World Peace and The Most Prestigious Karate Event in the World
The most prestigious Karate Event in the world comes to the beautiful campus of Manhattan College in New York City. The
competition will be fierce, with over 1500 of the most talented karate fighters from over 150 countries. The Japan Shotokan Karate
Association - USA, will host this exciting international karate event. The competitors, their coaches and families will be provided
with top-notch accommodations at Manhattan College (including three gourmet meals per day). Over 50 different theme tours of
NYC and its surrounding attractions will be offered, and participants will be encouraged to interact with their counterparts from all
the other countries via cultural theme dinner parties and activities every night of the week. The theme of this year’s event is
WORLD PEACE. It is our hope to promote a sense of international brotherhood through the practice of Karate, strong respectful
competition, and the development of international friendships and professional connections.

This week long event will begin with the JSKA MASTERS CAMP. Numerous seminars will be taught by 10 of the most talented and
charismatic karate masters from all over the world. The Masters Camp is open to everyone. Participants will have the opportunity to
train in a very intimate environment where they will receive personal attention from karate’s greatest masters. The Masters Camp
will culminate with a question and answer session where students will be able to ask the masters anything they like. To be in the
presence of 10 Karate masters for an entire week is literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The 2006 JSKA WORLD KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP eliminations will begin on Friday morning and continue through Saturday
afternoon. At the same time, we will hold the 2006 JSKA MARTIAL ARTS and FITNESS EQUIPMENT TRADE SHOW. Companies
will have the opportunity to display, demonstrate and directly market their products to the anticipated 6000 athletes, coaches,
athletic trainers, physical therapists and spectators in attendance.

Children and Special Needs Divisions
The 2006 JSKA WORLD KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP will not only showcase world class athletes, but it will also feature divisions
for children and those with special needs. This will probably be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them to work with Olympic-
level Karate athletes and talk to them about their hard training, clean lifestyle and the importance of a good education. There will
also be a FREE SEMINAR ON THE DANGERS OF DRUG USE. Karate is for everyone, including individuals with special needs.
Master Gichin Funakoshi said, “The ultimate aim of the art of karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of character of
its participants.” To our knowledge, this is the first legitimate World Karate Championship in history to offer a division for those with
developmental disabilities.

Rare Masters Demonstrations
The event will climax with MUSICAL PERFORMANCES from some of the biggest names in the music business,
SPECTACULAR DEMONSTRATIONS from the Karate masters and the best Karate demonstration teams in the world. This will
lead us to THE FINALS OF THE 2006 JSKA WORLD KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP. The top 4 athletes in each of the Black Belt
divisions will fight for the title of WORLD KARATE CHAMPION! As in our past World Championships, many famous VIP guests
will be in attendance. These guests will include actors, actresses, fighters, musicians, politicians and of course many famous
martial artists. Naturally, many of the VIP’s will be available to sign autographs and take photos with their fans.

After the event, we will hold the JSKA INTERNATIONAL AWARDS BANQUET on the flight deck of the U.S.S. INTREPID
AIRCRAFT CARRIER. Prominent Instructors, Masters and VIP guests will be honored with international awards for their
hard work and dedication to their art and other altruistic endeavors.

The Biggest Event of its Kind
The 2002 JSKA World Karate Championship was held in Lubeck, Germany and was attended by well over 1000 competitors and
3000 spectators. The 2004 JSKA World Karate Championship was held in Pretoria, South Africa and was attended by well over
1500 competitors and 5000 spectators. As there will be numerous other events, activities and attractions associated with the 2006
JSKA WORLD KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP and New York City is a far greater tourist attraction than the last two host cities, we fully
expect the 2006 JSKA WORLD KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP to be a much larger event than the last two. We feel confident that the
2006 JSKA WORLD KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP will be attended by well over 1500 athletes and 7000 spectators.

For more information please check out our website: www.JSKAUSA.com or contact the
Japan Shotokan Karate Association - USA at (646) 339-9300 or JSKAUSA@aol.com.

Kata Rules:
Individual Shotokan Kata Division:
The usual JKA/JSKA standards will apply for Shotokan Kata. The particulars will
be reviewed in the judges/referees meetings. Pee Wee’s, Youths and Cadets will
perform only TOKUI KATA (Kata of Choice) and may repete the same Kata in
additional rounds if necessary.
Advanced Senior & Veteran Shotokan Kata Competitors will perform both
compulsory (“SHITEI”) and free selection (“TOKUI”) Kata. The first round of these
divisions will be decided by the FLAG SYSTEM. The SHITEI KATA to be performed
will be determined by the role of a six sided dice. The 6 compulsary SHITEI KATA
are: Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, Heian Yondan, Heian Godan and
Tekki Shodan. From the 2nd round on, competitors will receive a score for doing the
TOKUI Kata of their choice. All acceptable versions of the traditional Shotokan Katas
are acceptable. Once a competitor has done a TOKUI Kata, it can NOT be repeated
in the remaining elimination rounds. Competitors may repete their TOKUI KATA
in the finals.

