Liquid Oxygen Liquid oxygen is found all around us in the air we breath. There is a very high volume of it yet many people have never even heard about it. The amount of liquid oxygen in the air you breath will vary by location. It is generally about 21% but some areas are as high as 50% . This number doesn’t seem to have any health benefits or adverse effects though. When it is contained in a vial to study you will notice it has a very pale blue color to it. This form of oxygen is also extremely cold. There have been problems in our society in the past though of people inhaling liquid oxygen. This isn’t a practice that you should be engaging in. While there are forms of oxygen therapy you shouldn’t be administering the stuff on your own. There are many health problems that can result from such uses of liquid oxygen. Most of them are temporary. They can last longer if you are taking high concentrations of liquid oxygen. They include dizziness, the inability to control body movements, confusion, tingling in the extremities, and even passing out. Some people have damaged their tissue and nerve endings from exposure to a large amount of liquid oxygen. Liquid oxygen is often given to infants that are born premature. This is a common practice but one that needs to be carefully regulated. The infant can suffer from those types of health problems. They can also have permanent damage to their eyes if they get too much liquid oxygen administered. A person needs to handle liquid oxygen very carefully. The extreme cold from it can result in burns on the body. Special clothing and gloves should be used when handling it as a safety precaution. Care also has to be taken to store it properly. There needs to be plenty of ventilation. There are special containers for it that will prevent the pressure in them from building up. There are some really good uses in the medical field for liquid oxygen. Yet there are plenty of risks involved in it as well. Knowing how to use it as well as to protect yourself is very important. Liquid oxygen in its own form in the air won’t harm you though.
