							Starting restaurant

Running your own restaurant can be a challenging, fun, and exciting business. Most food
lovers will confess that their dream job is to run their own restaurant serving their
favorite cuisines and dishes. The restaurant business is not only glamorous but also very
rewarding, both creatively and financially.

However, before you decide to take the leap, you need to know a few things about the
restaurant business.

1. Capital
The restaurant business is very capital intensive. You of course need to purchase or rent
commercial space to run a restaurant. Next, you'll need to hire a good interior designer.
The kind of cuisine you'll serve will be an important factor in deciding the overall 'look'
and 'mood' of your restaurant. A good interior designer will cost you quite a bit.
Furnishing the restaurant kitchen with all the appliances will also be quite expensive. All
this can add up to several hundred thousand dollars.

Restaurants are hardly ever profitable right from the start. It can take a few years before a
restaurant turns a profit. So you will also need capital to last this period (augmented, of
course, by your earnings from the restaurant itself). All this makes this business
particularly capital intensive.

2. Staff
A restaurant is only as good as its chef. Find the right chef and you have already half
ensured the success of your restaurant. A good chef will not only help decide your menu,
but will also be helpful in finding and hiring other staff. Many restaurant owners ignore
the serving staff, only to their own peril. The waiters or servers are as imporant as the
cooking staff, so hold intensive interviews and get the best staff you can.

3. Customers
The kind of customers your restaurant will get will depend a lot on your location, menu,
cuisine, particular dishes, the 'feel' of the restaurant, and the prices on the menu. A quirky
menu in a younger part of town will likely attract a younger customer base. A more
upscale 'feel' with a classic menu will attract a more affluent, more demanding customer
base. Every decision in your business should be based around the customers - what kind
of food would they like, what kind of chairs, tables, interior decorations would they
prefer, what kind of individual dishes can become local hits. These are all important
dishes that will decide the success of your business.
