Consumer Confidence Reports (CCRs)
Informing your customers yearly about the sources and quality of your water became a state and federal mandate with the SDWA amendments of 1996. The exact format and language required for doing so can be confusing, especially for operators and managers of small systems. This onsite workshop will guide participants through the step-by-step process of producing a Consumer Confidence Report for their water system for calendar year 2008, in time to meet the June 30th deadline for mailing.

Fundamentals of pumps and Motors
Unless your system is fed entirely by gravity from source to customer, moving and lifting water is the single most inefficient use of power and money at your utility. You will not only learn why in this workshop, but how to choose pumps, motors and pipe materials to minimize waste and maximize tight budget dollars. This workshop will cover pump design, terminology and hydraulics, basic wire-to-water efficiency calculations and friction loss in pipes and fittings. Also covered will be electric motor design and terminology, NEMA frame types and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) features and benefits. (Qualifies for four contact hours 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.)

small Water system operator Expense Reimbursement Grant
Cooperative Personnel Services (CPS) Human Resource Services, is offering the Expense Reimbursement Grant (ERG) Program, in partnership with the California Dept. of Public Health, under a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This grant reimburses small water system operators for attending training to qualify for and take the operator certification exams and to complete the continuing education requirement for renewing certification. You may be eligible for this program if you meet the following criteria: • • You are employed by a water system serving a population of 3,300 or less, and Your water system is designated community or non-transient/non-community by CDPH.
For more information or to see if you qualify, contact CPS at 866/867-3594 or visit their website at: www.cps.ca.gov/tlc/sws

asset Management for operators (ONLINE WORKSHOP)
Is your water system putting aside one to two percent of its annual revenue to replace worn out assets and infrastructure? Many operators and managers are unaware of the true replacement cost of their aging assets—until an emergency occurs and there’s not enough money in the bank. This workshop will describe and demonstrate the seven steps to creating an asset management plan, as well as provide useful tools and templates to simplify the process. (Qualifies for 2 contact hours)

Basic Budgeting for operators (ONLINE WORKSHOP)
Operators often need to produce budgets for various activities and projects, whether it’s a small water main repair project or the annual budget for their entire department. Good budgeting is an essential tool for managing cash flow and planning for the future. This workshop will describe the step-by-step process of developing budgets for individual projects or annual operations, and demonstrate various free budgeting templates and spreadsheets that are available. Minerals and secondary Contaminants: Cause, Effect and Removal (ONLINE WORKSHOP)
Many ground and surface water sources in California contain high levels of iron, manganese, hardness or other minerals. If yours are among them, you know the cost and difficulty of dealing with these contaminants. This workshop will describe the sources and occurrence of mineral contaminants in raw water, the regulatory framework addressing secondary contaminants, and provide an overview of the various treatment methods and technology available for their control. (Qualifies for 2 contact hours)

Fundamentals of GIs/Gps (ONLINE WORKSHOP)
Mapping technology is rapidly moving away from hand-drawn sheets to fully computerized “layers” of information tied to
earth coordinates. Satellite technology and the resulting advent of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Global Positioning System (GPS) have revolutionized the way cartographic data are developed, used, managed and stored. This workshop will provide a brief history of GIS/GPS, describe in layman’s terms how the two systems interconnect to provide highly specialized maps with a few mouse clicks, and discuss the types of devices and software needed to start a GIS/GPS program at your utility. Creating an operations plan (ONLINE WORKSHOP)
Your only licensed operator has just left town due to a family emergency, and handed you the phone number of a certified operator in the next town. Will the substitute operator know how your system works and what needs to be done on a daily basis to keep it safe and in compliance? A well-crafted operations plan would enable anyone with the proper certification to carry on without skipping a beat, and is a requirement for accessing state infrastructure funding sources. This workshop will describe exactly how to prepare one, complete with a simple fill-in-the-blanks template that you can use to create an operations plan for your system. (Qualifies for 2 contact hours)

Take the TMF TUNE-UP for California Drinking Water Systems
Access the TMF Tune-Up at http://neien.des.ucdavis.edu/tmf/
Is your water system operating at its peak efficiency? Are the components of your infrastructure replaced on a regular schedule? Do your certified operators receive a “living wage?” Is your water system operated as a viable and financially solvent business would be? Or is your water system in need of a Tune-Up? The TMF Tune-up is an online technical, managerial and financial tool to help you assess your water system’s strengths and weaknesses. It will provide you with an Individualized Development Plan that includes relative scores in each of the TMF categories, a variety of pertinent components and a list of resources tailored to your water system’s needs. Survey responses will be used for statistical purposes only and will NOT be provided to your regulator.
