    GRI Readers’ Choice Survey Report:
    Unique Research into Readers’ Preferences
A survey conducted in parallel to the GRI Readers’ Choice Awards will give better insight into
the identity and views of sustainability report users around the world. The resulting landmark
report will be the first ever global analysis of report reader’s preferences.

GRI commissioned the leading global sustainability reporting trend monitors KPMG and
SustainAbility to analyze, assess and present the survey results. These results will benefit
reporting organizations by revealing more about what their readers want, and are expected to
shed light on how sustainability reports could be made more usable and appropriate.

Nearly 2300 people in 70 countries completed the survey, resulting in the most comprehensive
data set ever compiled in this field. The highly anticipated report will be released during the
morning session on Thursday 8 May. KPMG and SustainAbility will be on hand to present their
key findings, along with top leaders from business, investment, NGOs, and other communities
who will provide their thoughts and interpretation on the results.

This research will change the practice of sustainability reporting as we know it today.
Key questions the survey addressed include:

       • Do the information needs of investors, media, civil society and employees differ
       • Do preferences and information needs vary across geographic regions?
       • Does the real or perceived quality of the report play a role in its usefulness to readers?
       • Do readers prefer data, management analysis, or a more strategic discussion in their
       • Is the concept of materiality foremost on readers’ minds? Are companies focusing on
          material issues?
       • How important is it to present a balanced view of performance - telling the good news
          and the not-so-good news?

All participants will receive a copy of the summary report and a USB stick with detailed results
for their own use and research.

The BBC World Debate: How accountable is business?

The World Debate asks whether companies, already forced to report on their finances,
should also have to reveal details of their impact on the environment and society? How
transparent do we expect companies to be and can we trust them to come clean? Can
openness and profitability go hand in hand?

Bringing together the viewpoints of stakeholders on sustainability reporting today during
the conference, the climax of the discussions will be a World Television Debate moderated
by the BBC’s Nik Gowing.

Join the academic conference sessions for interactive high level scholarly debates on sustainability and transparency which will
bring together prominent established scholars and younger researchers under four specific themes: Carbon Disclosure; Stakeholder
Engagement and Reporting Relevance; NGO Accountability; and GRI as an Institution.
In parallel, twelve poster presentations covering a range of issues related to sustainability, transparency and reporting will
be displayed in the Heian and Witte Leeuw rooms. Younger and senior scholars from a variety of countries will be on hand
to discuss their latest research.

Panel 1: Carbon disclosure (Thursday 8 May 11.00-12.30)
Jan Bebbington, University of St. Andrews (Chair) - Ans Kolk, University of Amsterdam -
Matthew Kiernan, Innovest - Craig McKenzie, University of Edinburgh - Carlos Larrinaga-Gonzalez, University of Burgos
Concern about climate change has brought carbon issues to the forefront of the corporate social responsibility and sustainability
reporting agenda. Presentations will discuss how an evolving legislative environment and taxation regimes are affecting
corporate disclosure and their relationship with voluntary disclosure standards. The divergent demands for carbon data from
different stakeholder constituencies, current reporting practices and requirements for the future will also be explored.

Panel 2: Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting Relevance (Thursday 8 May 14.00-15.30)
Ian Thomson, University of Strathclyde (Chair) - Jan Bebbington, University of St. Andrews -
David Owen, University of Nottingham - Colin Dey, University of Dundee - Georgios Georgakopoulos, University of Amsterdam
Effective stakeholder engagement is acknowledged as a critical element of sustainability reporting, yet arguably it is the least well
developed of reporting practices. Stakeholder engagement is a concept at the heart of The Global Reporting Initiative and this
session will cover a number of themes related to the development of effective stakeholder engagement.

