LITHUANIA COMMEMORATES THE BATTLE OF GRUNWALD
The Battle of Grunwald was the last great battle of
involving knights in Medieval Europe. It took place on
July 14, 1410. The Teutonic Knights, supplemented by
numerous mercenaries, were decisively defeated by the
combined forces of Poland and Lithuania. It signaled the
beginning of a permanent decline of the Teutonic Knights
and the ascendency of Poland and Lithuania. To
commemorate the 600th Anniversary of the important battle Lithuania issued a circulating

     HISTORIC OLD SILVER COINS
ANCIENT SILVER COIN OF PERSIS
This small silver 1/2 Drachm of Darev (Darius) II, dates from the first
century BC. His kingdom was centered in what is now southern Iran.
The coin pictures the king wearing a Parthian tiara, because of his
claim to Parthian territory. The reverse shows the king standing
before a Zoroastrian fire-altar.

SILVER DRACHM OF THE MAITRAKAS OF VALABHI
This medieval silver Drachm is the only coin issued by the Maitrakas of
Valabhi. Senepati Bhatarka, a General in the Gupta army, took advantage of
the weakening Gupta Empire. In 470 AD he set up an independent kingdom
in Saurashtra, located on the Arabian Sea in western India. His capital city of
Valabhi (now Vala) became a major center for both religious and secular studies. Though
Maitrakas dynasty ruled for nearly 300 years, their coins remained unchanged. The coins,
modeled after the Gupta Drachm, have a crude bust of Senepati Bhatarka on the front and a
legend and a trident on the reverse. The crudely made coins are about 10mm in diameter and are
often struck partially off-center. It is a remarkably affordable medieval silver coin.

LARGE SILVER COIN USED IN VIKING TRADE
These huge (42-44mm), thin, silver multiple Dirhams were
struck by Nuh II who ruled the Samanids of Transoxiana
from 976 to 997AD. His kingdom covered much of Persia
and Afghanistan, including the famed "silk road" cities of
Samarkand and Bukhara. These large silver coins were
struck primarily at his Afghan silver mines. They were used
in trade with the Vikings, who came down through the river
system of Russia. Because of the difficulty in striking such
a large coin by hand, the coins are weakly struck with parts
of the legends missing. Like most Islamic coins, their
design consists entirely of calligraphy. These are arguably
the world‟s first silver crowns, pre-dating those of Europe
by almost 600 years, and are a reminder of long-gone
nations that flourished a thousand years ago.

COIN OF THE BLACK DEATH - THE GENOESE COLONY IN KAFFA, CRIMEA
Traders from Genoa purchased the town of Kaffa in the Crimea (now
Feodosiya, Ukraine) from the Golden Horde in the late 13th century. It
quickly became a flourishing trading center that virtually monopolized
trade in the Black Sea area and housed one of Europe‟s largest slave
markets. It became infamous for bringing the Black Death to Europe. In
1347, Tartar forces besieging the city began to die off. The Genoese hoped this would end the
siege, however the enemy catapulted plague infested corpses into the city, spreading the plague.
Many believe that fleeing inhabitants of Kaffa carried the disease with them to Italy. This small,
very crude, silver Asper of the Genoese trading colony of Kaffa features the castle of Genoa on
one side and an Arabic legend with a Jujid tamga symbol on the other. The coin is from the reign
of Duke Filippo Maria Visconti, who ruled Genoa from 1421 to 1435. Until a recent hoard
turned up, the coin was very scarce and regularly sold for over $100. We purchased part of the
hoard, so can offer this scarce, historic coin for much less.

SILVER COIN OF SULEYMAN THE MAGNIFICENT
Suleyman the Magnificent ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1520 to 1566. A
powerful monarch, he expanded his empire and nearly conquered much of Europe.
Though Suleyman may have been magnificent, his coins tended to be small and
crude. This silver Maydin of Suleyman is dated AH926 (AD1520) which

OLD RUSSIAN WIRE MONEY OF MICHAEL ROMANOV
After a period of almost 20 years of chaos and civil war, the 16 year old Michael
Fydorovich Romanov was selected to be Czar of Russia in 1613. Though many
expected him to fail, young Michael slowly established his control over Russia and
wisely avoided involvement in the wars of Europe. By the time of his death in
1645 he had established the powerful Romanov dynasty, which was to last over 300 years, until
the Russian Revolution in 1917. Michael‟s coinage consisted primarily of tiny silver coins called
wire money. For hundreds of years most of Russia‟s commerce was based on these tiny silver
coins. The coins were made by taking a piece of silver wire, cutting it to the proper weight, then
smashing it between a pair of dies. As might be expected, the coins are rather crude and often off-
center. The coin shows a St. George on horseback on one side and legends on the other.

OLD CAMBODIAN SILVER
This silver Fuang (1/8 Tical) was issued by the Kingdom of Cambodia about
1847. The mythical Hamsa bird is pictured on this unusual, undated, uniface
coin. The hand-struck coin comes from a period when both Vietnam and
Thailand tried to control Cambodia through members of its royal family. It is
probably the least expensive South-East Asian silver coin of that era.

only, in 1949. It was one of the first silver
coins struck by Israel after gaining
independence. It has the same design as
the copper-nickel 250 Pruta, however it
has an “H” mintmark. Only 44,125 silver
coins were minted. The coin features 3
ears of grain, a design derived from an
ancient Judean coin of the First Revolt
against Rome. The Uncirculated coin is 32.2 mm in diameter and is struck in .500 fine silver.

