Dear Booksellers, Librarians, and Book Lovers,

I am pleased to present our Spring 2011 list.

As Turner may be new to many of you, I would like to introduce our company.
We are a family-owned publishing company. Turner began publishing niche
titles in 1985. I purchased the company from Mr. Turner in 2002 with a mind
of making it a leading trade publisher. We have made good progress toward
that goal. We were listed as one of the top ten fastest growing publishers in the
US by Publishers Weekly for two years. We publish in the categories of His-
tory, Business, Politics, Fiction, and Lifestyle (Family, Home, and Cooking).

We now have over 1,200 titles in our library. Most of these we have published
ourselves. Some are from acquisitions of other publishing companies. We have five imprints: Turner, Trade
Paper Press, Iroquois Press, Fieldstone Alliance, Ancestry, and titles formerly of Cumberland House that
we are merging under our own imprints.

Many of you may know some of our books, such as the Historic Photos series. These historic photos are in
a large archival book format and have appeared regularly on the local best-seller lists in Bookscan. They
are available in nearly every city and state and are an evergreen mainstay in the local interest section. While
many of you have had success with some of our selected titles, we see great opportunity to share books that
are selling well in one geography with booksellers in other areas that may not know about them.

This year is an important year as we are changing our coverage from in house to some of the best, most
experienced book and gift reps in the field. I hope that change will give you the opportunity to work more
closely with Turner. Personally, I love independent bookstores. I hope you will work with your rep to find
a broad array of titles that your customers will love. And if you ever want to talk about our service, our list,
suggestions, or about the business, call me any time (615) 255-2665. I look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Excerpt from
Come Together

I f you wish to achieve Beatle-level success in your field,
you must first learn to think like a Beatle. Because the
Beatles were no accident. They wanted to be big. Big-
ger than Elvis. Bigger than anyone who went before,
or came after. As you will learn, they took some hard
knocks along the way. But they succeeded. The Fab Four
became a global sensation. For all their missteps, and
there were many, the Beatle business model has stood
the test of time, as one of the most successful of all time.
If you truly think like a Beatle, take heart. You are
in a very small minority. Few aspire to greatness, even
fewer to be the greatest. Most around you are comfort-
able with mediocrity. Others may achieve success, even
set records and receive awards with their performances.
Many simply want to be big enough to receive a regular
paycheck. You, however, will not be satisfied until you
have taken a shot at the top.

“. . . an entertaining and compelling case
for the Beatles as business models.”
—Ken Paulson, Columnist and host of TV’s
    Speaking Freely

As the greatest rock and roll band of all time, the Beatles rocketed to worldwide fame
soon after their 1964 arrival in the United States. Much of their achievement can be
attributed to the unique Beatle sound, but it was more than just the music that cata-
pulted them to the summit of success, and kept them there even after the band ceased
touring and broke apart. How the Beatles both failed and triumphed as businessmen
and the lessons today’s entrepreneurs and business leaders can draw from this unique
journey is the subject of Come Together: The Business Wisdom of the Beatles. Authors
Richard Courtney and George Cassidy recount the band’s many exploits, from its early
struggles in Hamburg to the success of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band and be-
yond, revealing from a business perspective what worked and what didn’t. More than
the music, this book explores what it took to pass the audition.

Bitch, Please!
How Nice Girls
Can Succeed in a
Bitch’s World
Megan Munroe

Megan Munroe is a writer, mother, and nice-girl advocate.
Beginning her career at sixteen on the pageant stage, she went from Miss Teen
USA to Hollywood, where she was cast in several feature films, music videos, the WB’s
Everwood, and countless commercials. At twenty, she left L.A. for her hometown of
Seattle to pay the bills as a certified personal trainer, then hightailed it to Nashville
to pursue a country music career. After recording two albums, becoming a publicist,
and playing famous honky-tonks, it became obvious that all of her life experiences
had prepared her to write Bitch, Please!
As a nice girl in a bitch’s world, Megan has spent over a decade successfully
getting where she has wanted to go. She resides in Seattle with her husband and son.

