Self-Anchoring and in-group favoritism: An individual profiles analysis Otten, S., & Wentura, D. (2001). Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 37, 525-532. Ingroup bias and it’s explanations • SIT (Tajfel & Turner, 1986): The need for positive social identity leads to favorable comparison between ingroup and outgroup. • Self-anchoring (Cadinu & Rothbart, 1996): The self functions as a cognitive heuristic. As the self tends to be positive, self- anchoring leads to a positive ingroup. Cadinu & Rothbart, 1996 • Self-ingroup distances are smaller than self-outgroup distances • Compared to the outgroup, the ingroup was rated higher on favorable traits but lower on unfavorable traits. • The authors concluded that self-anchoring is the basis for ingroup bias. Otten & Wentura, 2001 • Comparing the strength of the valence effect to the strength of the self effect on group evaluations. friendly freundlich Trait ratings passive sociable passiv gesellig creative kreativ unfair ungerecht self confident selbstbewusst cold kalt hectic hektisch open minded aufgeschlossen intolerant intolerant reliable zuverlässig cowardly feige happy glücklich boring langweilig tatkräftig/energisch/v energetic oller Energie unfriendly unfreundlich empathetic einfühlsam sad traurig strong stark pessimistic pessimistisch Individual regression analysis 7 ingroup 6 outgroup Group evalution 5 4 3 2 1 0 0 - negative 1 - positive adjectives adjectives Ingroup bias is the better prediction of ingroup ratings from trait valence compared to the prediction of outgroup ratings from trait valence.
