Research    His long term intellectual and pragmatic work lies in the realization of the Islamic
Interests   Worldview in the arts, sciences and technologies, and involvement in community-based
            intellectual and socioeconomic self-empowerment, intercultural dialogue and the
            reharmonization of man and his natural environment.


            Specifically, his research interests are in the history and philosophy of Islamic and Western
            Science, and conceptual and pragmatic issues pertaining to the Islamization of the
            sciences, and the revivification of Islamic Science and Technology as a systemic empirical
            research program in the contemporary world.


            Current research focus: kalam physical theories; symbiosis between science and fiqh,
            Islamic Science as a long term scientific research program.

2. Since 2000 he has published research articles in al-Hikmah (ISTAC), al-Shajarah (ISTAC), Islamia (Indonesia),
Islam & Science (Canada), Kesturi (Malaysia), MathsDigest (INSPEM/UPM), as well as popular articles in Brunei
Times (Brunei), Education Quarterly (Malaysia), Reach (IIUM) and al-Naba (Singapore), Jawhar: Journal of Book
Review (Malaysia), Dian (Malaysia), Fitrah Magazine (Malaysia), and New Straits Times (Malaysia).

3. The Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM, 2004) published the Malay version of the Rihlah of
Ibn Battutah which he has co-translated from the original Arabic with Syed Nur Aqla Syed Abdullah (UPM). The
second edition of the book incorporates a 14 page Muqaddimah outlining the philosophical and historical
significance of the Rihlah for reviving the Islamic philosophy of travel in the contemporary age.


4. Invited member (since July 1 2005) of the Science and Technology Education Committee of the Academy of
Science Malaysia (ASM) entrusted with formulating creative environmental education programs for university
students (CEEPUS) with a view toward enhancing their sensitive and positive involvement with their immediate
socio-natural environment, through, among others, the creation of varsity nature/eco-educational parks,
varsity students‘ involvement in the creation of urban community nature parks in collaboration with the
relevant extra-varsity stake-holders, integrative and proactive recycling initiatives, and impartation of relevant
hands-on skills relevant to their post-varsity professional life, especially with regard to any work or project
requiring personal experienced input for responsible social and environmental impact assessments (SIAs and
EIAs). CEEPUS is still at the initial conceptual stage and so the funding and operational mechanisms have yet to
be worked out in detail.


5. Member of the Religion and Science Research Unit (RSRU) under the auspices of the Research Center, IIUM.


6. Member of the Special Committee for Preparing Friday Sermon Texts on Science & Technology (chaired by
the Minister), National Science Center, Ministry of Science & Technology, in conjunction with the Islamic
Science Exhibition in January 2007.


7. Member of the Organizing Committee for the Workshop on Islamization of Science, Islamic Academy of
Science Malaysia, held in February 9—10, 2007.


8. Recently (April 2009) appointed General Consultant, and Country Representative for Malaysia for The
Integrated Encyclopedia of the Qur‘an (IEQ) project, which is based in Canada and Pakistan.

9. Undertaken formal and informal consultancy work for individuals and institutes on issues pertaining to
Islamic Science and Islamization of Science.


10. He loves outdoor activities in the wilderness like canoeing, mountain hiking (to see ―silver clouds below‖),
cross-country trekking and camping out in the hills and forests by rivers and streams, ―seeking grace in every
step he takes,‖ and ―coming home to places he has never been before,‖ that he may, together with his beloved
wife, Zaiza, and children, Afifah, Irfan, Fawzan and Asna, ―praise with elation, praise every morning, God‘s
recreation of the new world,‖ InshaAllah, that his reality in practice finds accord with the vision in the intellect,
Amin, Ya Rabbal-‗Alamin bi haqqi khayri khalqika sallaLlahu ‗alayhi wa sallam wa ‗ala alihi wa sahbih ajma‗in.