Excerpt from
Bitch, Please!

F irst things first: Who are we talking about when we
    say bitch?
This can be tricky. As women, we have to admit that
there is a little “bitch” inside of all of us. Even nice girls
can’t deny that we have to constantly tame the little voice
in our heads that says everything is all about us. But what
we must understand is that there is a world of difference
between having a bitchy moment and being a bitch.
One is an emotion; the other is a lifestyle.
Perhaps you’re like me and find yourself wonder-
ing, Why can’t everyone just get along? Unfortunately, the
bitch isn’t going anywhere, and as long as she is en vogue,
we have to find a way to make a way for ourselves, despite
her current trending.
Conversely, nice has become a dirty word for wom-
en. It represents the proverbial doormat. And according
to Web sites like MaliciousBitch.com, it certainly isn’t a
way to behave for “women who just ain’t gonna take it
no more.”
What does the bitch have to be so angry about, any-
way?
Apparently her thong has gotten in a twist over the
last few decades. She is out to prove to the world that be-
ing loud and lewd is the only way to get what she wants.
And the bitch wants it all.

Megan Munroe’s Bitch, Please! delivers a saucy communiqué empowering nice girls
to kick passivity to the curb and instead use the strength of inward kindness to shake
the foundation of the bitch’s empire. Bitch, Please! provides compelling answers to
questions that nice girls often ask, like:
  • How do I handle confrontation with the bitch in the next cubicle?
  • Why does the bitch always seem to get what she wants?
  • If being nice is a good thing, why do I feel like a doormat?
From practical how-to-succeed scenarios to laugh-out-loud lessons, this
humorous yet poignant dialogue has something for every woman. A unique mix
of rhetoric, real-life revelations, kitschy quizzes, and food for thought, this is the
perfect road map for your journey to create a successful life in a nice-girl fashion.

The S.S. United States book is the
first comprehensive work on the ves-

many rarely seen photographs from

lorn and lonely twilight years. Follow

stands as a fitting tribute and celebra-

Murder in the
Heartland
3 Book Series

Harry Spiller
Harry Spiller, author of the Murder in the Heartland series and nine other books, began
his career in public service in 1963 as a recruiter for the United States Marine Corps,
delivering death messages and organizing funerals for those killed in action. A decade
later, he worked as a lawman in Southern Illinois before serving as Sheriff of Williamson
County from 1982 to 1989. In 2008 he retired from his position as an Associate Profes-
sor of Criminal Justice at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois, where he taught
for 28 years.
Spiller received a BS in Criminal Justice, a BA in Political Science, and an MPA at
Southern Illinois University. He resides in West Frankfort, Illinois.

About the series

I n a place where murder isn’t supposed to happen—rural Missouri and Southern Illinois—
deputy sheriff and investigator Harry Spiller learned the hard reality: murder is all around us. It
doesn’t matter whether you live in a big city or small county with farms and churches—murder
is swift and can happen to anyone, anywhere, and any time. All too often, victims fall prey in
places we think are safe to raise our families, where we take walks on hot summer nights, where
our children play in the park or yard without concern, and where we leave our doors unlocked
at night. The Murder in the Heartland series tells the stories of innocent victims in these
seemingly innocent places.
As much as we like to think we’re safe, murder can happen even in rural America—and it does.
Join Spiller in his three-book installment of these horrifying murders in the heartland.

percent of the love, effort, or focus of the other; another year, it may be just the opposite.”
   • “What my father always told me when I was planning my wedding: ‘You have to want to have
a marriage, not just a wedding. Remember the difference.’”
   • “Learn fast that the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence!”
   • “After several years of marriage, there is no way I’m training another husband, so I will just
      keep the one I have!”

