                         PROGRAM OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION


Introduction: The Hyams Foundation, Inc. is a private foundation that provides support to
nonprofit organizations in Boston and Chelsea, Massachusetts. The Foundation will distribute
approximately $5.6 million in grants in 2010 through its regular grantmaking process and special
funding initiatives. Hyams focuses its resources in three major areas: Affordable Housing, Civic
Engagement and Teen Development. In addition to its direct grantmaking, the Foundation is
engaged in mission-related investing including making Program Related Investments in the
affordable housing area. The Foundation is seeking a Program Officer who will lead the
Foundation’s Affordable Housing work. This includes oversight of the Foundation’s direct
funding to increase the production and preservation of affordable housing; its involvement in the
Home Funders Collaborative, which focuses on increasing the supply of housing for homeless
and other extremely low-income families; and its affordable housing-related community
organizing and public policy grantmaking. The Foundation also is interested in candidates who
have training or experience in broader community development and neighborhood planning
activities.

Responsibilities:

   Working with other staff and the Foundation’s trustees, lead the Foundation’s efforts to
    determine specific strategies and intended outcomes in the Affordable Housing area; assist
    in translating the Foundation’s mission and values into these grantmaking and related
    activities; and oversee the implementation and evaluation of these efforts

   Review grant proposals in the Affordable Housing area; conduct interviews and site visits
    with applicants; prepare written reports and recommendations to the trustees; track the
    progress of current grant portfolios, aggregate data and prepare periodic summaries and
    assessments of the activities and results of this grantmaking

   Review and assess requests for Program Related Investments (PRIs) in the Affordable
    Housing area and monitor these investments

   Assist with the review grant proposals in other program areas as requested by the Director
    of Programs

   Communicate with nonprofit agencies, low-income communities and public and private
    funders about the Foundation’s grantmaking priorities, guidelines and proposal review
    process

   Provide assistance to organizations and individuals requesting information or advice about
    resource development, program development and/or nonprofit management issues

   Represent the Foundation at community meetings, conferences and other events

   Participate in, and provide leadership to, collaborative efforts involving other funders and
    community groups designed to address issues of importance to the Foundation and the
    broader community

   Participate in the development of the Foundation’s policies and procedures in the Affordable
    Housing and other program areas, including providing staff support to the board’s Program
    Committee

   Assist and support other staff and the trustees as requested in carrying out the Foundation’s
    work

   Supervise interns or consultants to the Foundation

Qualifications:

   Significant experience with and knowledge of affordable housing, housing finance and
    community development; knowledge of mission-related investing a plus

   Understanding of and experience with community-based nonprofit organizations

   Understanding of and experience with local low-income neighborhoods and communities

   Demonstrated commitment to the values and mission of The Hyams Foundation, Inc.,
    including addressing racial and ethnic disparities

   Excellent writing and verbal communication skills

   Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to analyze, interpret and assess
    programmatic, management and financial information

   Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues and community-
    based organizations

   Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently and meet multiple deadlines

   Undergraduate degree required; graduate degree, or course work and/or experience
    comparable to a graduate degree, preferred

Compensation:

Salary will be commensurate with an individual’s experience and background. Competitive
