                               Proton 8000™ Magnetic Media Degausser/Eraser

                                           Set up & Instructions

This unit has been thoroughly inspected and tested prior to shipment.

You have just purchased the Proton 8000™ Computer media and audio visual tape/disc
degausser/eraser. This unit is capable of erasing the computer media, video tapes, audio, and
     tapes including metal particle.

The Proton 8000™ contains a capacitive, ferroresonant magnetic core designed for extended
operating time, (On-OFF), and less power consumption compared to competitive models.

After receiving your unit, inspect it for shipping damage or loose and/or broken parts that might
have been damaged during shipping. PLEASE NOTE: The two blank screw holes are for
mounting the tape reel guide attached to the top pane with two 10-32 mounting thumb screws
     provided.

After the inspection is done, place the 8000 in a location where it will have a minimum clearance
of 3" at the back (See Figure 1), and no objects obstructing the airflow at the front or back of the
     unit.

When the location has been determined, the unit can be plugged in to an outlet capable of
handling 17 Amps at 115/125 Volts A/C. The 8000 employs “soft start” technology to prevent
electrical “circuit breaker” cycling during degauss operations.

After the power switch is turned on, the main power switch light will be on. At this time, the 8000 is
ready to degauss any magnetic media.

The Proton 8000™ Degausser includes a remote foot switch. It will automatically stop the
degausser from working as soon as the operator removes his foot from the foot switch. The power
switch will remain on and cooling will continue to operate as normal. When the operator needs to
degauss again, just press the foot switch and operate under normal conditions. Upon completion
of the degaussing operation, the power switch can then be turned off.

                                        OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

The Proton 8000™ Degausser/Bulk Eraser is equipped with an automatically reset thermo-protector
(resets and unit is allowed to cool), to protect the magnetic core from overheating. It is suggested the unit
be used in cycles no longer than 20 minutes continuous and allowed to cool for approximately 20 minutes.

                                                     CAUTION:

§ Connect to power source as indicated on the back panel of Degausser/Eraser.
§ Before starting the erasing operation, the computer disk, tape or film being erased should be on a non
magnetic reel, hub or cassette. (plastic, aluminum, brass, etc.)
§ Do not operate the degausser within four feet of magnetic media that is not to be erased.
§ Do not wear a wristwatch, rings, or other jewelry while operating the Degausser.
§ Do not allow pacemakers, hearing aids, compasses, cell phones, or other sensitive electronic devices
within 6 (six) feet of the unit.
§ ANY DRIVE, CARTRIDGE OR REEL WITH METALLIC PARTS WILL BECOME HOT DURING THE
DEGAUSS CYCLE. WEAR A GLOVE ON THE HAND HOLDING REELS OR DRIVES WHILE
DEGAUSSING TO PREVENT BURNS. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HANDLE DEGAUSSED ITEMS WITH
YOUR BARE HAND! SERIOUS BURNS CAN OCCUR. WAIT UNTIL DEGAUSSED ITEM COOLS
         BEFORE HANDLING.

To Degauss (erase) Computer Magnetic Media, Tapes, Disks, Cartridges, A/V Tape and Film:

Turn main power switch on. Note audible indication (hum), when foot switch is pressed. Also note that front

panel amp meter is in the green “FULL DEGAUSS CURRENT” range. (This will vary slightly, depending on

power line conditions). The main power switch light and the amber fan light on the front panel are on before

     proceeding with the degaussing/erasing operation.

     TAPE REELS:

Place the reel to be erased flat on the top panel with the reel guide attached to the top pane with two 10-32

mounting thumb screws provided. Slowly rotate the reel around the inside of the reel guide as shown on

panel, rotating the reel several times (See Figure 2). If the tape width exceeds one-half (½) inch width, turn

reel over and repeat as above, with each side for about 10 seconds.

     COMPUTER DATA CARTRIDGES:

Remove tape reel guide. Move the cartridge in a left to right motion over the shaded area as shown (See

Figure 2). If the cartridge exceeds ½" thick, turn over and repeat as above. Best results will occur by

passing the magnetic media through the magnetic field with a slow but constant speed for five (5) seconds.

Five seconds per side time is required for full degauss (erasure) levels.

     HARD DRIVES:

Place hard drive in the plastic tray provided. Wear a glove to prevent burns and keep gloved hand on the

hard drive while degaussing to keep drive from “jumping” out of the tray. Degauss once (1 Pass), ROTATE

according to diagram (see Figure 2) and degauss again. Turn the drive over in the tray and repeat. Hard

drives require a maximum degauss time of 5-10 seconds per side. Make sure every side of the hard

drive is rotated and degaussed otherwise data may be left on the drive.