AH1370 (AD1950). It was struck to the specifications of the old
Indian Rupee which had ceased production in 1939, but was still the
standard coin of Saudi Arabia. It contains 11.6 grams of .917 fine
silver. The coin was minted in the United States in order to pay for
Saudi oil. In keeping with Islamic tradition, the design avoids
showing any human figures. Instead the design features crossed
swords, a pair of palm trees and a design primarily made up of
calligraphy. It is an attractive old coin that is quite reasonably priced

These rarely seen, early, copper 1 Pana coins are the
first coins of Nepal. They bear the legend “Sri

issued by king Manadeva I between 464 to 497AD.
More recent research places them in the reign of king

FIRST COINS OF BHUTAN - THE SILVER AND COPPER DEB RUPEES
The tiny Himalayan kingdom

“Dragon Kingdom”. It was
established as a priestly
monarchy in 1652. For many
years it used coins from
nearby the nearby Indian state
of Cooch Behar. It started to strike its own coins about 1790, after the British East India
Company closed the Cooch Behar mint. The undated coins, denominated as Deb (1/2) Rupees,
were originally good silver; however by about 1840 the coins became heavily alloyed with
copper. The copper Deb Rupees continued to be struck until about 1910. The Deb Rupee was the
only denomination struck by Bhutan until the 20th century. Though the basic design remained
unchanged, there are numerous varieties, making a fascinating collecting area.

the first 43 years of his life by his cousins, who preceded him to the
throne. He was a pious and gracious Sultan, that suffered major defeats in wars with Russia,

COPPER COIN OF THE SHOGUNS OF JAPAN
This undated copper 1 Mon coin of Japan was minted in the mid 18th
century, a time when the power of the Shoguns was at its peak. It is in
the traditional "cash coin" style featuring a round coin with a square
center hole. The round is said to represent Heaven, while the square
represents the Earth, thus the coin is a perfect combination of Heaven and
Earth. A more realistic explanation is that because the coin was cast, the
square center hole made it easier to file off the casting flans

This scarce and unusual zinc 1 Cash coin of Annam was issued by the
Nguyen Lord Phuc Khoat who ruled the southern portion of Annam (now
Vietnam) from 1738 to 1765. Due to the monarch‟s extravagant lifestyle, a
lack of mines, and changes in trade patterns, there was a shortage of copper
needed to make coins. In 1746, at the suggestion of a Chinese contractor,
zinc was purchased from Dutch merchants and coins were privately minted
with official sanction. These coins were the title Thien Minh Thong Bao rather the than title of
the emperor. Soon over a hundred private mints were issuing the coins, which solved the coin
shortage but lead to severe inflation that sparked a major rebellion.

COINS OF WESTEROS
The Westeros coins are based on the SONG OF ICE AND FIRE
books by George R.R.Martin. It is a rich and varied fantasy tale
that has inspired role-playing games. Westros is a large land-
mass where numerous factions are vying for power. At times it
is unified under a strong ruler and at others it is fractionated
into warring kingdoms. The plots so are complicated that
even the author has been unable to figure out how to
complete his series. The following coins are based on the
books: The Copper Penny was minted by Torrhen Stark, the
last King of the Independent North Kingdom, before Aegon's
Conquest that united Westeros. The obverse pictures the
standing king with scepters. The reverse shows the
head of a Dire Wolf, mascot of the House of Stark. It
has a mintage of just 250 pieces. The Silver Stag of
Aegon was minted at Dragonstone during the reign of
King Aegon Targayen. He was the first king of all
Westeros. The obverse of the coin pictures the King
and his two wives, who were also his sisters. The
reverse pictures a Scythian stag. The 20mm Brilliant
Uncirculated silver coin has a mintage of just 200 pieces
The Copper Star of King Robert Baratheon pictures the king
on one side and a seven-pointed star. It has a mintage of
460 pieces. The Silver Brothel Token was issued by "The
Peach" of Stoney Sept, Westeros. The coin has an image of
a peach on obverse and the value "ONE" on reverse. The
client would purchase the token from the proprietor upon entering, and tender it to the courtesan
of their choice. The 20mm token is struck in 90% silver and has a mintage of just 100 pieces.

SILVER COINS OF THE ANAN ISLANDS
Anan Munhan Ylha (Isle of the Morning Sun), Anan Ylhatuoli (Isle of

SCARCE WWI NOTE FROM GERMAN BOHEMIA
With the collapse of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire at the end
of World War I, Czechoslovakia declared itself independent
on October 28, 1918. The ethnic German majority living in
the Sudentenland, wanting to maintain their ties to Germany
rather than be part of Czechoslovakia, set up an independent
German Bohemia, with Reichenberg (now Liberc, Czech
Republic) as the Capital. The Czech army soon reincorporated
the area into Czechoslovakia. In 1938 Hitler annexed the area
into Germany, which helped spark World War II. Following the war, the area was returned to
Czechoslovakia, who forcibly removed most of the Germans. This 10 Kornen note issued by the
City of Reichenberg is dated October 30, 1918, which is during the brief period of independence.
The note was good until February 15, 1919. The city‟s arms are on the reverse of the 125mm x
80mm ( 5” x 3.1”) note.
