 Ingroup bias and it’s explanations
• SIT (Tajfel & Turner, 1986): The need for
positive social identity leads to favorable
  comparison between ingroup and
  outgroup.
• Self-anchoring (Cadinu & Rothbart, 1996):
The self functions as a cognitive heuristic.
As the self tends to be positive, self-
anchoring leads to a positive ingroup.
     Cadinu & Rothbart, 1996
• Self-ingroup distances are smaller than
  self-outgroup distances
• Compared to the outgroup, the ingroup
was rated higher on favorable traits but
  lower on unfavorable traits.
• The authors concluded that self-anchoring
is the basis for ingroup bias.
       Otten & Wentura, 2001
• Comparing the strength of the valence
effect to the strength of the self effect on
  group evaluations.

Ingroup bias is the better prediction of ingroup ratings from trait valence
compared to the prediction of outgroup ratings from trait valence.

Self-anchoring is the prediction of ingroup ratings from self ratings.

• Simultaneous regression of ingroup
ratings on self ratings and trait valence:
  – M (β)valence = .08
  – M (β)self-rating = .33
  – M (β)self-ratingxvalence = .23
