misdemeanours, the Formal Warning will
     expire although it may remain noted in the pupil‟s record.

b.   Final Warning
     If numerous misdemeanours accumulate or a single serious disciplinary incident occurs, a pupil may be placed
     on a Final Warning. This may or may not (depending on the gravity of the incident and/or the risk to others in
     the school community) be preceded by a Formal Warning. This will constitute a serious disciplinary situation
     for the pupil in which any further misdemeanours deemed significant will lead to expulsion from the school.
     The particular details of the Final Warning will be clearly given to the pupil and the parents, usually by the
     Headmaster but otherwise by the Deputy Headmaster or Assistant Head (Pastoral), as part of a disciplinary
     meeting, and confirmed in writing. The Final Warning will be effective for a set period of time assigned at its

        outset. This will be for a maximum of three full school terms. At the expiry of this period and subject to there
        having been no further misdemeanours, the Final Warning will expire although it may remain noted in the
        pupil‟s record.

c.      Entry into the Sixth Form
        Transfer into the Sixth Form in the school following completion of GCSE examinations is dependent on both
        the required GCSE results and on an acceptable behavioural school record. If numerous misdemeanours
        accumulate or a single serious disciplinary incident occurs, then a pupil may not be accepted into the Sixth
        Form based on their behavioural record. These decisions are dealt with by the Assistant Head (Pastoral) in
        liaison with the Headmaster and other members of the Foundation Management Group. The school will
        communicate such decisions as early as is reasonably possible so that parents may consider alternatives.


Monitoring of Rewards and Sanctions
Heads of Division will monitor and analyse records of Rewards and Sanctions looking for trends, allowing liaison with
the Assistant Head (Pastoral), via the Pastoral Management Group, and the consideration of action points to occur.
Heads of Division will report their findings to the Pocklington School Management Group at the first meeting of each
term.

Anti-Bullying Procedures
Refer to the Anti-Bullying Policy For Appropriate Sanctions.
Careful and detailed discussion with the „bully‟ will occur to enable them to consider how their actions have offended
and hurt the victim, and how they can learn to behave in ways which will not cause harm in the future and how to
repair the harm they have caused. These discussions must involve liaison with the bully‟s parents or guardians. A
letter warning over future sanctions for continued incidents will be sent to parents.

Smoking, Alcohol Consumption and Dealing With Illegal and Legal Substances
For matters concerning pupil involvement with these substances, please refer to the separate policy „Policy on Pupil
Involvement with Smoking, Alcohol Consumption and Dealing with Illegal and Legal Substances‟.

Reporting to Parents
When appropriate, in cases of persistent misbehaviour or under-achievement, Housemaster/mistress may take the
decision to contact parents. Parents may be invited to come into the school to discuss the situation with the
Housemaster/mistress.

                             Pocklington School Rewards and Sanctions Policy


Pupils are responsible for ensuring their behaviour enables excellent learning and teaching for all.

The following is for staff use (as a guide only) to provide examples of pupil behaviour which will need to be challenged
and may result in the pupil being removed from the lesson as stated in the policy under Sanctions, Detentions para 2.


       Late arrival

       Arriving in a state not ready for learning

       Talking whilst others are talking; shouting out answers or over someone else

       Insensitive or inappropriate contributions or response to other pupils‟ contribution

       Any sort of discrimination:
        - Verbal/non-verbal
        - Race, religion, ethnic group
        - Sexual orientation, gender

       Inappropriate physical contact

       Demeaning behaviour – rudeness and disrespect to staff or other pupils; defiance, disobedience, rudeness,
        swearing or answering back

       Anything which impacts on the health and safety of the class

       Damaging school property, e.g. books, classrooms, furniture, or property of others

       Not responding promptly and courteously to instruction

       The pupil is not on task and not producing the work expectation (no good reasons)

       Eating or drinking in class – except for water where permission is granted by teacher

       No iPods/MP3s/mobile phones to be used in any taught lesson

       Chewing gum or whistling
