2-001 Safety Information

- It is the responsibility of the machine owner or their authorized representative to make certain that the machine
operators are correctly trained in the operation of the machine.
- Only authorized electricians or electrical specialists may work on the electrical equipment.
- The pneumatic and electric connecting lines are to be installed in an orderly manner and are to be protected from
damage (by cable channels, conduits, or something similar).
- The safety devices, which are included in this shipment, must always be utilized and shall not be by-passed or
           rendered inoperable.
- During service or maintenance work, the machine must be turned off at the main electrical switch (unplug the
machine) and the machine must be disconnected from the pneumatic lines (for example, by quick coupling).
- Before a tool change, gearbox change or work in the area of the drill, the main switch must always be set at 0.
- Use only tools which meet specifications and regulations and which are strong and durable (such as the tools from
           the Grass product line program).
-Only hard metals, or HSS (high speed steel) drills with a total length of 57 mm and a shaft diameter of 10 m may
           be utilized.
- The drill diameter may be a maximum of 35 mm on the drive spindle and a maximum of 15 mm diameter on all
           the other bore spindles.
- Before operating the machine, all safety devices must be checked to make sure they are complete and function
           correctly.
- The operator should be especially careful with larger workpieces that project out over the machine. We strongly
recommend using a larger support base or additional support bases for the workpiece.
- Shavings should not be blown off, but should be suctioned with the appropriate device.
- The machine should always be turned off at the main switch when work is finished and then secured, so that
           unauthorized persons cannot start it.
- Keep the workplace and the surrounding area clean because messiness and an unorganized workplace increase
           the risk of injury.
- Protect yourself from electrical shocks.
- Utilize the machine only in dry spaces and never leave the machine outside in the rain.
- Keep unauthorized persons away from the machine.
- Only one person shall operate the machine.
- When working, keep your hands away from the working area of the drill and the insertion die arm.
- Wear appropriate work clothing when operating the machine.
- Use a hair net with long hair and do not wear wide or floppy pieces of clothing which could
become caught in moving machine parts.

The machine’s specific settings during the measuring cycle:

Drillbit: 1 Hinge cup drill bit Ø 35 mm t = 13 mm n=2890U/min.
          2 Dowel drill bit Ø 8 mm t = 13 mm n=2940 U/min.
Work piece: uncoated particle board
Microphone’s position 0.5 m in front of the drill motor axle in 1.5 m height

Dust:

The determined dust rating accoring to DIN 33893 Part 2

Statistical protected maximum amount 0,48 mg/m3

Description of the interface exhaust connection piece:
Suction exhaust pipe Ø 80 mm
Minimum air speed 17,9 m/sec.
Static suction 480 Pa

Connection of the Suction System:

The Ecopress must be connected to a suction system according to the interface description.
Hook-up line are to be very inflammable
If an electric coupling is required for the suction system, the Grass company has a special accessory-a volume flow

4-005 Ecopress Machine’s Function

Ecopress-Pneumatic

By pressing the start button (position 1, illustration 4-004-01), the pneumatic valve (2) (illustration 4-006-01) is
activated and the pneumatic cylinder executes the upward motion of the boring head. The exhaust air of the cylinder
escapes through the pneumatic roller valve (3) (illustration 4-006-01) which is activated by the switch cam (12)
(illustration 4-002-03).
As soon as the switch cam releases the pneumatic roller valve, this valve closes. Now the exhaust air of this cylinder
has to escape through the one-way restrictor valve (6) (illustration 4-006-01).
Consequently, the exhaust air also flows through the one-way restrictor valve (4) (illustration 4-006-01) and activates
the P-E-transformer (5) (illustration 4-006-01), which turns on the power circuit protection K1 (illustration 4-007-01).
Thus, the motor operates.
After the escape of all the exhaust air from the cylinder, the air from the P-E transformer (5) (illustration 4-006-01) also
escapes through the one-way restrictor valve (4) (illustration 4-006-01), and the motor shuts off.
When the start button is released, the boring head returns to the uppermost position. The exhaust air of the upper
cylinder chamber is used to blow the wood shavings out of the bore hole.

Caution: The more the one-way restrictor valve is closed, the longer the motor will run after reaching the boring
depth; respectively, after the release of the start button.

Caution: The switch cam has to activate the pneumatic valve in the uppermost position. The switch cam has to be
installed high enough, so that the motor will not also run during the insertion.

Ecopress-Manual

All movements are manually operated on the Ecopress-Manual.
When the hand lever is pushed down, the boring head will also move down. The cam switch (1) (illustration 7-305-01)
is tightly connected to the boring head, which activates the roller limit switch (2) (illustration 7-305-01). As soon as the
roller limit switch is activated, the control system turns on the electric motor.

Caution: The cam switch must not activate the roller limit switch in the uppermost position. The cam switch must be
installed high enough so that the motor does not run during the insertion.

