2008

After a research phase looking at new materials and emerging design
trends for 2008, we designed a range of smartphone concepts. In
particular - contrasting materials and dramatic lighting effects were
important and built into the mockups for presentation.

Leading a team of internal designers, in collaboration with design
team in Seoul - and project managing external design consultancy
ChauhanStudio - to develop 9 new concept proposals for emerging markets
devices.
Research into user needs and requirements in these markets and managing
the creation of 3 new design languages.

Detailed design engineering of SPX5 SportDrive autopilot.
Analysis of mechanical design integrity, working cross-discipline
with electronics, hardware and software, production, supply-chain and
manufacturing. Tooling approval, component testing (FEM, reliability
approval and field testing).

WIRELESS TRANSDUCER
2006

Engineering feasibility proposal of new solar wireless device for
monitoring wind speed and direction. Architectures layout work, concept
proving, tooling and BOM costings, power consumption calculations using
internal electro-mech team and Sagentia Consultancy for out-sourced
technical component study.

I wanted to test myself to see if I could build beautiful things
physically with my hands at a completely different scale to that
I had worked on previously.
So I took a 9 month craftsman’s course in Small Yacht Construction, and
then spent some time working on a 100” ship conversion project.

HANDS-ON FREELANCING
2005

Hands-on design and build for a conversion project of a 1950’s trawler
into a classic barquentine Tall Ship “Pelican of London”.

I was involved in 2d and 3d design, layout for interiors and putting
into practice with on-site construction.

I managed the project for finding reclaimation pieces and suggested
interior design themes to the Project owner.

FURNITURE DESIGN
2005

Concept proposals for new table design. The idea to make a wide span
with minimal structural support, to give thinnest table possible.
Using laminated ply or GRP.
Glass top would be photochromic for on/off viewability of drawer
contents.

CRAFTSMANSHIP
2005

Learning how to make classic boats using old craftsman techniques such
as hand lofting after learning to read the lines, cold moulding, frame
construction, steaming and laminating. Using mahogany, oak, bronze and
GRP.

It was fantastic not needing to rely on CAD to create something
beautiful. I project managed and built my own classic dinghy.

I joined Nokia when they were No.2 and trying to catch Motorola.
First I worked in the mechanics group, designing and detailing
handsets. I moved to Nokia Design in 2001, firstly as engineering
support and then as design lead on ID projects throughout Europe
and Japan.
When I left Nokia was No.1 and Nokia Design had just won red dot
“design team” of the year 2003.

2004

               Slimline 3G candy-bar phone with E-Series
               heritage design language. Iconic lines and new
               “light-up” call indicator built into keymat.

               Lead design on this project based in
               Farnborough but working on-site with Salo
               sales/marketing  and   engineering  group.

6260 Classic fold
2003

Innovative camcorder-style fold-phone with Classic design language. A
response to senior management calls for a new form-factor Nokia fold-
phone. Code-named “lightning”, this project with a new swivelling hinge
was from concept to production in just under 1 year.

Lead design on this project based in Farnborough but working on-site
with Copenhagen sales/marketing and engineering group.

3650 3G Imaging
2002

The first mass-market 3G imaging phone from Nokia. It had a teen-focused
design language with user-changeable front and rear cover. The biggest
challenge was to get sales/marketing acceptance for the totally unique
circular keymat.

Leading the design integration on this project based in Farnborough
working with the industrial designer to champion design integrity into
the engineering team.

7600 3G Fashion
2001

Managing the link between design and engineering on this project with
the Farnborough CE team. Working together with the industrial designer.
I completed all the Class A surfacing on this high-style handset.

Concepting
2000

As part of the annual concepting round I was tasked to design new type
of smartphone with value added form factors. A tablet device with a
rotating camera for video-conference, and a qwerty tablet with 180
degree movement.

Mechanics
1997-99

I was in the Mechanics R&D team for 3 years. In this time I designed
mouldings, flexi-circuits and keymats, and worked for 9 months on
qualification of paint systems - approving the first colour covers for
Nokia devices.
