                 AssociAte iN APPLied scieNce degree ProgrAM - A45100g
                 The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide
                 nursing care to clients and groups of clients throughout the lifespan in a variety of settings. Courses will include
                 content related to the nurse’s role as provider of nursing care, as manager of care, as member of the discipline of
                 nursing, and as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

                 Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) which
                 is required for practice as a Registered Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, long term care facilities,
                 clinics, physicians’ offices, industry, and community agencies. The Associate Degree Nursing program at Sandhills is
                 accredited by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
                 Admission Requirements: Associate Degree Nursing - Degree Program
                 For more information, contact the Admissions Office or your faculty advisor.
                 £ Admission Application — Apply online at or applications are available through
                   the Admissions Office -- Stone Hall Room 115A. Indicate A45100G as your major.
                 £ Transcripts (High School/GED and College) — Request an official copy of all of your transcript(s),
                   which must be received in a sealed envelope from the issuing school.
                 £ Placement Test — Complete the ACCUPLACER test, offered on a walk-in basis at the Learning Resource
                      Center (LRC) located in Boyd Library. A testing ticket (issued by Admissions), photo identification and a
                      $7.00 fee are required. Official ACCUPLACER, COMPASS, ASSET, SAT or ACT scores for tests taken within the
                      past five years may also be accepted. Contact the Testing Office for additional information.
                 £    Pre-Advisement — After testing, see a Pre-Advisor in Student Services to discuss your test scores and
                      receive your advisor assignment. You will also be given information about how to register for classes.
                      If you are unable to meet with a Pre-Advisor, a New Student Pre-Advising Packet will be mailed to you.
                      (Your test scores will not be mailed.)
                 £    Registration — Contact your advisor for an appointment to register for classes or participate in one of
                      our New Student Registration Days. (Dates and times are given with Pre-Advising information.)
 Admissions      £    Financial Aid — (Optional) If you have any questions about paying for your education, contact our
                      Financial Aid Office. To apply online for federal financial aid, go to
                 Stage I: Special Admission Requirements:
                 £ Pre-Requisite Classes – Algebra and Chemistry with a grade of “C” or better, verified by College or
                   High School transcript.
                 £ Test score/class requirements – Students must place into: ENG 111 and MAT 080 or higher.
Placement Test   £ Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test (HOBET) - Achieve a 70+ composite score for this test.
                      Students can only take this test twice in an academic year (Aug.-July). To schedule a test date, call
910-695-3733          695-3733. Cost of the test is $20, and a photo ID is required. HOBET/NET scores for tests taken within
                      the last 5 years are accepted. Study guides are available at the SCC library and the bookstore.
                 £    Documentation of Stage I–Once you have passing HOBET scores, Tricia Donadio, Admissions Nursing
                      Advisor, will verify receipt of all Stage I documentation. A letter will then be sent to you indicating you
                      may proceed with the Stage II worksheet, which allows you to enter the “qualified applicant pool.”
                      It is your responsibility to keep a current address and phone number on file with Tricia Donadio
                      (910-695-3727, 127-A Stone Hall, and to follow-up with her if you do not
                      receive a letter.

                 Stage II: Admission Summary Ranking:
                 All documentation submitted by students must be clear, complete and accurate in order to be eligible for the
                 Associate Degree Nursing program. Instructions for completing the required form(s) are available in the nursing

Financial Aid    £ Total Rank Score - Students will be ranked according to the Total Rank Score that is calculated
                      based on best HOBET/NET score plus points for specific academic performance either in high school or

                      scores will be offered admission for the Fall 2009 semester.
                      £ Students who graduated from high school or obtained a GED prior to December 2007 may accumulate points
                        based on HOBET test score + college record to date (based on co-requisites listed with * on other side) + classes
                        listed on the College Course Worksheet.
                      £ Students who graduated from high school from December 2007 through Spring 2009 may accumulate points
                        based on: HOBET test score + weighted high school GPA or the College Course Worksheet (whichever is more
                                                                                                  £ Early Consideration - Submit a completed Admission Stage II Summary sheet and a College Course Worksheet
                                                                                                       to the Nursing Department (Kennedy 124-A) and obtain a written receipt. Early Consideration documentation
                                                                                                       will be accepted starting January 20, 2009 and must be received by 4 pm on January 30, 2009.
                                                                                                  £    Late Consideration - Submit a new/updated Admission Stage II Summary sheet and a College Course
                                                                                                       Worksheet to the Nursing Department (Kennedy 124-A) and obtain a written receipt. Late Consideration
                                                                                                       documentation must be received by 4 pm on May 29, 2009. Further invitations for any remaining
                                                                                                       openings for the Fall 2009 class will be issued in rank order.
                                                                                                  £    Final Review of Rankings - In the event the number of available seats for Fall 2009 are unfilled,
                                                                                                       vacancies will be filled by students in rank order from the June 2009 list.
                                                                                                  Stage III: Students selected in Stage II to enter the Fall 2009 class must:
                                                                                                  £ Remain in good academic standing with the college (may not be on academic probation).
                                                                                                  £ Complete and submit all medical forms required of Sandhills students enrolling in Nursing.
                                                                                                  £ Obtain and submit documentation of current American Heart Association – Health Care Provider CPR
                                                                                                    certification prior to beginning nursing classes.
                                                                                                  £ Nurse Aide requirement: Documentation of one of the following must be received prior to attending
                                                                                                       nursing classes. If you have questions about this class or requirement, contact Dottie Bement at
                                                                                                       695-3965, Kennedy Hall - Room 010.
                                                                                                       £ Certificate of Completion from a state approved NA I training program having theory, lab and clinical components
                                                                                                         completed after June 1, 2007.
                                                                                                       £ Certificate of Completion of a North Carolina Community College EMT transition to NAS program
                                                                                                         completed after June 1, 2007.
                                                                                                       £ Certificate of Completion from a state approved NA I training program having theory, lab and clinical
                                                                                                         components completed before June 1, 2007 and current listing on North Carolina NA I registry.
                                                                                                  £ Attend a nursing department orientation (date will be announced by the department).
                                                                                                  £ Receive a Final Placement Letter – Students who complete Stage I, II and III will be notified by mail

                                                                                                      take as many co-requisite courses as possible prior to beginning the nursing courses, due to the hours

                                                                                                      required for study, clinical rotations and labs.
                                                                                                  £ Students are responsible for extra costs for uniforms, supplies medical exam, insurance and travel to
                                                                                                      clinical sites. Initial costs could exceed $800.
                                                                                                  £ Students with a criminal conviction or NC Nurse Aide I Registry listing with substantiated findings of
                                                                                                      abuse, neglect, or misappropriation might not be eligible for licensure which is required for employment.
                                                                                                      In NC, each situation is evaluated individually by the NC Board of Nursing.