6-001 Pneumatic Connection (Only With Ecopress Pneumatic)

The Ecopress is equipped with a factory provided 2 m long airhose (6/3 diameter). A Euro quick coupling will be
installed, according to the country of destination.
For wiring diagram, see chapter 4-006, page 26.

Connection:
Caution:
If the machine is connected to pressure, the motor support with the gearbox can move up.

a.) Lift the adjusting knob of the maintenance unit and turn counterclockwise.
b.) Make the air pressure connection by means of a quick coupling or a shut off valve with an exhaust. It has to be
connected so that the machine operators can disconnect the machine from the air pressure ductwork
system at anytime within a distance of maximum 3 m.
c.) Turn the regulator clockwise until the pressure gauge of the maintenance unit indicates about 5.5 - 6 bar
(0.55-0.6 MPa ). Press the adjusting knob.
d.) Perform the function test with the main switch turned off and without the drill. By activating the start button, the
motor support has to move downward. When the button is released, the machine returns immediately to the
          starting position.
e.) Check the function of the pneumatic hold down device (accessory).

6-002 Electric Connection

The machine is equipped with a factory provided 2 m long 5-pole connecting cable. Depending on the country of
destination, a socket (CEE 5x 16 A) will be installed.
For the wiring diagram, see chapter 4-007, page 28.

Warning:
The electrical hook-up of the machine must be performed only by authorized technicians, according to the
regulations of the respective country. For any maintenance work on the electrical system of the Ecopress,
the machine must be disconnected from the power supply by means of a plug or a series connected

7-303 Adjusting the Boring Speed of the Ecopress-Pneumatic
of the Ecopress-Pneumatic Illustration 7-303-01

Tools needed: Allen wrench 3 mm

The Ecopress operates with a fixed feeding speed and a continously adjustable operating speed.
When starting the switch cam (illustration 7-304-01, position 1) on the pneumatic valve (illustration 7-304-01, position
2), the switchover from the feeding speed to the operating speed is completed.
The operating speed is adjusted by a pneumatic choke.
The operating speed is increased by turning the adjusting screw (A) counter clockwise.

The following is generally valid for the operating speed:
The harder the workpiece is, the slower the operating speed;
the less the tool cuts, the slower the operating speed.

7-304 Adjusting the Turn-On Timing for the Electric Motor
of the Ecopress-Pneumatic Illustration 7-304-01

Tools needed: Allen wrench 3 mm

As soon as the switch cam (1) releases the roller of the pneumatic valve, the change-over from feeding speed to ope-
rating speed is completed. At this time, the electric motor turns on. The switch cam, and therefore, the turn-on timing
of the motor can be adjusted by loosening the clamping screws.

Caution:
The switch cam (1) must activate the roller of the pneumatic valve while the motor support is in the upper position.
The switch cam (1) must be mounted far enough upward that the motor does not run during insertions.

                                                                                                                       43

7-306 Adjusting the Side Stops Illustration 7-306-01

Tools needed: Open end fork wrench 8/10
Loosen the screw (1) with the open end fork wrench by turning according to A.
Slide the stops to the desired dimensions. By placing a workpiece on a stop, the adjusted dimension can be better
controlled.
Tighten the screw (1) in direction B.

In order to avoid adjustment errors between left and right, we recommend utilizing a fence for the second side.
Fence and zero point holding device are available as accessories.

                                                                                                                             45

Tools needed: Open end fork wrench 8/10 mm
Center-zero point gauge is an accessory.
Stop adjustment gauge is an accessory.

- After adjusting the side stops on the right side, the adjustment of the left side is made (for example, for left and right
         door at the hinge mounting).
- Put pin A (illustration 7-307-01) in the bore hole B (illustration 7-307-01) of the center zero point gauge (accessory).
- Loosen the flap screw C (illustration 7-307-02). Slide the adjustment ring D (illustration 7-307-02) against the
stop latch E (illustration 7-307-02) of the side stops. Tighten the flap screw.
Caution: Flap screw must point upward.
Use more adjustment rings, if necessary.
- Press down all stop latches.
- Swing the adjustment gauge about 180∞ on the left side.
- Loosen a stop on the left side. Slide the stop toward the adjustment ring until the stop latch touches the
         adjustment ring.

If the same hole patterns are repeated, it is recommended to get a stop adjustment gauge for each hole pattern and
exchange the flap screws for set screws.
This allows for exact and precise dimensions on both sides by means of a stop adjustment gauge for desired hole
patterns.

                                                                                                                           47

Tools needed: Open end fork wrench 8/10 mm
5-Spindle gear box is an accessory
                 Index ruler is an accessory

The index ruler is used to set the distances between the individual side stops in 32 mm
distanced notches for the hole line borings.

- Set the first side stop on the desired dimension (64 mm + the desired beginning of the hole
line from the stop edge of the workpiece.
- Place the index ruler A with the edge A1 on the first side stop.
- Loosen the next side stop and slide it towards the edge A2 of the index ruler, then the next side
stop against the edge A3... then A4
- If there are more than 4 side stops necessary, the index ruler lies on the 4th stop with edge A1 and the
other 3 stops can be set.

