1. Telecom MEMS
  - Title: RF/Microwave & Optical MEMS - Opportunities and Challenges
  - Speaker: Dr. Mark da Silva, Manager, Field Applications Engineering
  - Abstract:
   MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) are creating a discontinuity in the evolution of
   telecommunication systems. MEMS are revolutionizing the industry by providing high
   performance and compact solutions for circuit switching and selective tuning. This
   workshop will provide a detailed introduction to the exploding fields of RF and optical
   applications of MEMS starting with a review of the state-of-the-art in devices and systems.
   It will then present design and manufacturing challenges facing the insertion of this nascent
   technology and illustrate solutions through the use of examples.


2. Bio Chip MEMS
  - Title: Simulation for Biotech Microfluidics
  - Speaker : Mr. John Harley, Senior Applications Engineer
  - Abstract:
   Microfluidics uses photolithography and related tools of IC fabrication to create
   microscopic fluid channels in which biochemistry can be performed. This miniaturization
   dramatically cuts the cost of chemical reagents required to perform many assays and
   increases the speed of the chemistry. Microfabrication also promises massively parallel
   implementations, allowing thousands of genes to be tested, for example, at one time. Major
   applications of this technology include medical diagnostics and high throughput drug
   screening. In this talk we will describe the latest in computer-aided-design tools for biotech
   microfluidics, and give examples of their use, including results from the MicroTAS 2000
   conference just completed in the Netherlands.


3. JumpStart
  - Title: JumpStartTM - A Low Risk, Low Cost, Entry into MEMS Design and Device
         Prototyping
  - Speaker: Mr. James Lindauer, Manager, Worldwide Channel Sales
  - Abstract:
   Developers new to MEMS, R&D researchers, start-up companies and universities interested
   in testing their concepts in silicon will find JumpStart an ideal solution for prototyping new
   concepts or products prior to making a full development investment. The JumpStart design-
   to-silicon package includes MEMS Designer, an easy-to-use software design tool from
   Microcosm Technologies, Inc., and a silicon prototyping service from Cronos, a JDS
   Uniphase Company that results in 15 1cm. X 1cm. unreleased die. The methodology for
   creating a MEMS design using MEMS Designer will be illustrated and a tool demo will
   show full drawing capabilities for creating and editing 2D mask layout, parameterized
   layout generators for automating layout of common MEMS devices and structures, solid
   model generation for design viewing and verification, and outputting a GDSII mask file for
   device fabrication. The Cronos MUMPSTM three-layer polysilicon surface micromachining
   fabrication process and CaMEL element library will be described with examples of typical
   MEMS devices that can be manufactured.



 Biographies
1. Dr.Mark G. da Silva
 Dr. da Silva is a Manager, Applications Engineering of Microcosm Technologies, Inc., the
 leading supplier of CAD systems and services dedicated to supporting MEMS enabled
 product design. From 1995-1997, Dr. da Silva was a post-doctoral research fellow and
 lecturer at the University of Maryland (Baltimore), where he was actively involved in
 understanding the thermo-mechanical behavior of polymer thin-films as well as teaching
 design methods and materials science to the senior engineering class. Dr. da Silva obtained his
 M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Eng. from The Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore)
 in 1992 and 1994 respectively. His doctoral research focused on both the experimental and
 numerical understanding of the dynamics of metallic alloys and composites. His current
 research interests include MEMS test structures, squeeze damping, macro modeling of MEMS
 devices & systems and microfluidics.


2. Jim Lindauer
 Mr. Lindauer is Manager of Worldwide Channel Sales for Microcosm Technologies and is
 responsible for sales and marketing of Microcosm’s front-end software solutions for MEMS
 design. He previously served as Director of Sales and Marketing for Tanner Research, Inc., a
 provider of IC and MEMS design tools, and earlier as Director of International Operations for
 EEsof, Inc. (now part of Agilent Technologies, Inc.), which develops and markets software
 design tools for RF and Wireless applications. Mr. Lindauer has held executive and sale
 management positions in both EDA (Electronic Design Automation) and RF/Microwave
 components companies and has more than 25 years experience in the combined electronics
 and software industries. He graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science
 degree in Electrical Engineering.


3. John C. Harley, Ph.D
 John received B.A., B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania,
 completing his Ph. D. studies in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics in 1993. His
 thesis research was on high-speed compressible gas dynamics in microscale structures. From
 1995 to 1997, John worked as the manager of research and development at J.W. Harley Inc,
 developing sensors and monitoring systems used in the electric power industry. From 1997 to
 1999 he worked at Fluent Inc, a leading supplier of computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
 software. He is currently a Senior Applications Engineer with Microcosm Technologies, Inc.,
 working primarily in biotech and microfluidic applications.

사의 주요 구성원 또한 Ph. D.급의 엔지니어들로써 MEMCAD의 개발은 물론
고객에 대한 전문적인 기술지원과 교육을 제공하고 있습니다. 현재 미국 뿐
만 아니라 일본과 유럽에서도 MEMCAD/FlumeCAD 활용이 증대되고 있으며,
주요 고객으로는 Denso, Analog Devices, Ford, Motorola, Perkin-Elmer, Texas
Instruments와 Xerox 등이 있습니다.
