1270 Air Spring Conversion Kit $49.95
Convert torsion spring mini mills to air spring.
Newer mini mills use a torsion spring mounted on the side of the column to support
the head. This kit provides all the parts required to change to the vertical air spring
                     that mounts inside the column.
With the air spring installed, you can move the mill head up until the top of the
casting is flush with the top of the column. You can move it down until it contacts
the adjustable Z-axis stop set in its lowest position.

casting is almost flush with the top of the column. You can move it down until it
almost contacts the adjustable Z-axis stop set in it's lowest position.
This economy kit includes more parts than our other, more expensive air spring kit.
Besides all the parts required to mount the air spring, this kit also includes a longer
Z-axis rack so you can take advantage of the longer head motion.
This air spring has about 35 pounds of force versus the 25 pounds of force produced
by our other air spring. This is still not enough to totally support the head, but it is
an improvement (and a heck of a lot more support than the torsion arm provides).

(but new) air springs. These air springs have a different mounting configuration, so
we redesigned the mounting parts to suit.

                        1928 Bed Extension Kit 14" $149.95
This kit turns your 7x10 or 7x12 lathe into a 7x14 lathe. It includes a bed casting, a
lead screw, a rack, a motor mount, a chip pan, 2 chip pan braces, several fasteners,
                        and complete instructions.
The 7x14 bed is actually 6" longer than the 7x10 bed. It is 2" longer than the 7x12
                        bed.
This is NOT a bolt-together kit. You must drill and tap 9 holes in the new bed
casting to match your lathe. You need three metric taps: M3x0.5, M6x1, and

                          2288 Mandrel, Lathe $14.95
This bronze mandrel is 5/8" diameter at the bottom end and .508" at the 10-32
screw end. It dramatically reduces the time required to machine the Spindle Repair
Tool Materials kit or any part that can be drilled through in the center, because it
allows 2 surfaces to be cut at once. Then flip the part and the other side of the
                          piece can be easily machined.
It helps to avoid multiple chuck changes by first drilling a 3/16" hole in the piece's
center, then clamp back against the .508" wall using the #10 washer and cap
screw. This allows maximum exposure to cut the part face before final
dimensioning. Should you require a mandrel just over 508", then the aluminum
collar can be used to tighten the part onto the 1/8" bottom shoulder. If you are
into threading, this part can be machined to hold a 1/2"-13 nut to really increase
                          torque availability.

This is the mill table from a 3-in-1 machine. It is approximately 9.5" long, 4.25"
                          wide and 1" thick.
The mill table has 12 mm T-slots so it uses 7/16" T-slot nuts.

The Taig milling attachment makes a good small milling attachment for the mini
                          lathe.
You must make a mounting block that is about 1" tall to mount this milling
                          attachment on the cross slide.
The total vertical travel is 1.5" and the dial provides 0.001" increments. The vise
                          width is 2". The table is 2" x 3-3/4".
Overall the milling attachment is 2.25" wide, 3.38" deep, and 5.75" tall.

                         2186 Center It V-Block $14.95
CENTER IT makes it easy to drill round stock and tubing
Bolts to the drill press table and enables the drilling of round pieces parallel and
                         centered
Grooves on the outer sides eliminate slippage while holding by hand for sawing
Place CENTER IT on the drill press table, run the stationary bit down to center the
                         fixture
CENTER IT is a tool for drilling pipe and other round objects. CENTER IT is made
specifically for use in a drill press. The V-block bolts to the drill press table and
enables the drilling of round pieces parallel and centered. The grooves on the outer
sides eliminate slippage while holding pipes, etc., for sawing on job sites or other
applications. To use, simply place CENTER IT on the drill press table, run the bit
down (with motor off) to hold the jig centered on the bit, then bolt the jig to press
table. No clamping of the tube is necessary since the angled flats of the jig hold it
centered. Holes will automatically be centered on the tube with no center-punching
required. If tubing is too large to drill in a single operation it can simply be turned
                         over.
Especially for the woodworking hobbyist, the metalworking enthusiast, and even
the professional automotive mechanic, CENTER IT makes speedy and precise work
of drilling tasks. Its "hand vise" grip ridges allow no-clamp holding of round stock for
                         sawing and cutting.
CENTER IT is made of heavy aluminum extrusion.
CNETER IT is 5" Long, 4" Wide, and 1-3/4" High.

