FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Intersil Introduces Industry’s First Single IC to Power and Control Two Satellite Dish Low Noise Block Down-Converters --New dual regulator IC saves space and reduces costs while providing high performance MILPITAS, CA, March 6, 2003 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced the introduction of the new ISL6405 dual-output low-noise block (LNB) down- converter supply and control voltage regulator IC. The ISL6405 IC is the first of its kind and was specifically designed to save satellite set-top box manufacturers board space, parts count and costs for their set-top boxes. "By working closely with our satellite systems customers, we became aware of their need to simplify the implementation of power and control functions for dual LNB systems," said Randy Roberts, director of Intersil’s Broadband Power Products. "The ISL6405 is the industry’s first and only single IC to provide the high degree of integration, performance and cost reduction that our customers were seeking." The ISL6405 is the only IC needed to provide independent power and functional control for two LNB modules located on the antenna of a two-channel satellite receiver system. This dual- output device includes two current-mode boost pulse-width modulation (PWM) controllers and two low-noise linear regulators. The ISL6405 uses an industry-standard I2C (Interface for Integrated Circuits) interface to control internal functions. The I2C registers also serve to allow the system to read fault conditions. Each of the two independent power and control circuits puts out either 13 V or 18 V DC for LNB power. Voltage compensation is available through a convenient line length compensation feature. An internal 22-kHz tone generator provides the capability to super-impose DiSEqC 1.1 coding on the supplies for LNB and antenna control. The ISL6405 is available in both a 28-pin EPSOIC and a 32-pad QFN package. —more— ISL6405, Page Two ISL6405 Features Summary Single 8-V to 14-V DC supply - no separate logic supply needed Selectable 13-V or 18-V outputs Available cable length voltage drop compensation (1 V) High output current, 750 mA per channel, simultaneously Internal over-temperature protection and diagnostics I2C compatible interface for remote device control DiSEqC 1.1 coding with a built in 22-kHz tone Very small packages for smaller board area - 28-pin EPSOIC and 32-pad QFN Excellent thermal efficiency Efficiency of greater than 92% - no heatsink needed Full set of robust protection and monitoring functions Each LNB power and control circuit is independent for true dual operation Dynamic over-current and short-circuit protection ISL6405 Pricing and Availability The ISL6405 is available now. Price for hundred-unit quantities of the ISL6405EEB (EPSOIC) is $2.20 each and of the ISL6405ER (QFN) is $2.35 each. Other volume pricing is available by request.