Healing
The Essential Guide to Helping
Others Overcome Grief and Loss
Alicia King
Alicia King writes from the unique per-
spective of one who has lost many of
those close to her. Her mother’s death
was suspicious enough to launch a homi-
cide investigation and lengthy legal roller-
coaster. This ultimately led to a sentence
of more than 15 years for her mother’s
boyfriend. During the next eight years she
                          would lose her grandmother, step-father,
step-mother, and father, as well as miscarrying while awaiting her
mother’s boyfriend’s trial. Ms. King currently lives in Franklin, Ten-
nessee, with her husband, Dan, and their two children. She is an
award-winning songwriter, writing mostly for film and TV.

“When I ask people who are grieving what comforts them, nearly every single person gives the
same answer. ‘Someone to listen.’ They don’t want someone to ‘fix’ it. They’re not asking for
answers, spiritual wisdom, or uplifting cliches. Nope, they just need you to be there.”
In Healing: The Essential Guide to Helping Others Overcome Grief and Loss, Alicia King combines
her own wisdom and that of others who have “been there” to offer good advice for those who feel
helpless when it comes to helping the bereaved. Included here are
   • the best ways to get involved on behalf of the grief-stricken
   • how to care for young children in grief
   • interviews with and advice from those who have suffered a loss
   • 20 ways to pay tribute to the beloved
   • 10 things never to say

Above & Beyond
Former Marines Conquer
The Civilian World
by Rudy Socha

Rudy Socha was an enlisted Marine serv-
ing as a Machine Gunner in a Weapons
Platoon with Lima 3/8. He is CEO and
                           writer of a conservation organization
and has one daughter, Kelly, and two
                           step-daughters, Sarah and Kimberly.

In spite of the relatively small number of people passing through its ranks, the Marine Corps produce
a disproportionate share of this country’s leaders. It is because Marines are different from the rest of
the population. They have a different mindset and handle problems in a different manner. Above &
Beyond: Former Marines Conquer the Civilian World profiles 87 former Marines who took that atti-
tude and successfully applied it to the civilian sector. As you read the stories collectively, you will see
a camaraderie of many ethnicities, ages, and personalities—some you already know—that make up
the U.S. Marine Corps. Read these pages and discover why Jim Lehrer of PBS NewsHour says “There
has never been a better testimony to the value of service in the Marine Corps than Above & Beyond.”

100 Miles to Freedom
The Epic Story of the Rescue of
Santo Tomas and the Liberation of
Manila: 1943-1945
by Robert B. Holland
Robert B. Holland enlisted in the U. S. Ma-
rine Corps in 1942 after holding a position
at the San Antonio Air Depot. After the
war, he worked at Mare Island Naval Ship-
yard, Vallejo, California. He then worked
in government procurement for the U. S.
Navy in Washington, D. C., and later for
                          several government contractors across
the United States. He was a recognized
authority on the subject of Government Contract Terminations and
published two comprehensive manuals on this subject. He retired
from Motorola, Inc., in 1986 and formed his own management con-
sulting company. He now resides in Phoenix, Arizona.

In 100 Miles to Freedom, U.S. Marine Bob Holland tells the story of the release of 3,700 American civilian
prisoners of the Japanese at Santo Tomas University Internment Camp in Manila, the Philippines. Until
their miraculous rescue on February 3, 1945, these civilians had been interned for more than three
and a half years. This wartime account is complete with interviews of several prisoners describing
their experiences and hardships in the camp, as well as black-and-white photos depicting Marines
and prisoners during this tumultuous event in history. Discover why Brigadier General Robert E. Galer
says that “through this book, we can know and better appreciate what our proud and dedicated
generation of true Americans did for our country.”

Desert Fire
The Untold Story of the
Air Mission That Cut Off
Hitler's Oil
by John E. Blundell
John E. Blundell is a distin-
                    guished veteran of the 98th
Bomb Group, 9th Air Force, of
World War II. During the Ploes-
ti oil fields mission in Northern
Africa, he was assigned as chief
                    of the Bomber Photographic
                    Section and successfully carried
out his duties of installing pho-
tographic equipment in planes to record the effects of
refinery attacks.