                         Removable strainer prevents clogs
                         Spra-Kool Midget
The Midget Spra-Kool unit has successfully been used for over 30 years as a
versatile, economical method of applying a coolant spray for machining.
The Spra-Kool unit works on 30 to 150 PSI air pressure. (You furnish the air
                         compressor.)
Simply attach the ball-check fitting to the air supply, drop the suction tube into a
coolant container, and locate the nozzle by means of the spring-wire attaching clip.
The soft wire in the nose can be bent to direct the spray to the work. It is designed
for easy transfer from one machine to another.
The coolant container can be anything, such as a plastic bottle or a coffee can.
It takes only seconds to locate and set the nozzle for full coverage of any area.
Slight adjustment of the control valve permits regulating the volume from a fine
mist to a heavy, wet spray.
Only solid brass fittings are used. There is nothing to rust or corrode. The system is
suitable for use with any type of soluble coolant or oil.

Project Plans: Tools
                         2304 Rike-Vise Plans $7.00
The Rike-Vise was invented by Bill Reichart. This simple tool is especially designed
for the home machine shop. For many jobs it will replace a standard vise. The Rike-
Vise is described as two 90° angle plates joined at the corner, and providing a foot
so it can be easily clamped to a machine table or a lathe faceplate. The square
donut piece provides an accurate clamp to secure a work piece in the base. It is
made of mild steel. The plans include tips on accurately building the vise, plus
                         details on using it.
The plans comprise six 8-1/2" x 11" pages. The plans include information on building
                         and using the Rike-Vise.
                         Features of the Rike-Vise:
At the lathe you can turn square stock round or drill square stock perfectly
                         concentric.
You can also do the same to rectangular stock, and drill or turn it in the exact
center or to one side, as you desire.
The vise holds work perpendicular for drilling at your drill press.
At the milling machine, you can mill an end perfectly square, or notch or groove
                         perfectly parallel to the sides.
It holds stock perpendicular for use at the surface grinder.

                       Starrett catalog number 92-6.
These dividers combine rigidity, light weight and easy handling. The legs are forged
steel, well shaped, properly tempered and highly polished. The adjustable point
may be quickly removed and a common pencil inserted in its place. No. 88 Ball
Points may be used with the No. 92 Series.
The sturdy construction of the joint, combined with the quadrant, eliminates side
deflection of the legs. A quadrant adjusting nut permits fine-adjustments for close
measurements. A check nut located between the legs locks the legs firmly after the
proper adjustment has been made. This feature prevents the legs from moving in
and out with the grain on wood when scribing, or sliding off rough spots when
                       scribing on metals.

0.005" per foot (0.42 mm per meter) accuracy
                      Starrett catalog number 98-6.
These levels have ground and graduated main vials, and a cross test vial. These
vials are adjustable to a positive setting and are housed in a satin chrome brass
tube with a friction-fit closing cover to prevent breakage.
The base of the levels features an involute groove running the length of the base,
which provides a reliable seat for round work such as pipes or shafting. With the
cross test vial, it is possible to simultaneously level in both directions. This prevents
inaccuracies in the main vial reading caused by canting the level sidewise on round
                      work.
The main level vials have graduations that are approximately 80-90 seconds or .005"
per foot (0.42 mm per meter). There are five, six, or seven lines on each side of the
bubble, depending on the base length.
These are the finest levels available, used for precision work that is typically
required in industry. They all have these features:
All level bases are made from the finest quality seasoned cast iron and are precision-
machined on the reference surface. Nonmachined surfaces have an attractive, black
wrinkle finish. An involute longitudinal groove between the bearing flats for
accurate seating on round work. This groove has a special involute design,
permitting better centering and greater capacity to handle larger rounds. Groove
and bearing flats are machined together for maximum accuracy.

                      Starrett catalog number 6.
Starrett screw pitch gages are among the most useful tools in any mechanic's
toolbox. They quickly determine the pitch of various threads. These gages consist of
a substantial steel case with a number of folding leaves at both ends, each leaf
having teeth corresponding to a definite pitch, marked on each leaf. Starrett screw
pitch gages are available in a wide range of sizes with different numbers of leaves
in various pitch ranges with which to gage. The screw pitch gage features a locking
device at both ends of the case, so leaves can be securely locked in position for
use. Leaves have a special narrow design, permitting checking internal threads in
nuts, etc., as well as external threads.

