 Technical description
This table unit is used to explain torsion and torsional vibration
in experiments. Demonstrations and student experiments are
both foreseen in equal measures. The core of the experiment is
a metal torsion bar. With the aid of chucks, mass discs of
varying inertia can be attached to the bar. It this way it is
possible to assemble torsional vibrator systems with up to
three masses. Vibrations can be induced on the system using
an electrical exciter supplied from the control unit. An adjust-
able damper can be used to influence the vibrations. Shaft
encoders on the chucks provide the amplitude of vibration as an
electrical signal. The control unit conditions these signals and
makes them available, e.g., for display on an oscilloscope
(which must be provided) or on the PC data acquisition system

 TM 150                    Universal Vibration System
                                                                                                Technical Description
                                                                                               The instructional system covers a wide range of topics
                                                                                               in mechanical vibration technology. It is mounted on a
                                                                                               sturdy, low-vibration aluminum sectional frame which
                                                                                               is installed on a rolling laboratory trolley with braked
                                                                                               wheels. Quick fastening elements for the formed
                                                                                               grooves for quick and accurate experimental set-up.
                                                                                               Forced vibration is generated with an electrical motor-
                                                                                               driven unbalance exciter. The exciter frequency can be
                                                                                               set precisely on a control unit with digital display. An
                                                                                               oil damper is used for vibration abatement. A bar-type
                                                                                               oscillator that can be adjusted with weights is included
                                                                                               for absorber experiments. A mechanical drum and a
                                                                                               polar diagram recorder record the vibration. The single
                                                                                               parts are stored in the protective storage
                                                                                               compartments of the laboratory trolley. The external
                                                                                               computer-aided PC data acquisition (TM 150.20) and

                                                                                                Technical Description
                                                                                               This experiment on vibration is of a table-top design.
                                                                                               All experimental set-ups are rapidly and securely
                                                                                               assembled on a double profile frame made of
                                                                                               aluminium using slot nuts and clamping levers. The
                                                                                               vibrator consists of a beam mounted in ball bearings at
                                                                                               one end; a helical spring is hung on the other end of
                                                                                               the beam. The attachment of springs, the exciter and a
                                                                                               damper to a perforated panel permits a wide range of
                                                                                               different set-ups to be reproduced. Either an
                                                                                               unbalance exciter or a displacement exciter generate
                                                                                               vibrations; the frequency of the vibrations can be
                                                                                               adjusted using the electronic control unit. The
                                                                                               displacement exciter can be fitted directly to the base
                                                                                               of the spring. The vibrations can be damped using the
                                                                                               adjustable viscosity damper. To record vibration
                                                                                               processes over time, a mechanical drum plotter is
                                                                                               included. The experiment also includes an amplitude
                                                                                               contact with a TTL output, e.g. for triggering
                                                                                               stroboscopes. The external computer-aided PC data
                                                                                               acquisition (TM 150.20) and a practice set for torsional
                                                                                               vibrations (TM 150.02) are available as accessories.

                                                                                                Technical description
                                                                                              This table unit is used to perform experiments
                                                                                              on a spring-mass system. A low friction ball
                                                                                              bearing mounted carriage can move between
                                                                                              two ground guide pillars. Additional weights can
                                                                                              be attached to the carriage; the carriage is
                                                                                              suspended on a helical spring. The zero position
                                                                                              can be adjusted using a threaded spindle at the
                                                                                              top of the spring. The guide pillars are attached
                                                                                              to a strong cast metal base with handles. To
                                                                                              damp the vibrations, an oil-filled liquid damper is
                                                                                              provided. The continuous connecting rod
                                                                                              moving in spherical liners without a seal ensures
                                                                                              even, direction-independent damping with only
                                                                                              minimal Coulomb friction. A mechanical drum
                                                                                              recorder with chart paper enables the vibrations
                                                                                              to be recorded using a fibre pen attached directly
                                                                                              to the carriage.

 Technical description
This table unit is used to show the resonance and critical
bending speed on rotating shafts. The construction of the rotor
of a thin, flexible shaft and rigid weights facilitates the theoreti-
cal comprehension. The rotor is held on the base frame with
pivoting bearings. The weights and bearings can be placed at
any location along the shaft and attached securely with quick-
acting clamps. It is driven by a flexible coupling. Two motor
speeds can be fine-adjusted and preset with ten-speed potenti-
ometers. They are controlled electronically and displayed digi-
tally. It is possible to switch speeds during the experiment as
desired. A transparent protective hood covers the rotating parts.
A set of electrical vibration sensors with clamping set
TM 620.01 is also available.

distribution can be clearly demonstrated using this unit. Due to the use of
thin, elastic rotor shafts made of high-strength steel, the oscillatory
phenomena can be easily understood. A range of shaft diameters and
the free choice of the bearing arrangement make it possible to perform a
wide variety of experiments. Adapters in the bearings compensate for
different diameters, catch bearings limit the amplitude of the oscillation.
The freedom of movement of the rotor is assured by an elastic coupling.
A Laval rotor with discrete mass distribution can be assembled using a
mass disc. As a supplement to this unit, a set of vibration sensors, TM
620.01, is available. These enable the path of the rotor to be displayed
on an oscilloscope.