The daring, low-level mission to the oil refineries of Ploesti has long been considered one of
the most significant missions of World War II. The Allies were determined to annihilate the
very source of the fuel which fed the German war machine.
In Desert Fire: The Untold Story of the Air Mission That Cut Off Hitler’s Oil, John Blundell,
distinguished veteran of the 98th Bomb Group, provides not only an insider’s point of view on
the critical mission in Europe and North Africa but also compelling photos of the heroes and
hardships faced by America’s “Force of Freedom,” the 98th Bomb Group. Alma Joyce Hahn
of the Benton Courier describes the book as “an adventure story—you will laugh, you will
wipe a tear away; you will be inspired.”

The Better Brother
Tom & George Custer and the
Battle for the American West
by Roy Bird
                       Historian, fiction writer, professor,
                       and long-time Custer researcher Roy
Bird was born in Herington, Kansas.
A graduate of Kansas State Univer-
sity and Emporia State University, he
has written or edited more than a
dozen books and over two hundred
articles and short stories about Kan-
sas and the American West. Roy is on the adjunct faculty at
Washburn University. He and his family live on a farm near
Auburn, Kansas.

Had Tom Custer not been overshadowed by his famous brother, he might have become one of the
more notable characters and military officers in the American West. Despite two Medals of Honor, his
legendary feud with Rain-in-the-Face, and the shooting scrape with James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok
in Hays City, Tom has taken a back seat to George in the minds of readers and historians—until now.
In his detailed account The Better Brother: Tom and George Custer and the Battle for the American
West, author Roy Bird takes us inside the relationship of two brothers whose intense rivalry in hunting,
military skills, business, and even romance would span from their boyhood farm to their heroic end at
the Little Bighorn, where they were, as always, together.

there were pockets of violence, but life in the West was
no more violent statistically than life in the teeming
cities of the East. More than likely, the perception
developed because in the West life was rawer, lacking
the veneer of society or the security of an established
legal system. Likewise, in regard to outlaws, there
were a few sociopathic killers, but they did not kill in
great numbers nor were they overrepresented in the
population. Most outlaws hid in remote areas and
struck isolated targets, generally leaving the common
man to his business.
This book is about the photographs. Some of the
mythology is perpetuated in the captions and some
new truths put forth as well. Viewing these photographs
allows us to look these fellows in the eye and assess
their character—something we probably wouldn’t have
been allowed to do in real life and live to tell about it.

From our earliest history, Americans have had an uneasy affection for our outlaws,
especially those from the romantic period of the Old West. Whether it is the
fearlessness and freedom they represent or some other psychological need, we
often overlook the misdeeds of these people in our fascination with them.
Historic Photos of Outlaws of the Old West includes nearly 200 black-and-white
photographs, with captions and introductions, depicting the most legendary outlaws
and many of the less infamous characters in the story of the American West.

Remembering
Old California
by Nancy Hendrickson

A forty-year resident of San Diego, Nancy
Hendrickson is the author of numerous magazine
articles and four books, and a member of the
Western Writers of America. She developed
an interest in California history at an early age.
Long fascinated by California’s Spanish, Russian,
Chinese, and English heritage, Hendrickson often
visits the state’s historic sites, while doing research
                            and photography for future articles.

The story of California began when a Portuguese captain sailing for Spain found a beautiful natural harbor
as he plied his way up the Pacific coast. Little could he have imagined that dropping his anchor in what
is now San Diego Bay would be the birth of the Golden State, with its rocky cliffs and rugged beaches in
the north, and orange trees, warm ocean breezes, and boulevards lined with palm trees in the postcard-
perfect south.
With a selection of fine historic images from her best-selling book, Historic Photos of Old California,
Nancy Hendrickson provides a valuable and revealing historical retrospective on the growth and development
of Old California. This volume, Remembering Old California, is the state’s story.
