One More Thing

[STEVEN]

HEY HEY HEY - STEVEN FABIAN HERE READY TO START IT UP ON THIS
TUESDAY. IT'S THE 30TH OF NOVEMBER. COMING UP TODAY - WHAT'S THE
DEAL WITH ALL THOSE GOVERNMENT SECRETS THAT GOT OUT? WE'LL
LET YOU KNOW. PLUS A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TEEN IN ALASKA -
CHANNEL ONE NEWS STARTS RIGHT NOW.

[STEVEN]

ALRIGHT GUYS WE ARE KICKING TODAY OFF WITH ONE OF THE DAY'S TOP
STORIES. PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS A NEW PLAN FOR SAVING MONEY IN
WASHINGTON.

THE PRESIDENT HAS PROPOSED TO STOP GIVING RAISES OR PAY
INCREASES TO *CIVILIAN* FEDERAL WORKERS FOR THE NEXT TWO
YEARS-- A MOVE THAT COULD SAVE THE GOVERNMENT UP TO 2 BILLION
DOLLARS THIS FINANCIAL YEAR

THE NUMBER SOUNDS BIG BUT IT WON'T EVEN TAKE A ZERO OFF THE
GOVERNMENT'S 1.3 TRILLION DOLLAR ANNUAL DEFICIT - MEANING THE
GOVERNMENT WILL SPEND 1.3 TRILLION DOLLARS MORE THAN IT EARNS
THIS YEAR.

DESPITE THE SAVINGS, THE PRESIDENT SAID IT WAS A TOUGH DECISION
TO MAKE,

I did not come to this decision easily. This is not just a line item on a federal ledger.
These are people's lives."
CONGRESS IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE PROPOSAL, THOUGH MEMBERS
VOTED TO FREEZE THEIR OWN PAY AT 174-THOUSAND DOLLARS LAST
APRIL.

THE SALARY FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES HAS STOOD AT
4-HUNDRED THOUSAND SINCE 2001.

CONGRESS STILL HAS TO APPROVE THE FREEZE-- BUT IT IS ALREADY
SUPPORTED BY BOTH DEMOCRATS *AND* REPUBLICANS.

AND FROM GOVERNMENT SPENDING - TO WHAT YOU'RE SPENDING. THAT
BRINGS US TO THOSE "YOUR TURN" RESPONSES

[STEVEN]

YESTERDAY WE ASKED WILL YOU BE SPENDING MORE THIS HOLIDAY
SEASON?

63 PERCENT SAID NO, AND 37 PERCENT OF YOU SAID YES, YOU WILL
SPEND MORE THIS YEAR.

PHIL FROM OHIO LEFT US THIS MESSAGE.

I will not be spending more money this holiday season. even though the news is telling us
the economy is getting better I have yet to see that. I have not seen more money in my
wallet yet so everything seems the same to me.

BUT ANDRESSA FROM OHIO WROTE IN:

i think we are spending more because there are more sales going on.

THANKS GUYS FOR ALL OF YOUR COMMENTS. COMING UP NEXT -- JESSICA
KUMARI LOOKS AT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE GOVERNMENTS SECRETS
GET OUT.

[STEVEN]

THERE IS MORE TALK TODAY ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT SECRETS THAT
WERE LEAKED TO THE WEB SITE WIKILEAKS. JESSICA KUMARI TELLS US
WHAT'S BEING SAID - AND WHAT THE GOVERNMENT IS DOING TO TRY
AND STOP THE LEAK.

[JESSICA]
IMAGINE IF YOUR PRIVATE TEXT MESSAGES TO YOUR CLOSEST FRIENDS
GOT OUT THERE, AND NOW EVERYONE KNOWS YOUR PERSONAL
THOUGHTS.

THAT'S KIND OF LIKE WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE U-S GOVERNMENT
AFTER THE WEBSITE WIKILEAKS EXPOSED MORE THAN 250 THOUSAND
SECRET DOCUMENTS.

SOME THAT INCLUDE COMMENTS ABOUT LEADERS AROUND THE WORLD -
LIKE THIS ONE THAT DESCRIBED THE RUSSIAN PRESIDENT AS "AFRAID
AND HESITANT"

OR ANOTHER THAT SAID GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL WAS "
A LEADER WHO "AVOIDS RISKS AND IS RARELY CREATIVE."

AND AFGHAN PRESIDENT HAMID KARZAI IS DESCRIBED AS BEING
"DRIVEN BY PARANOIA."

OTHER DOCUMENTS CONTAIN INSTRUCTIONS TO AMERICAN DIPLOMATS
THAT SEEM LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENT TO CIA AGENTS
INSTEAD -- INSTRUCTIONS TO COLLECT THINGS LIKE CREDIT CARD
NUMBERS, EVEN, IN SOME CASES, DNA SAMPLES AND FINGERPRINTS.

