A Sparkling Event: ANWC Holiday Party Dec. 14th
This fun, festive tradition brings members together to welcome the holidays. This year, ANWC is
supporting an important charity – The Children’s Inn at NIH. The Inn is a respite for children and their families
who stay together while participating in groundbreaking medical treatment at the National Institutes of Health in
Bethesda. Vice President of Communications Meredith Carlson Daly, who is the Media Relations Manager at The
Inn, will be bringing longtime Inn Board Member Molly Mahoney Matthews to speak about The Inn. Club
members are asked to bring as a donation a supermarket food gift card from the Giant or Shoppers Food

Through the generosity of ANWC Board Member Anne Ganz, the Holiday Party will feature a small exhibition of the private holiday cards of
cartoonist Denys Wortman. Mr. Wortman worked from 1924-1954 for New York City papers, syndicated nationally. The Museum of the City
of New York just opened the exhibit "Denys Wortman Rediscovered," which runs through March 2011.

                               "Immigration and the American Dream.” Ms. Orchowski is a former editor for Congressional
                               Quarterly and a former Associated Press reporter in South America.

    Event Success - Helen’s Happy Hour - Celebrating Helen Thomas. . .
    The Club celebrated distinguished longtime member Helen Thomas who turned 90 in 2010 with “Helen’s Happy Hour and Piano Bar.”
    Dozens of friends and members filled the club for a sensational November evening, including Austin Kiplinger, who welcomed Helen into
    Ninetydom with a ditty he sang to the tune of “Hello Dolly.”

                                                              Former National Press Club President Don Larrabee joined
                                                              Kiplinger in toasting Helen as an outstanding “Silver Owl” –
                                                              those who give a hoot about Washington journalism. Ginny
                                                              Daly, our own former club President, who organized the
                                                              event, drew many friends, including the talented playwright,
                                                              lyricist and political satirist Joan Cushing. Ms. Cushing
                                                              graciously serenaded the club with an outstanding
                                                              performance as Mrs. Foggybottom, once the longest-
                                                              running “newsical satire” at the Omni-Shoreham hotel.        Helen Thomas and Mrs. Foggybottom

                                                              Ms. Cushing lightly roasted Helen, telling her she had indeed become a part of history: “Oh for the
                                                              days when you were 89 and Barack Obama brought you the birthday cake,” said Mrs.
                                                              Foggybogttom to a room of laughter. “You’re 90 and many presidents have come and gone; many
                                                              rich years have gone by. Fidel Castro was asked what the difference is between Democracy in
                                                              America and Democracy in Cuba and he said: ‘I don’t have to answer questions from Helen

Kristie Miller Enlightens Members on the Personal Life of our 28th President

If you missed our Nov. 8 program with special guest author and biographer Kristie Miller, you most likely will be
surprised to learn that Woodrow Wilson and his two First Ladies led exciting lives with more than a little intrigue,
romance and political machinations. After his first wife Ellen died, he remarried. Edith Wilson survived her husband
and lived for decades near the club.

Miller, whose interest in writing about the Wilsons was partly influenced by her own family's political history and
friendships, provided a fascinating introduction and perspective into two little known women whose lives in the White

House had enormous implications for our country and future presidents and their wives.
Her book, “Ellen and Edith, Woodrow Wilson's First Ladies,” was published by University Press of Kansas.

Warm Welcome New Member

                             Nicole Macon
                             The Club welcomes new member Nicole Macon, who moved to Washington, DC from her native Texas, to jump-
                             start a career in international affairs, with a particular emphasis on East Asia. Ms. Macon studied Japanese during
                             her junior year abroad in Japan. After working in international education and other international organizations
                             for four years, she decided to return to school to study broadcast journalism at the University of Maryland College
                             Nicole joined the American News Women’s Club to network and make lasting connections. She hopes to utilize
                             her language and cultural background in East Asia in a broadcasting career after graduating from the University
                             of Maryland in late 2011.

Member Mary Daly Gorman honored for helping the homeless
Longtime Club Member Mary Daly Gorman was honored for her dedication and commitment to
help the homeless in the DC area. Ms. Gorman received the Benjamin E. Cooper Award for
Leadership for her visionary role in founding the Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship
Place more than 20 years ago.

Ms. Gorman has been a faithful board member since its founding. She also has been a passionate
volunteer with the Zacchaeus Soup Kitchen, Unity Health Care and the Capital Interfaith Hospitality

Jan. 31st: Bagel began her writing career: an award-winning advertising copywriter for print and broadcast. She is credited with the ability to get
inside the minds, hearts and styles of her notable clients, including David Hyde Pierce, Candy Crowley, Jean Smart, Joan Cusack, Richard
Roundtree, Linda Ellerbee, Lamman Rucker, James Earl Jones, Kathleen Turner, Chris Matthews, Willard Scott, and Ed McMahon.
The author of several plays, she also wrote the Bagel Bible, a funny, clever series of books devoted to bagel history, lore and recipes. She promises to