                      1824 Scriber, Starrett $7.10
                      Starrett hand scriber.
                      Starrett catalog number 70A.
The handle is of steel, knurled, and nickel plated. The scriber point is steel,
properly hardened and finely tapered so that the location of the point is not
obscured. The scriber is held firmly in the handle by a knurled chuck and when not
in use can be reversed, telescoped into the handle, and locked by the chuck. The
                      hexagon head prevents rolling.
The scriber point is shipped reversed in the handle so the point is protected.

1840 Telescoping Gage Set, Starrett $99.00
                      Starrett telescoping gage set
                      Starrett catalog number S579GZ.
Range: Four gages, 5/16” to 2-1/8".
Starrett telescoping gages are used for determining the true size of holes, slots, and
recesses up to 2-1/8" (54 mm). The ends of both contacts are hardened and ground
to a radius to allow proper clearance on the smallest hole the gage will enter.
These tools must be slightly "rocked" in the hole being measured to ensure that the
tool is on the proper diameter before it is locked and withdrawn. The final hole size
is obtained by measuring over the gage contacts with a micrometer.
The No. 579 Series telescoping gages have handles that are rigidly attached to the
contact plungers and are automatically self-centering. Also, the No. 579 gages have
                      two telescoping contacts.
The handles are approximately 2-3/8" (60 mm) long.
Constant spring tension gives uniform contact pressure and both plungers are easily
                      locked at any desired setting.

                      Starrett Wiggler Center Finder.
                      Starrett catalog number S828.
The wiggler center finder and four different attachments adapt to countless
applications and are readily interchangeable. The attachments are snapped in the
chuck without removing the collet nut and are clamped by a ball swivel-joint, which
permits adjustment to an angular position or true concentricity.
With the pointed shank, working centers can be quickly and accurately located.
Spring tension on the ball of the point permits guiding the point to true
concentricity so that the work can be brought into perfect alignment with the
                      machine spindle.
The ball contact is useful in locating work by first bringing the contact (ball
diameter 0.250" or 6.3 mm) against the work, a slot, hole, shoulder, or end, and
indexing the work to the desired position relative to the spindle.
The disc contact, which has a small disc at the end (0.100"/2.5 mm) diameter,
permits use in more confined areas such as slots or shallow holes.
The wiggler shank is 0.375" diameter.

The wiggler center finder and pointed shank quickly and accurately locates working
                      centers.
Spring tension on the ball of the point permits guiding the point to true
concentricity so that the work can be brought into perfect alignment with the
                      machine spindle.
The attachment is snapped in the chuck without removing the collet nut and is
clamped by a ball swivel-joint, which permits adjustment to an angular position or

Machine Shop Projects by South Bend Lathe Works.
This was produced as a companion to "How to Run a Lathe" to teach students in
vocational and industrial schools basic machining skills.
You get 34 different plans from a very simple nail set to 1/4 hp gasoline engine.
Each project comes with a "blueprint" and a step-by-step list of operations. For
instance, step 5 might say "Face one end only." You're expected to refer to "How to
Run a Lathe" to get details on how to do that.
Projects include: lathe mandrel, lathe centers, spur center, 1" bolt and nut, screw
drive, machinist's clamp, clamp lathe dog, boring bar for lathe, milling arbor for

Machine Shop Trade Secrets, A Guide to Manufacturing Machine Shop Practices
                        By James A. Harvey
                        311 Pages
There are many reference books on the market today, starting with the Machinery's
Handbook, that provide much of the technical and reference information a
machinist or engineer may ever need. It is difficult, however, to find a book that
provides practical “how to” information that can immediately be put to use to
improve ones machining skills, craftsmanship and productivity.
The purpose of this book is to fill that void and provide concrete suggestions that
can help you think and produce like an experienced machinist. If that’s what
you’re looking for, you’ve hit the mother load.
This book is primarily directed toward the conventional tool room machinist
working in a small shop environment. Many CNC machining suggestions are also
included. By virtue of pricing and delivery competition, most small shops have to
be very good at what they do. You will find that the equipment and techniques
referred to in these pages are commonly seen and used in small machine shops.