AND LIKE ALL THE OTHER DOCUMENTS IN THIS MASSIVE LEAK, IT COULD
MAKE FOREIGN OFFICIALS MORE CAUTIOUS AND SUSPICIOUS IN DEALING
WITH AMERICAN DIPLOMATS.

SOT: HILLARY CLINTON / SEC. OF STATE MOND200

every country, including the U.S., must be able to have honest, private dialogue with
other countries about issues of common concern.

BUT IT'S NOT JUST EMBARRASSING - U-S OFFICIALS SAY IT PUTS PEOPLE’S
LIVES IN DANGER, PEOPLE WHO MAY BE WORKING BEHIND-THE-SCENES.

THAT'S WHY THE GOVERNMENT IS TRYING TO TRACK DOWN WHO
LEAKED THE INFORMATION TO WIKILEAKS - AND PROSECUTE THEM.

sot:mond200 Eric Holder/Attorney General

it puts at risk the relationships that we have with important allies around the world. we
have an active, ongoing criminal investigation with regard to this matter

BUT WIKILEAKS SAYS IT’S IMPORTANT TO GET THE INFORMATION OUT TO
THE PUBLIC BECAUSE THEY SAY IT SHOWS HOW THE OBAMA
ADMINISTRATION IS TRYING TO COVER UP HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES AND
OTHER CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR

ITS FOUNDER SPOKE VIA TELECONFERENCE FROM AN UNKOWN
LOCATION

JULIAN ASSANGE, FOUNDER OF WIKILEAKS SAYING

"The general trend for accountability of the U.S. military is worrying, but fortunately
there are still good people in the U.S. government and some of the good people want to
see things go the other way and they're willing to step forward to give us material to help
us do that, and give us and to give others similar material as well."

SO FAR, NO ONE HAS BEEN CHARGED FOR THIS LEAK BUT SUSPICION
FALLS ON 23 YEAR OLD US ARMY PRIVATE BRADLEY MANNING -
ALREADY UNDER ARREST FOR AN EARLIER LEAK.

THE GOVERNMENT MADE IT *EASIER* TO SHARE INFORMATION BETWEEN
AGENCIES AFTER 9-11. SOME ANALYSTS SAY THAT MADE IT *EASIER* FOR
A LEAK LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN.

STEVEN?

[STEVEN]

ALRIGHT THANKS JESS - NOW WE'RE NOT DONE YET - COMING UP ,
ANOTHER 24 HOURS IN THE LIFE OF A 17 YEAR OLD SOMEWHERE AROUND
THE WORLD.

WE'RE BACK NOW WITH ANOTHER 24-17 - WHERE WE TAKE A LOOK AT A
DAY IN THE LIFE OF SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE
WORLD.

TODAY, JUSTIN FINCH HEADS NORTH TO FIND OUT WHAT LIFE IS LIKE FOR
A SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD IN A STATE KNOWN AS THE LAST FRONTIER.
ALASKA IS THE LARGEST STATE IN THE U-S, BUT ITS POPULATION RANKS
ONLY 47TH. AND, IT'S SOME 500 MILES AWAY FROM WASHINGTON STATE -
IT'S CLOSEST U-S NEIGHBOR.

[JUSTIN]

you got to know what you're doing.

IT'S A SPORT LIKE NO OTHER - BUT IT’S HOW 17-YEAR OLD ANDREW
DEMIENTIEFF GETS HIS KICKS.
an athlete is allowed 3 attempts at each kick. … after each athlete kicks the ball they raise
the mark 4 inches and it just gets harder and harder. you'll do your approach, jump off,
kick the ball and keep your balance. Your feet can't be apart, they have to be together.

ANDREW IS A NATIVE ALASKAN. HIS TRIBE IS THE ATHABASKAN. AND
THE KICKING YOU SEE HIM DOING IS PART OF SOMETHING CALLED THE
NATIVE GAMES. ANDREW IS PRACTICING FOR THE BIG COMPETITION - THE
WORLD ESKIMO-INDIAN OLYMPICS, WHERE HE HOPES TO TAKE THE GOLD
IN ONE OF THE KICKING EVENTS.

so what games are you competing in this year?

I'll be competing in the 1 foot high kick, 2 foot high kick, Alaskan reach, there's about 22
events.

THE ESKIMO OLYMPICS ARE A MODERN-DAY VERSION OF A COMPETITION
THAT NATIVE PEOPLE IN ALASKA HAVE BEEN DOING FOR GENERATIONS.
WHAT MIGHT LOOK LIKE WEIRD EVENTS ACTUALLY TIE BACK TO NATIVE
CULTURE. LIKE THE EAR PULL - where two compete to see who can pull the
hardest. IT'S A WAY TO GET NATIVE HUNTERS USED TO THE PAIN OF
FROSTBITE AND WHAT ABOUT THE KICKING…

the one foot high kick and two foot high kick were signaling for the hunters … they send
their highest kicker onto a hill, if they see his one leg go up that means the hunt is
successful… but if they see the 2 legs going up then it was unsuccessful.

