Bright future awaits engineering and technology students
As if things couldn’t get any worse than we thought, in late June, Bank of England governor, Mervyn
King announced the economy was slowing and could be for some time. With household bills sent
soaring and inflation at an all time high, up by 3% in May, a rise from April, who can predict when this
will cease? A recent survey found companies remained confident about the next three months, but we
look further into how this will hit the graduate engineering market.

Summer internships - setting the seeds
The long stretch of the summer lies ahead. What do you have planned? For those ambitious, driven
graduates, a ten-week internship is the perfect way to find out which direction to take your career.
Most of the Times Top 100 graduate recruiters run internship programmes and they are proving to be
more popular than ever, with graduates queuing up to gain experience, improve their ‘soft skills’ and,
in some cases, be in with the chance of being offered a position upon graduation. Andrew Farrington,
gives the low down on his own summer internship experience at Mercer in 2007. His hard work finally
paid off after he was offered a job at Mercer. Andrew starts as an Actuarial Trainee in September
2008. http://www.insidecareers.co.uk/__8025732800339f1f.nsf/id/NLII-