                        1930s.
Most of the booklets cover automotive topics, including grinding valves, truing
brake drums and finishing pistons. The booklets on cutting screw threads and
grinding cutting tools are probably worth the price of the book.

This video, by Jose Rodriguez, provides a four hour introduction to the use of the
                         mini lathe.
Jose says: "This one has been a hot topic in recent months on the Net, the various
metalworking newsgroups and mailing lists. Now all of your questions, doubts and
anything else you may have been wandering about this tool will be answered in a
four hour, no holds barred video presentation. The tape will begin with a full tour
of the tool, followed by a complete machining presentation that should put to rest
any fears or reservations you may have had about this tool once and for all!!! Not
only will you be shown just about every basic machining cut a lathe is able to do,
you will also see a complete "milling on the lathe " demonstration adapting the Taig
vertical milling slide to the mini lathe's cross slide. An extremely informative
presentation that will also double as a perfect machining mini-course."

This video, by Jose Rodriguez, provides complete instructions for building a milling
                         machine.
Jose says: "In this nearly 12 hour long video marathon, you will witness the
seemingly impossible! Observe the author as he builds a fully operating and capable
80 pound variable speed milling machine with existing TAIG Micro lathe components
and readily available stock aluminum material. A commercial heavy duty X & Y
milling table is utilized to complete the project. This is definitively not a "TOY" but
a complete milling center that will outperform just about anything in its class. For a
total expenditure of less than $300. You too could have a tool that will perform
better than milling machines costing more than twice as much. This video will take
you through every step from its initial conception and planning to and beyond its
very successful conclusion in painstaking detail so that you too will be able to easily
duplicate this achievement! As an extra bonus, you will be treated to a fully
narrative and visual step by step presentation on the building of a 60:1 geared
dividing head that with the addition of a simple shop made indexing accessory will
allow it to divide anything into as many as 21,600 equal divisions and for that
matter, any other number divisible into that. You will also learn how to easily cut
perfectly fitting dovetailed sliding joints with the simplest of equipment. These two
items alone would be worth the price of this video set. See how to produce a
professional quality engraved dial with nothing more than a small lathe ( TAIG ).
You will see each component being worked, fitted and assembled as the unit is
magically transformed more and more into a "REAL" milling machine. The final two
hours or so will be devoted to a full battery of milling operations performed on real
components that make up part of the geared dividing head including other milling
goodies. During the filming of the final milling tests, cuts were routinely taken on
6061-T6 alloy to depths of over 90 thou with a common imported 1/4" diameter
four flute end mill. We do not recommend that you routinely cut to those depths
but it sure is nice to be able to so when needed.
This a definite "MUST" for anyone who has grown tired of using alternative milling
methods but either is not ready to invest the big bucks for a commercially available
bench top milling machine or simply not satisfied with what’s presently available
                         out there.

1713 Video: Building a Spindle Gauge for the Mini Lathe $28.00
This video, by Jose Rodriguez, provides a 2 hour study on how to build a spindle
gauge to check the size of adapters and other accessories you make to fit the
                         spindle of your lathe.
Jose says: "Make all the spindle accessories you will need for your lathe with a
simple, easy to make spindle gauge. This tape will take you through a full two hour,
detailed demonstration on how to make a precision spindle gauge directly on your 7
x 10 that you can then use to machine matching spindle tooling not presently
available for this lathe. All this without having to remove the chuck! You will need
to remove it only once in the beginning to take two initial micrometer
measurements for the diameter and thickness of the mounting back plate / flange.
The author has adapted a four jaw chuck for it, has made a slotted face plate, a
driving catch plate and dog clamp and is presently working on a collet chuck with
frontal collet closer that will directly mount to the spindle. A must have for those
wishing they could have more spindle tooling than just the three jaw chuck the
                         lathe comes equipped with!"