Team Shotokan Kata Division:
Pee Wee’s, Youth and Cadet Kata Teams will perform only TOKUI KATA
(Kata of Choice) and may repeat the same Kata in additional rounds if necessary.
Advanced Senior & Veteran Shotokan Kata Teams will perform both compulsory
(“SHITEI”) and free selection (“TOKUI”) Kata. The first round of these Team Kata
divisions will be SHITEI KATA to be determined by the role of a six sided dice.
As in the individual Kata divisions, the 6 compulsary SHITEI KATA are: Heian
Shodan, Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, Heian Yondan, Heian Godan and Tekki
Shodan. From the 2nd round on, competitors will do the TOKUI Kata of their choice.
All acceptable versions of the traditional Shotokan Katas are acceptable. Once a
team has done a TOKUI Kata, it can NOT be repeated in the remaining elimination
rounds. Teams may repeat their TOKUI KATA in the finals. All team Kata rounds will
be scored, not flagged. Countries may enter as many Kata teams as they like,
however a competitor MAY NOT be on more than one Kata Team.

Japanese & Okinawan Karate-Do Kata Divisions:
As Shotokan Kata comes from Okinawan Kata and both Abe
Sensei and Casale Sensei support the practice of Okinawan Kata
for Shotokan Karateka, this World Championship will have
separate divisions for both Individual and Team Okinawan Kata.
Sensei Harry Cook (7th Dan Goju & 7th Dan Shotokan) will serve as
the Chief Referee of the Japanese/Okinawan Kata Divisions.
Sensei Cook is one of the world’s leading authorities on Kata,
Bunkai and the History of Karate-Do. Shotokan Karateka are
encouraged to compete in these Kata Divisions with an Okinawan
Kata. Shotokan versions of traditional Karate-Do Kata are not
permitted in these divisions. All other acceptable versions of
traditional Katas are acceptable. There is NO SHITEI KATA in
these divisions. All individual competitors and teams will perform
their Kata separately and receive a straight score.
Karateka performing Katas from the following styles will
compete in these divisions: Shorin Ryu, Shorei Ryu, Goju

Kumite Rules:
Sanbon Kumite Rules: (Jodan & Chudan)
Individual Pee Wee and Youth Kumite Divisions will perform prearranged Sanbon Kumite. The following format will be followed
EXACTLY. Aka & Shiro competitors will bow and enter the ring. Shiro side will attack first with Jodan Oi Zuki. Shiro will step back
into left side downward block and clearly announce “JODAN !!!”. Aka side will respond “HAI JODAN !!!”. Shiro will then step forward
with Oi Zuki 3X. Aka side will step back 3X with Jodan Age Uke and counter with Gyaku Zuki immediately after the 3rd attack.
Both sides will pause for a moment and step back into the Yoi position. The same format will be repeted with Aka attacking Shiro.
Immediately following this, the same format will be repeted with Chudan Oi Zuki Attack, Chudan Soto Uke Defense and Gyaku
Zuki Counter Attack. All particulars will be reviewed in the judge/referee training and in the meetings with Abe Sensei, Amos Sensei
and the Chief Medical Referee, Dr. Ilija Jorga.

Ippon Kumite Rules: (Jodan, Chudan & Mae Geri)
Cadets will perform prearranged Ippon Kumite (Jodan & Chudan Oi Zuki and Mae Geri). The same format will be followed as in
Sanbon Kumite, except there will be only 1 attack. For the Mae Geri Attack, the defender will Tai Sabaki to the side, block with
Gedan Barai and counter punch with Gyaku Zuki. All particulars will be reviewed in the judge/referee training and in the meetings
with Abe Sensei, Amos Sensei and the Chief Medical Referee, Dr. Ilija Jorga.

Traditional Ippon Shobu Rules:
Juniors, Seniors and Veterans will compete using the usual JKA/JSKA Ippon Shobu rules and standards. All particulars will be
reviewed in the judge/referee training and in the meetings with Abe Sensei, Amos Sensei and the Chief Medical Referee, Dr. Ilija Jorga.

Team Kumite: Traditional Ippon Shobu Rules:
Cadets, Juniors, Seniors and Veterans will have the opportunity to compete as a 5 man or 5 woman Team using the usual
JKA/JSKA Ippon Shobu rules and standards. All particulars will be reviewed in the judge/referee training and in the meetings with
Abe Sensei, Amos Sensei and the Chief Medical Referee, Dr. Ilija Jorga. Countries may enter as many Ippon Shobu Kumite
teams as they like, however a competitor MAY NOT be on more than one Ippon Shobu Kumite Team.

