EMC2 Workpackage description for ME6 (18 month plan) 6.1 Start date or starting event: Workpackage number TID CURE DFKI DIST DUND MCS Participant id 1.75 0.25 1.75 0.75 Person-months per participant: 2.25 1 Objectives: Obj-6.1.1: Compilation of a catalogue of relevant performance measures and further technical assessment criteria against which the EMC2 platform and also third-party platforms can be evaluated. Obj-6.1.2: Evaluation of the core platform using the specified criteria and measures. Description of work: WP-6.1 Technical evaluation WP-Lead: TID, Duration: M1-M18 Description of tasks: T-6.1.1 Specification of technical assessment criteria and performance measures Task-Lead: DFKI, Duration: M1-M3, Contributors: CURE, CUT, DFKI, DUND, MCS, SICS, USFD, TID. To provide a rational basis for the adoption of pre-existing middleware components, protocols, data exchange formats etc., and also to enable a proper assessment of technical achievements concerning the EMC2 platform, the outcome of this task will be a catalogue of evaluation criteria. Though focus will be on technical aspects, a usability expert will participate in this task since usability and social aspects are likely to imply further technical constraints which must not be overlooked. T-6.1.2 Evaluation of existing integration platforms, protocols, and exchange formats Task-Lead: TID, Duration: M1-M6, EU-Contributors: CUT, DFKI, DUND, MCS, USFD, SICS, TID This task aims to test and evaluate existing integration platforms, middleware solutions, data exchange formats and protocols, etc. with regards to potential deployment in EMC2. The task will start with a close examination of relevant platforms that are already in use (or have even been developed) by one or more partners. Concerning third-party developments, as far as practicable evaluations will be based on installations and test-runs of available platforms and components to achieve a profound basis for decision making. T-6.1.3 Evaluation of the EMC2 core platform Task-Lead: USFD, Duration: M10-M18, Contributors: DFKI, DIST, DUND, TID, MCS Platform development as issued in WP-6.2 and WP-6.3 will be interleaved by evaluation exercises concerning both components and the integrated core platform. T-6.1.4 Documentation, dissemination and training Task-Lead: TID, Duration: M6-M18, Page 1 of 7 Month 1 SICS USFD CUT 1 xxx 10 EMC2 Contributors: DFKI, TID, USFD, MCS, CUT This task covers activities to ensure that evaluation results and potential implications for technology development in the overall IP get documented and will be circulated and discussed with concerned partners. Specific training activities will concern the explanation of assessment criteria and their practical application. Description of work: WP-6.2 Platform design and specification Lead: TID, Duration: M1-M18 Description of work: T-6.2.1 Design and specification of general EMC2 architecture Task-Lead: TID, Duration: M3-M8, Contributors: CUT, DFKI, DIST, DUND, MCS, USFD, SICS. The goal of this task is to (i) design a modular, flexible, open, and scalable architecture of the EMC2 architecture, (ii) prepare the necessary specifications for the basic components such as cognition components, learning components, perception components, mm-dialogue management, components, etc. implementation, and (iii) provide a detailed workplan for the implementation work. T-6.2.2 Specification of component interfaces, protocols and data-exchange formats Task-Lead: DIST, Duration: M3-M8, Contributors: CUT, DFKI, DUND, TID, USFD, MCS The task comprises specification work concerning interfaces and exchange formats and protocols as required for data exchange (i) among platform components, and (ii) to electronically accessible services and information sources in the user’s physical environment. Pre-existing standards as well as accessible proprietary formats and protocols will be considered as far as appropriate. T-6.2.3 Guidelines and recommendations for using the platform Task-Lead: TID, Duration: M6-M15, Contributors: CUT, DFKI, DIST, SICS, USFD This task provides guidelines for implementing the companions in the platform. It addresses how to adapt, integrate and communicate architectural components to set up the overall companion architecture. Activation and deployment of the companion into the computing and communication platform is also considered. The task also comprises the set-up and maintenance of a central repository containing up-todate specifications and documentation accessible by all IP partners. Deliverables Month 3: D-6.2.1 Initial specification of general EMC2 architecture and implementation plan (Report) Page 3 of 7 EMC2 Month 8: D-6.2.2 Updated specification of EMC2 architecture and implementation plan (Report) Milestones1 and expected result MS-6.2, Month 12: Technical evaluations protocols and metrics defined 1 Milestones are control points at which decisions are needed; for example concerning which of several technologies will be adopted as the basis for the next phase of the project. Priority will be given to the development of components that are needed for the platform core. In addition, this task covers the provision of suitable diagnostic and debugging tools/APIs for the platform and component integration. T-6.3.2 Wireless portable micro network for integration of distributed sensors Task-Lead: MCS, Duration: M6-M15 For EMC2 we anticipate the need for a highly distributed architecture of components that are carried around with the user. Such components may correspond to various sensors that need to transmit data to other possibly also distributed processing units. For this purpose a wireless portable micro network need to become an integral part of the EMC2 platform. T-6.3.3 Set-up of a media-streaming infrastructure Task-Lead: DIST, Duration: M6-M15, Contributors: DFKI, DUND, MCS, SICS, TID Flexibility of the EMC2 platform will manifest itself by giving an application designer the choice where to process rich-media data as required in a multimodal interface. For instance, if high-quality speech output is required, synthesis may be done at a high-end server from which it will be streamed to the mobile client. Likewise, deep analysis of rich-media may easily exceed the capabilities of mobile computing resources and thus need to be streamed to a server as well. Therefore, the EMC2 platform need to integrate a suitable infrastructure for the streaming of rich media. T-6.3.4 Set-up of the deployment model for the companion components Task-Lead: TID, Duration: M6-M15, Contributors: DFKI, DIST, SICS, USFD This task addresses the set-up the deployment model that is the processor where the principal architectural component of the companion might be performed. In addition, for demonstration purposes show-case setup will require access to a number of available services and information sources. The development of Page 5 of 7 EMC2 such services is beyond the scope of the current IP but interfaces need to be developed to exemplify how they can be integrated into the EMC2 platform. T-6.3.5 Integration of core platform Task-Lead: DFKI, Duration: M12-M15, Contributors: DIST, DUND, MCS, USFD, SICS, TID This task will bring about an integrated version of the core EMC2 platform which will serve as the basis for the set-up of the first demonstrators. Deliverables Month 15: D-6.3.1 Integrated core platform Version 1 (Software) Milestones1 and expected result MS-6.3, Month 15: Core version of the EMC2 platform implemented 1 Milestones are control points at which decisions are needed; for example concerning which of several technologies will be adopted as the basis for the next phase of the project. Implemented demonstrator functionalities will take into account specification work done in ME8 as well as technical achievements reached by other MEs of the IP. The outcome of the task will also comprise a technical documentation of the demonstrator set-up. T-6.4.2 Technical Set-up of first Leisure Companion demonstrator Task-Lead: DFKI, Duration: M15-M18, Contributors: DIST, DUND, MCS, SICS, USFD, TID.