Panel 3: NGO Accountability (Thursday 8 May 16.00-17.30)
Brendan O’Dwyer, University of Amsterdam (Chair) - Jeffrey Unerman, Royal Holloway, University of London -
Gloria Agyemang, Royal Holloway, University of London - Robert Lloyd, One World Trust -
Barb Wigley, Humanitarian Accountability Partnership (HAP) International
The increasing power and presence of NGOs has led to mounting interest in the area of NGO accountability. NGO responses to
this include the international NGO Charter launched in 2006 and the development of a Non-Profit Sector Supplement for the
G3 Guidelines. However some studies have identified that there is potential for inappropriate NGO accountability mechanisms
to damage, rather than enhance the social and environmental benefits. These findings suggest a challenging, complex
accountability agenda for NGOs which this session will debate.

Panel 4: GRI as an Institution (Friday 9 May 9.30-11.00)
Frank Biermann, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Chair) - Philip Pattberg, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - Rob van Tulder,
RSM Erasmus University - Halina Brown, Clark University, USA - Dror Etzion, IESE Business School, Spain
The Global Reporting Initiative has rapidly become the most widely used framework for sustainability reporting. Academics have
investigated the emergence of GRI as an institution, and the implications that it has had on companies’ reporting strategies,
and more generally. This session will reflect on these issues, and present evidence from studies on GRI from the perspective of
institutional entrepreneurship using inclusiveness and multi-stakeholder participation to affect social change.

     Welcome to Amsterdam
Amsterdam is known for its rich cultural heritage, diverse creative culture, commercial dynamism and high quality of life. Your stay
in Amsterdam is sure to be both an exciting and enriching experience.

The city’s official website will help you plan your trip before you leave and keep you updated during the
conference, ensuring you make the most of your visit to one of Europe’s most popular cities.

     Sustainable Amsterdam
The City of Amsterdam has produced a second sustainability report, this time for 2007, in which it accounts for the sustainability
of its activities: to local residents, businesses and to visitors of the city.

The broad range covered by sustainability – the balance between economic, environmental and human interests – is more
apparent in this new report. With the increasing interest in developments, and with more departments becoming involved in
sustainability, it has now been possible to produce a report with the theme ‘quality of life in the city’. The focus is on health and
the environment but education and work are also considered.

     The City of Amsterdam:
     sustainability as core business
The function of the City of Amsterdam, with its fourteen city boroughs and over thirty departments and businesses, is not just
to set an example. Sustainability is increasingly becoming a core business within the principal role of managing the city. Various
campaigns carried out in 2007 show that sustainability has become an increasingly important pillar of policy since 2005, shown
for example by the energetic campaigns to meet European air quality standards and to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and
by the investments made in good education because we regard children as the ‘city’s capital’. Operational transparency is just as
important, for example through the simplification of regulations and their enforcement, through digital service provision, and
through the close involvement of the citizens of Amsterdam in planning. The City of Amsterdam also stimulates companies with
which it does business through sustainable purchasing. International co-operation is also taking place to achieve sustainability
objectives. In addition, the city council wishes to create chances and opportunities for the people of Amsterdam. After all, the
more than 743,000 inhabitants of 177 nationalities make the city what it is.

     The Amsterdam feeling
Quality of life is measured not only based, for example, on air quality data, but also on the ‘Amsterdam feeling’, i.e. the extent
to which people in the city feel at home, feel that they belong to Amsterdam and are proud of the city. This feeling is concisely
expressed in the slogan ‘I Amsterdam’. It is about people and taking part, about people who live, work and relax in the city, and
about people who take care of their city. These people have been the sustainable force behind Amsterdam for generations. As
the choices we make now partially determine the quality of life for future generations, the City of Amsterdam also invests in that
feeling. The economic point of view is equally important, since a clean, healthy and concerned, respectful city attracts business.

There is much more to be done. Tackling problems sometimes takes much time, and the influence of the City Council on the
sustainable development of the city as a whole is limited. The 2007 sustainability report is therefore a new development and, we
hope, a renewed source of inspiration. Most of all, it is an invitation to everyone who feels involved in Amsterdam to contribute to
the quality of life in our city, now and in the future.

You can find the sustainability reports, only available in digital form, and the public versions of the reports on