WKF Rules - Individual Kumite Divisions:
Cadets, Juniors, Seniors and Veterans will have the opportunity to compete under both Ippon Shobu and the WKF Rules.
It is necessary for Traditional Karateka to be well versed in fighting under both sets of rules (Ippon Shobu and W.K.F. rules).
And so, this World Championship will have separate divisions for those wishing to fight under W.K.F. rules as well. We encourage
black belts to fight twice under both sets of rules to gain this most important experience. The way we have the divisions set up,
it will give advanced competitors the opportunity to fight in 4 different divisions (Individual/Team Ippon Shobu and Individual/Team
W.K.F. rules). We understand that many traditional Karateka dislike the W.K.F. rules, but there is no denying that W.K.F. Style Kumite
is the Olympic style of Kumite and it certainly looks like it’s here to stay. If you are unfamiliar with the WKF Rules of Kumite please
review them at: www.WKF.net All particulars will be reviewed in the judges/referees meetings and in the meeting with the Chief
Referee of the WKF Kumite Divisions and the Chief Medical Referee, Dr. Ilija Jorga. Because this is a traditional Karate competition
and our time is limited by an enormous amount of competitors, all Kumite (Ippon Shobu and WKF Rules) will be open weight class.

WKF Rules - Team Kumite Divisions:
Cadets, Juniors, Seniors and Veterans will have the opportunity to compete as a 5 man or 5 woman Team using the WKF rules
and standards. All particulars will be reviewed in the judges/referees meetings and in the meeting with the Chief Referee of the WKF
Kumite Divisions and the Chief Medical Referee, Dr. Ilija Jorga. Countries may enter as many WKF Kumite Teams as they like,
however a competitor MAY NOT be on more than one WKF Kumite Team.

A team of 3 Competitors will perform a
CREATIVE SELF DEFENSE ROUTINE based on
traditional Kata movements. The routine must be
between 60-90 seconds in length. If the routine
is any shorter or longer, the team will suffer
serious penalties. Embu Teams are encouraged
to be very creative and make their routines as
exciting as possible.

The use of weapons is not permitted. The Embu
divisions will take place on thin mats to make
throws and take-downs safer for the competitors.

These mats will be available throughout the week
for Embu Teams to practice on.

If you/your students have never done Embu
before, we encourage you to put your
creativity to the test and have some fun.
Coaches and Senseis should have all their
Kata teams also compete in Embu. The best
teams will be asked to demonstrate their
routines during the masters demonstration for
the T.V. cameras. You might make it to
international cable T.V. !!!

How and When to Register:
PLEASE !!!
E-Mail Sensei Casale as soon as possible with a list of all the people in your delegation. Naturally, as we are so far away
from the World Championship, your delegation will change and hopefully grow. Please send us periodic updates so we
can have a sense of our numbers.

Your final group list is due on July 1st 2006. We do not need any payments in advance. We only need to
know how many people you have, the type of accommodations they desire and what divisions they will be competing in.
Everyone will officially register and pay the fees when they arrive here in NYC. Feel free to call Sensei Casale any day
between the hours of 9am and 3pm (Eastern Standard Time/NY) at: 646-339-9300. He will be happy to answer any of
your questions and discuss any of your concerns.

The new JSKA-USA website will go live within the next week. You’ll find all the latest World Championship information
there, so please check the website regularly. We “MAY” decide to set up an online registration system. If so, you will
receive another e-mail giving you the details.

Accommodations and Meals Info:
All participants will be staying on the beautiful campus of Manhattan College. We have arranged for
your accommodations and 3 meals per day for roughly HALF THE PRICE of staying and eating in
Manhattan at a good hotel in a good location during this peak tourist season. I have gotten numerous
inquires about other accommodations. You “may” find a hotel and 3 meals of unknown quality for the
same price or maybe even a little less, but I assure you, these hotels are very poor quality, are far
from the College with poor transportation and are in VERY BAD NEIGHBORHOODS. The few dollars
you may save on poor accommodations, you will definitely spend on transportation. We have done
over a year of VERY CAREFUL AND EXTENSIVE RESEARCH and have looked into ALL the options.
Everyone staying at the university is not only the best financial deal, but it will help to foster a sense
of brotherhood among the participants from all over the world. In addition to this, everyone will be able
to enjoy the parties each night without the worry of an hour or more of expensive travel.
And so, EVERYONE will be staying at the university.
The university has a few different types of accommodations. ALL ARE EXCELLENT !
Sensei Pretorius (Masters Camp Instructor from South Africa), Sensei Amos (Masters Camp Instructor
from USA) and Sensei Moran (Legend Video – U.K.) took the time to come visit Manhattan College
to see the facilities. They were all VERY IMPRESSED and VERY PLEASED with the quality,
atmosphere and prices. Please feel free to contact them to ask their most respected opinions.

Video/Photo Pass:
As this is a large international event that will be video taped by E.S.P.N. and Legend Video, there are
numerous legalities and associated expenses involved. It has become customary at national and
international events to charge between $200. and $500. US Dollars for a video/photo pass.

Anyone possessing either a still or video camera at the event of ANY TYPE is required to purchase
a video/photo pass. The video/photo pass is only $50. for the entire event. We priced the Video/
Photo pass so low because we don’t want to hit people over the head and we hope that less people
will try to cheat. Because of this, we will be VERY STRICT about the Video/Photo Pass. If
“ANYONE” (without exception) is caught video taping or taking photos without a pass, they will be
EJECTED from the arena and forbidden to return for the duration of the event. We ask that you
please follow the rules, and properly support the World Championship.
