Won Life’s vision is to provide excellent, Christian service in the areas of health and education to
the community of Fisantekraal.

We believe that individually and corporately we should bring restoration and transformation by caring for the poor
and vulnerable. Through our services, we aim to instil a sense of hope in the lives of the people of Fisantekraal.


In 1999 Fisantekraal consisted of 300 people living in shacks. After being made aware of the plight of the
squatters at Fisantekraal, a group of compassionate people from Urban Edge Church commenced with the
provision of primary health care. A strategy was formulated for the construction of a permanent clinic from which
services could be provided.

Initially a satellite clinic was constructed using converted shipping containers. This was a temporary structure
located at the local farm school. Here, the Social Action Group co-operated fully with the Durbanville Clinic. In
effect the satellite clinic facilitated the extension of the services of the Durbanville Clinic to Fisantekraal. We
supplemented the staff from the Durbanville Clinic with our own volunteer sister for the first year. Services at the
satellite clinic were provided every second week.

Soon after our involvement began, plans were announced for the construction of a RDP Housing Scheme at
Fisantekraal. In addition to the construction of 1 250 houses, plans were drawn up for the construction of a
primary school to replace the existing farm school. After operating for one year, the satellite clinic was closed as
a consequence of the demolition of the farm school. During this process Won Life took shape as an organisation
to serve the health needs of the expanding community at Fisantekraal.

A new strategy encompassing the building of a new satellite clinic was formulated. It was Won Life’s stated aim
to combat HIV/AIDS and TB, using the clinic as a base. Won Life partnered with local government and the
Department of Health to appropriate land for the construction of the clinic. This process was accomplished and a
new clinic was constructed in the centre of the township by the end of 2001. In April 2002 the Minister of Health
for the Western Cape officiated at the opening of our new clinic.

By the end of 2002 Won Life had secured a firm foundation for its medical operations in Fisantekraal and was in a
position to implement the second phase of its vision, the provision of preprimary education from a purpose built
structure. Won Life employed two ladies from Fisantekraal to commence training as preschool teachers at a make
shift school operating from the clinic grounds. The teachers were enrolled at Cape Town College for a remote
learning, educare course.

With time the preschool became more formalised with classes running from 8am to 1pm. Facilities were
progressively improved with the classes being held under cover between two containers.

In March of 2007 we completed the construction of a larger facility, called the Urban Life Centre, where 120
children now receive Early Childhood Development tuition. We work closely with the Western Cape Department of
Education to provide the required Grade R curriculum. At present, we are the only registered Grade R facility in
the community.

A Board of 8 members governs Won Life. Seven of these members are volunteers and have voting power. The
Director also sits on this board but is also a staff member and therefore does not vote. Three of our Board
members make up the school’s Governing Body.

Our director oversees the running of both the Clinic and ELC on a day to day basis. The Clinic Manager oversees
the more detailed operations at our Clinic facility, while our Principal oversees the detailed operations at our ELC.

Won life has 16 staff members between the Clinic and ELC.


Our clinic serves as a base from where we can assist the community through the provision of health care. The
following are our critical focus areas: Paediatric Primary Healthcare (immunizations, ORT, etc), HIV/AIDS
awareness & Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT), TB treatment, the Nutrition Supplement Programme
(NSP), basic wound care, treatment of common illnesses and family planning.

As a result of unemployment and socio-economic problems the majority of this community cannot afford even
basic health care.


The World Health Organization states that it is every individual’s right to basic health care, irrespective of
affordability. Won Life therefore endeavours to partner with existing government health authorities to provide an
excellent but free medical service to the people of Fisantekraal.


Various activities and services have progressively been added as the clinic has developed and grown. Won Life is
proud to serve the community of Fisantekraal by means of a multi-faceted approach. All services are aimed at
the combating of HIV /Aids and other related diseases

    •   Primary Paediatric Health Care

    Primary Health Care for children takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays. Won Life provides a nursing sister, a
    nurse from the community and an administrative staff member to ensure necessary record keeping.
    Medication is supplied by the Durbanville Clinic. On the odd occasion however, Won Life has needed to
    supplement medicines due to a shortage of state supplies. This co-operation serves as a model of
    collaboration between the State Health Services and a NGO (Won Life). The Fisantekraal Community Clinic
    has been subject to inspection and audit by the Department of Health.

    •   HIV/AIDS Awareness, Counselling & Education

    As previously stated, the entire project is focussed on disease prevention and health education. To this end,
    Won Life runs a wide-ranging HIV/Aids programme. Voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) is available at
    our clinic using the ‘Rapid Test’. HIV/Aids events are held allowing us to counsel, test and educate large
    numbers of the community on a single day. Education aimed at the prevention of HIV/Aids takes place
    through various forums such as the local school, via home visits and during routine visits to the clinic. We are
    also in the process of extending our HIV/Aids programme by starting a support group.

    •   TB Treatment

    We provide treatment to patients suffering from Tuberculosis and monitor them daily to ensure they do not
    default in taking their medication. TB is one of the most common diseases and is treatable if patients
    consistently take their medication. Unfortunately there are many who default which causes the development
    of stronger stains of the virus and the patient is less likely to recover. TB is also one of the most common
    secondary infections in those who have HIV/Aids and therefore the need for such treatment is vital.