ALASKA IS HOME TO ABOUT 10 DIFFERENT NATIVE AMERICAN GROUPS -
LIKE THE ATHABASCANS, ANDREW'S TRIBE & THE LARGEST GROUP, THE
ALEUTIANS WHOSE LAND IS ACTUALLY CLOSER TO RUSSIA THAN THE U.S.
AND THE INUPIAK, WHO LIVE WAY UP IN THE NORTH.

THE TERM ESKIMO CAME FROM EUROPEANS TO DESCRIBE *ALL* THE
NATIVE PEOPLE LIVING IN THE ARCTIC.

KEEPING HIS HERITAGE ALIVE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ANDREW - NOT
ONLY DOES HE COMPETE IN THE NATIVE GAMES BUT HE ALSO WORKS
HERE, AT THE ALASKA NATIVE HERITAGE CENTER. HE GIVES VISITORS
TOURS OF TRADITIONAL NATIVE BUILDINGS - AND NO, THEY DO NOT LIVE
IN IGLOOS.

So when you're sharing your culture with others, what does it do for you?

it um, it definitely makes me feel that people, when they think of Alaska they wont think
of … oh Eskimos living in an igloo. The igloo… like I said before was just a temporary
home. The hunters would use it and wait for the storm to pass by.
AND REMEMBER THOSE MOVES FROM BEFORE? WELL ANDREW AND HIS
TEAMMATES ALSO SHOW THEM OFF TO VISITORS.

what do you want them to take away from the sports that you're showing them?

we're just trying to get it out there more… show the world our traditional native games…
having an audience to kick in front of, showing people my traditional culture. Showing
people, that's carrying it on because I'm doing it.

CARRYING ON HIS NATIVE ROOTS HAS HELPED ANDREW GET THROUGH
SOME TOUGH TIMES. HE HAS BEEN LIVING IN A FOSTER HOME AND ONLY
OCCASSIONALLY VISITS HIS MOTHER IN ANCHORAGE. MOST OF THE
YEAR, HE LIVES IN A TINY VILLAGE WHERE HIS GRANDPARENTS ARE
FROM.

in my village there's no running water, there's no electricity. So the only source of heat is
our wood stove and body heat. So we're chopping wood 24-7 year round. we hunt a lot
today we fish a lot today… a delicacy in our village is moose nose and moose head soup.
It definitely takes an acquired taste.

LEARNING MORE ABOUT NATIVE CULTURE HAS TAUGHT ANDREW HOW
MUCH IN COMMON HE HAS WITH OTHER NATIVE TEENAGERS - LIKE WHEN
HE DISCOVERED A NAVAJO CO-WORKER SPOKE A LANGUAGE SIMILAR TO
HIS OWN.

our languages are very similar… in my language to say hello is "nate" in Navajo its
"nate" We can even have small conversations in our own native languages. I think that's
crazy though because he's from way down in Arizona and I'm from up here in Alaska, a
village of 250 people.

IT'S THAT CONNECTION THAT KEEPS ANDREW "KICKING IT" IN ALASKA.

I think that's why we kick everyday, it’s part of our culture and it’s what our ancestors
have been doing for thousands of years.

JUSTIN FINCH, CHANNEL ONE NEWS.

[STEVEN]

WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ANDREW'S HOME-- WELL WE'VE GOT IT--
CHECK OUT THE "ALL ABOUT ALASKA" PAGE OVER AT CHANNELONE DOT
COM.

NOW DON'T GO ANYWHERE YET - BECAUSE WE'VE STILL GOT ONE MORE
THING TO SHOW YOU. CHECK THIS OUT.
ON HOMECOMING NIGHT AT BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL IN CALIFORNIA -
THE FOOTBALL TEAM TOOK A BACKSEAT TO A 17-YEAR-OLD NAMED
YUNHEE CHOI.

YUNHEE HAS CEREBRAL PALSY - A NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER THAT
MAKES IT HARD TO CONTROL MUSCLES.

USING A DEVICE TO COMMUNICATE BECAUSE SHE CAN'T ON HER OWN.
YUNHEE HAD A MESSAGE FOR THE WORLD.

i just want them to know that i am a normal teenager. Movies, tv shows, and boys.

AND LATER THAT NIGHT, SHE HEADED DOWN THE RED CARPET TO
CENTER STAGE - WHERE SHE WAS "CROWNED" HOMECOMING QUEEN