1932 Video: Make a Miniature Boring Head $25.00
This video, by Jose Rodriguez, provides complete instructions for making a
                         miniature boring head.
Jose says: "Watch the author as he builds a fully operational and capable boring
head. In this almost two hour video you will learn in full detail how to make a
boring head with micrometer adjustment feature with very little material and
equipment. In fact, although the author uses his home made milling machine to
build it, it could be easily built using the TAIG lathe plus milling attachment. You
will see the dovetailed components being built from layout to finish. The unit takes
1/4" shank shop made boring bars which you will see as well, although commercial
3/8" bring bars could be substituted instead. The idea here was to make a miniature
version of a commercially available boring head complete will all the normal
features found on them, but only about 1/2 the overall size. Small machines such as
the Taig Micro mill and Sherline milling machines will vibrate when a full size boring
head is installed with the head offset even a small amount. This unit is small,
compact, but extremely strong and stiff. This will be evident at the end of the
video during the actual test, boring out of an existing bore on a work piece. The
head itself is adjustable in thousands of an inch with its graduated screw and its
male dovetail is kept snug or fully locked during cutting by three gib screws. This
unit has a real brass gib rather than the usual practice of slitting the female
dovetail to create a pseudo gib. All in all, for the cost of a pack of cigarettes you
make a great addition to your tool shelf that will perform for you for a lifetime."

1891 Video: Making Gears the Easy Way $38.00
This video, by Jose Rodriguez, provides a four hour introduction to making gears.
Jose says: "Have you forgone the pleasure of building a small geared engine simply
because the thought of having to cut your own gears brings a shiver down your
metalworking spine? Even if can muster up the nerve, you realize that so called
involute gear cutters cost an arm and a leg. Then you need a set of eight cutters to
enable you to cut the entire range of teeth for 12 to Rack. The cost in cutters alone
can reach well over $200 before you even begin thinking about arbors to hold them.
It’s no wonder many of us will simply go to the nearest gear vendor and put down
$50 -$60 for a pair of brass spur gears.
In this video you will learn the secrets of the HOB. You will not only learn how to
use a hob, but you will also learn how to build one from scratch right on your small
to medium size lathe and small milling machine. For a total cost of about $3 in
materials you can make a hob that will not only enable you to EASILY make any
number tooth spur gear as well as even a worm and worm gear.
You will be amazed at how simple gear making can be!
You can make any diametral pitch hob by simply following the easy Diametral Pitch
chart that is included as part of the video. The video shows a 1/10 pitch spiral and
straight hob being made and then used to make gears of various diameters. You will
not need to compute anything. All basic diameters for gear blanks for gears of any
numbers of teeth will also be included in the package. If you rather use a calculator
to figure out diameters, easy formulas for that are also included.
Once you have used a HOB to cut a gear you will wonder why you would use
                         anything else!"

Jose says: "Are you tired of avoiding machine projects simply because you do not
own or have access to a milling machine? Learn some of the secrets to successful
milling techniques utilizing your existing lathe as well as a drill press. I know what
you must be thinking. This guy must be crazy! Milling on a drill press? I, as well as
none other than Rudy Kouhoupt, have been doing just that very thing for years now
with entirely good results in finish as well as dimensional accuracy. You will also
see the Taig Micro Lathe being put trough its paces milling a workpiece held on the
cross slide as well as with the vertical milling accessory. See the Taig with the
externally mounted modified micro drill press to convert it into a miniature 3 in 1
machining center. See the 7 x 10 mini lathe in conjunction with the Taig Vertical
Milling accessory performing milling cuts with hardly an effort. We finish the
presentation with the 8" modified drill press performing milling on a rough block of
stock held on a great little shop made milling vice. This the only drill press with a
micrometer operated locking spindle. See it being used and you too will marvel at
                         its simplicity.
After viewing this tape, you too should be well on your way to the pleasures of
milling without having to own a milling machine."

most ambitious project undertaken by the author. It features his shopmade
modelmaker's variable speed milling machine. The video is basically a complete
basic milling operations course but rather than boring the viewer with dozens of
unrelated procedures, you get to see the author produce a dovetailed tool block for
his quick change tool system he designed for his 7 x 10 mini lathe. This is a four
hour presentation that will leave you asking for more, even after four fun packed
                         hours."

* Carbide is cemented carbide; HSS is high speed steel.
At the speeds and feeds that most of us home shop machinists use, high speed
steel will provide a better surface finish than carbide inserts. In other words,
you can do better work with high speed steel.
For roughing cuts, use carbide. For finish cuts, use high speed steel. Because
these tools are indexable, you can simply change the insert, and resume
cutting at the same tool position.