    •   Basic hygiene education

    Basic hygiene and sickness prevention education for community members e.g. oral rehydration, colds and flu
    treatment, wound care. This takes place in the form of public sessions and demonstrations in our patient
    waiting area.

    The clinic has also facilitated various inoculation campaigns e.g. Polio Campaign, Vitamin A, etc.

    •   Nutrition and Soup Kitchen

    The Nutritional Supplement Programme (NSP) is a strict and detailed programme for all patients suffering
    from malnutrition. This includes HIV/AIDS patients, TB sufferers and young children. Children on the MTCT
    (mother-to-child transmission) programme receive milk formula when the state cannot provide.

    Food supplements, generally donated by ABBA, are also handed out to relevant patients until stocks deplete.
    Food parcels, part of our Food Bag Programme are donated through various individuals and are also
    distributed to our TB and HIV/AIDS patients.

    In addition, our soup kitchen at the clinic feeds numerous adults and children 3 days a week.

    •   Clothing Store

    A second hand clothing store operates from the clinic. Funds raised supplement our budget and are used to
    buy medical supplies and food for our soup kitchen. Many of the older items and baby clothes are often
    given away to the very poor or needy patients.


The local community plays a pivotal role in the clinic. The community leaders work closely with the Won Life
leadership to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of the people.

     These are the areas in which we would like to increase our spending. This will allow us to meet the
     growing needs of the community and to have greater impact on the lives of individuals.


The formative years of a child’s life are foundational to all future learning. Children must be prepared in all seven
crucial developmental areas: emotional; intellectual; mental; spiritual; moral; physical and social development;
and growth of children.

As a result of unemployment, poverty, alcohol abuse, AIDS and other socio-economic problems in the past and
present, many of our children have not had exposure to this essential education. This, in turn, has resulted in
many children staying disadvantaged, getting involved with drugs or simply unable to function productively as
part of society.

By providing Early Childhood Development these potential problems will be reduced or avoided altogether,
thereby breaking the cycle of poverty, alcohol abuse and unemployment.

Additional problems faced by our children include learning disabilities, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (F.A.S), impaired
hearing; Attention Deficit Disorder; and many more.


Research has shown that children who have attended two years of pre-school education have a far greater
chance of completing their twelfth year of school successfully. We will therefore provide as many children as is
possible with an Early Childhood Development Programme.


Our daily activities are aimed at the total development of a child.

    •   Physical Development

    Through planned play and creative activities, children develop all their muscle groups. Our children are able
    to develop their large motor skills through various large movement activities.

    Most parents earn less than R1 200.00 a month and are not able to provide adequate meals for their children
    or themselves. Nutrition plays an essential role in all elements of a child’s development. Lack of proper
    nutrition can lead to the child being physically weak, restrict intellectual development as children struggle to
    retain or recall information and socially, children can become anti-social, withdrawn or even aggressive.

    The benefits of a sound nutrition programme are therefore numerous and consequently form a vital part of
    our program. Our children receive two full meals a day and should their family not be able to provide them
    with a snack, we provide this as well.

    •   Emotional Development

    The children feel safe while in the care of our teachers. They have a strict routine; they are well disciplined
    and have very clear boundaries. These factors create a safe environment, which allow children the freedom
    to be themselves and the scope to reach their full potential.

    Expressing Emotions
    Children are taught how to deal with various emotions constructively. Grief, anger, resentment, fear, joy and
    happiness are all part of our lives. Some of these children have no guidelines of how to deal with these
    conflicting emotions. At our early learning centre they are taught that aggression can be managed in a
    positive way and that it need not result in a physical confrontation. We also teach all our children how to deal
    with HIV / AIDS. They are guided through the difficult process of managing their own fear of death, the fear
    of losing a loved one and the fear of becoming infected. We educate our children to be compassionate
    towards fellow children who are not as healthy as they are.

    Emotional & Physical Abuse
    Unfortunately physical and emotional abuse is a cruel reality. We have access to a social worker. Our
    teachers and staff are trained to recognize the signs of emotional and/or physical abuse. We strive to instil a
    sense of self worth in our children. This helps to counteract the negative effect of emotional abuse. They are
    taught what their rights are. They are encouraged to talk to a trusted adult or teacher about abuse. Our
    teachers report any evidence of abuse to the Department of Social Services.

    •   Spiritual Development
    We are a Christian-based school but accept children from all religious and social backgrounds. Children are
    taught Christian values and parents understand that these are the values by which we operate. We believe
    that if children are taught good values at this critical age, they are instilled in them for the rest of their lives.

    •   Social Development
    Children learn how to interact with each other in an acceptable way and, as a result, acquire essential social
    skills. Children are taught to communicate through verbal and non-verbal (body language) interaction. We
    teach the value of sharing, asking permission and courtesy.

    •   Intellectual Development
     We offer our children an education that falls within the requirements of the Department of Education. Some
    of our staff are qualified and some are in the process of completing their Early Childhood Development (ECD)

    •   Mental Development
    Children are taught to reason for themselves. The development of this area can never be underestimated, as
    it will play a pivotal role in determining their future.

    • Moral Development
    A healthy society thrives on basic morality, which encourages law-abiding behaviour and respect for one’s
    fellow man. These skills need to be taught and we therefore include them in our education on a daily basis.


Our school forms part of the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Forum in the Fisantekraal Community. Through
this relationship we are able to assist other crèches run by local members of the community with the registration
of their learning facilities and in acquiring the necessary equipment for them to assist their children in their