In order to avoid adjustment errors, respectively adjustment precision, between left and right, we recommend setting
the stops on the second side with a stop adjustment gauge.

scale. In case both values are not identical:
- Loosen both screws (1) with a 5 mm Allen wrench and set the scale to the measured value. Tighten both screws.
- Complete another test drilling until both values match.

8-002 Boring Head’s Operating Speed Cannot Be Adjusted only with Ecopress-Pneumatic

If the operating speed cannot be adjusted (according to chapter 7-303), a technician or specialist must be consulted.
”Pneumatic Wiring Diagram”, chapter 4-006.

8-003 Motor Does Not Run

- Turn off the main switch. Check if the drill gearbox turns manually on a gearbox spindle. The ventilation wheel
must turn thereby. (If this is not the case, then the gearbox can sustain mechanical damages.)
- Turn on the main switch on the motor.
- Press the blue button on the cover of the electric switch box; the thermal overload relay has kicked in.
- Check to see if the machine is plugged in.
- The Ecopress-Manual: Does the switch cam activate the limit switch during the drilling cycle? Illustration 7-305-01.
- The Ecopress-Pneumatic: Does the switch cam release the roller of the pneumatic valve during the drilling cycle?
          Illustration 7-305-01.
- Check the fuses in the in-house electric distributing panel.
- If points are unsuccessful, then consult a specialist or technician. See wiring diagram in Chapter 4-007.

8-004 The Boring Head Does Not Descend only with the Ecopress-Pneumatic

- Turn off the main switch.
- Check the pneumatic lead cable.
- Check the air pressure in the machine with the pneumatic gauge; it should indicate 5.5 - 6 bar.
- Check if all the pneumatic lines inside the Ecopress are plugged in and if the pneumatic lines
         are damaged.
- Release the pneumatic connection (1) by pressing in the rings (2) (illustration 8-004-01) and
pulling out the pneumatic hose. When the start button is activated, compressed airshould be
expelled from the disconnected pneumatic line.
Caution: Keep hands clear of the danger zone of moving parts. If compressed air
is blowing out, then the problem lies with the pneumatic cyclinder.
If no compressed air blows out, then the problem probably lies with the start valve or
         perhaps with the pneumatic cylinder.
-If none of these points are successful, then a pneumatic specialist should be consulted. For wiring diagram,
         see chapter 4-006.

8-005 Parts Do Not Fit The Drill Patterns When Inserted illustration 8-005-01/02

Drill a hole pattern. Turn off the main switch. Mount one of the corresponding insertion dies and place on a part
which is to be inserted. Swing the insertion arm downward. Adjust the pressurized air on the pressure reducing
gauge to 2 bar. Try to insert the part.
a.) If the part is too far to the left or right:
Loosen the screw (1) (illustration 8-005-01) with a 4 mm Allen wrench. Move the die to the left or right.
          Tighten the screw again.
b.) If the part is too close to the fence:
Loosen the hexagon nut (1) (illustration 8-005-02) with an open end fork wrench 8/10 mm.
Unscrew the Allen head screw (2) in a counter clockwise direction. Then tightenthe hexagon nut again.
b.) If the part is too far away from the fence:
Loosen the hexagon nut (1) (illustration 8-005-02) with an open end fork wrench 8/10 mm.
Screw the Allen screw (2) in a clockwise direction. Tighten the hexagon nut again.

                                                                                                                      69

     9. Maintenance and Care
9-001 Maintenance Plan

Maintenance work should only be done after the main switch on the electric motor is on 0 (turned off) and the pneuma-
tic air ductwork system has been disconnected to the machine.

Daily:

Before beginning work: Check all safety devices to make sure they function properly and are complete.
After work is completed: The machine should be secured against unauthorized operation (with a padlock). Clean
wood shavings off the machine.

Weekly, or as necessary:

Drain the filter-pressure reducer by pushing the yellow plastic component on the filter-pressure
reducer upward. Then disconnect the machine from the pneumatic air ductwork system (semi-automatic drain).

Monthly:

Clean the guide bars and lubricate with commercial grease.
Check the drill distance scale by sample drilling. Correct, according to point 8-001.
Check to see if the side stops are operational. Clean, if necessary.
Check the position of the insertion dies. Correct, according to point 8-005.

Yearly:

The Ecopress has proved its durability in many fatigue tests. But in order to ensure many years of smooth and
problem-free operation for your Ecopress, we recommend having the machine serviced every 1 to 3 years by an
experienced Grass Customer Service Technician or by a trained Grass Distributor.

9-002 Maintenance and Care Information

The machine should only be cleaned after the main switch is turned off to 0 on the electric motor and the machine is
disconnected from the pneumatic air ductwork system.

The machine should be cleaned as needed. This includes vacuuming the wood shavings; cleaning with a soft dry
cloth; not using strong or caustic cleaners such as acetone, nitro diluted solutions, gasoline or other similar solutions.
